  • Objectives: Obesity is one of risk factors for psychological and social adjustment problems (depression, low self esteem, low school function etc). Quality of life(QOL) is comprehensive and multidimensional construct including physical, emotional, social and school functioning. Some authors reported that child and adolescent obesity is associated with impaired QOL. This study was to examine the association between QOL and body mass index (BMI) in middle school students. Methods : Cross sectional analysis of 471 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 14 years ($mean{\pm}SD,\;13.4{\pm}0.6$), who attended one of middle schools in Seoul, Korea. Participants' QOL were scored by using Korean version of pediatric QOL inventory generic score scale ($PedsQL^{TM}$ 4.0). Participants had a $mean{\pm}SD\;BMI\;of\;21.3{\pm}4.0$. Self reports and parent proxy reports using $PedsQL^{TM}$ 4.0 were administered to measure participant's QOL. Participants were divided into four groups by BMI (Male: obesity group >26.5, at risk group 23.2-26.5, normal weight group 15.8-23.1, underweight group <15.8, Female : obesity group >25.2, at risk group 22.9-25.2, normal weight group 16.0-22.8, underweight group <16.0). Results : Compared with other groups, obese adolescents reported significantly(p<0.01) love. QOL in all domains. Obese adolescents were more likely to have impaired QOL than normal weight adolescents (Odds Ratio, 8.3, 95% confidence interval, 4.0-16.7). Conclusion : Obese adolescents have lower QOL than normal weight adolescents. Psychiatrist, parents, and teachers need to be informed of the risk fur impaired QOL in obese adolescents to target interventions that could enhance health outcomes.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the peer group factor related to adolescent smoking in the social structure(network) of adolescent groups, by applying the theory of social network. Methods: The data was collected from boy students of one high school located in Gun-Po city of Kyonggi Province. The total number of the sample was 605(223 first grade, 198 second grade, 184 third grade). The survey using the questionnaire was carried out in April 2005. Social position is finally classified as clique member, liaison, isolate group by using the NetMiner II 2.5 version. Results: The current smoking rate was 15.0%, and the life-time smoking rate was 34.9%. The smoking rate increased significantly, as the grade went up. And it was significantly high among the group having smoking friends. The logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio of the smoking friends group was about 4 times higher than the no smoking friends group in experience of smoking. But the smoking rate was higher significantly in the isolate group within the network composed of 2. person's social-link. The odds ratio of the isolate group was about 4.5 times higher than the clique member. However, this pattern was not found in the network composed of 3 person's social-link. Therefore, the hypothesis that clique member would have a correlation with smoking was rejected. In reality, the isolate group had a tendency of smoking more frequently. Conclusions: The result of this study suggests that the role of the peer group in smoking is to be considered in the prevention program. More attentions should be paid for the isolate group.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences between low-income and middle-income groups with respect to how family factors intervene with friendship factors to influence adolescent depression. In order to do this, we selected 1,552 adolescents (246 from low-income group and 1276 from middle-income group) from 1 panel of the 6th Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey and conducted multiple-group analysis for structural equation modeling. The results are as follows. Firstly, there were no direct effects of parenting style on adolescent depression for the low-income group, whereas effects were found to be significant for the middle-income group. Secondly, parenting style had a greater influence on friendship factors for the low-income group than the middle-income group. Thirdly, the influence of friendship factors on depression was much more negative for the middle-income group than the low-income group. Fourthly, it was found that parenting style had greater intervention effects on friendship factors influencing adolescent depression for the middle-income group as compared to the low-income group. However, intervention effects were not found for peer alienation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of adolescent's scoliosis on the stress level and study-attitude, to inform the public that there exist an important correlation between adolescent's scoliosis and stress, as well as, study-attitude, using a questionnaire. Methods: For this study, questionnaires were distributed to elementary school in G city from May 10 through May 31, 2011. This study measured a primary scoliosis-test by a scoliometer with 300 elementary school students and a secondary test by Cobb's angle using an X-ray. The subjects were divided into 2 groups (normal group (n=20), scoliosis group (n=20)). The collected data were analyzed by a t-test and Pearson analysis. Results: As a result of this study, the Cobb's angle showed significant difference between the scoliosis group and the normal group (p<0.001). Also, it tended to have a greater stress level in the scoliosis group than the relationship between scoliosis and the stress or study-attitude compared to the normal group (p<0.05). The correlation of stress according to Cobb's angle showed a positive relationship (r=0.36), and the correlation of study-attitude to Cobb's angle showed a negative relationship (r=-0.04). Conclusion: In conclusion, this study showed that scoliosis affects stress and study-attitude. We hope that this result would help diagnose adolescent's scoliosis in anearly stage and prevent any phychologic and social problems relating to it.

  • Summary : This study was designed to identify the difference in temperament, parent-adolescent's goodness of fit and behavioral problems between early-adolescent high risk group which can be divided into subgroups (ADHD-I and ADHD-HI/C) and normal group. Method : Subjects of this study were students of a Boy's Middle School and their parents. ADHD high risk group was determined by using three rating scales of ADHD behavioral symptoms : 1. Korean-ADHD Rating Scale, 2. Abbreviated Conners Parents Rating Scale, 3. Conners-Wells' Adolescent Self-Report Scale. Final research was based on the subjects including 25 people in ADHD-I high risk group, 70 ADHD-HI/C high risk group, 70 in normal group. Revised Dimensions of Temperament (DOTS-R) was used for students to assess their temperament, while DOTS-R : Ethnology for parents to access environmental demands. Goodness of fit between parent and adolescent was figured out by results of the two scales. Korean Youth Self Report (K-YSR) was used to examine behavioral problems. Results : When it comes to temperament of adolescents, ADHD-HI/C high risk group was found to be associated with higher scores on general activity level. In contextual parent demand to adolescent, ADHD-HI/C parents showed higher level of demands in general activity than other groups, and lower expectation of positive mood than ADHD-I parents. In parent-adolescent's goodness/poorness of fit, the research found out that ADHD-I and ADHD-HI/C had lower level of fit on pesitive/negative mood than normal group and indicated that ADHD behavioral symptoms connected with poorness of fit in emotional relationship between adolescents and their parents. In behavioral problems, ADHD-HI/C high risk group had severe externalizing and internalizing problems distinctly. It had more severe in externalizing problems than ADHD-I, while there were no differences in internalizing problems between the two subgroups. Conclusion The two ADHD subgroups in high risk adolescents had differences on temperamental activity level and on goodness of fit about positive mood. In addition, they had different patterns in externalizing/internalizing problems.
