  • Purpose : Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile is the questionnaire to evaluate sensory processing based on daily activities. Self-questionnaire commonly tends to be biased to the characteristics of subject, so its validity is low. This study aims to analyze correlation between questions of Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile and tactile threshold measured from cognitive behavioral experiment. Methods : The tactile threshold was calculated by tactile detection task and tactile stimuli were provided with the consistent current stimulator. The tactile threshold was compared with results of tactile processing items in Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile and statistical correlation analysis was performed. Results : Scores in Low Registration and Sensation Seeking had positive correlation with the tactile threshold and scores in Sensory Sensitivity and Sensation Avoiding had negative correlation with the tactile threshold. Among them, only Low Registration was statistically significant. Conclusion : The questions in Low Registration(Tactile Processing)are highly correlated with physiological characteristics. As a result, it was shown that sensory inflow is less, if the tactile threshold is high.

  • The person's behaviors are interactive with sensory processing ability. So sensory processing ability is very important. Most of tools which evaluate sensory processing are developed for the child. But sensory integrated problems are not restricted to the child. It is possible for sensory integrative problems to happen independent of the intellectual level and the social stratum. And sensory integrative problems are distributed in all age. Adults who have a sensory defensiveness use various coping strategies. But it does not solve a basic sensory defensive problem. Previous studies reported the fact that the sensory integrative treatment has a high treatment effect in these people. In this paper, we present the necessity for adult's sensory processing evaluating tool. We introduces Adolescent/Adult Sensory profile to be translated into Korean. It will discriminate adults who have sensory defensiveness from adult. It will provide these people with the suitable help.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of sensory diet home program for children with autism spectrum disorder who have sensory defensiveness and explore how this intervention affect to sensory modulation and social interaction ability. Methods : The subject of this case study was a 12-year-old girl with autism spectrum disorder who was struggling with her sensory modulation problem. Parent interview and evaluations were conducted and subject-tailored sensory diet home program was made by the therapist. Parent education for the home program was provided to parents and everyday, 3 times, 30minutes of home program activities were conducted to the child for 23 days. Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile and Social Maturity Scale were measured at pre and post intervention and parent wrote daily observation record about child during the intervention. Results : After the intervention, Low Registration, Sensory Sensitivity, Sensation Avoiding area of Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile included to the normal range and the scores of the Social Maturity Scale improved. Conclusions : Child's sensory defensiveness was relieved and sensory modulation and controling emotion ability were improved. While there was significant improvement for sensory modulation and social interaction ability, this was a case study and there was only one subject. So we need to study with larger sample size to generalize this intervention's effectiveness.

  • Background: This study was undertaken to evaluate how gender differences affect the sensory processing by the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile(ASP) which evaluates the behavioral responses of adults to everyday sensory experiences. Methods: The study period lasted one month which was June 2009, and the study subjects were 325(three hundred twenty five) people who were healthy and reside in Chungcheong province including Daejeon. Detailed information about the study was explained to the study group and the ASP questionnaires were drawn up by them personally. Results: On average, the study group scores similarly in low registration, sensation seeking, sensory sensitivity, and sensation avoiding. According to the sensory processing abilities by gender, the group obtained scores indicating performance similar to most people in low registration, sensation seeking, and sensory sensitivity, except for sensation avoiding. Furthermore, in the taste/smell processing of "I only eat familiar foods", sensation avoiding score was higher in females than males, and in the activity level of "I find time to get away from my busy life and spend time by myself", males' sensation avoiding scored higher than females. Conclusion: In the study of differences of sensory processing abilities of adults by gender using the ASP, gender differences were revealed in the category of sensation avoiding.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the sensory processing of adults with intellectual disabilities by Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile(AASP). AASP was executed for 98 adults with intellectual disabilities residing in nursing home. The score of sensory processing ability expressed the conditions of being 'Less Than Most People' and 'Much Less Than Most People' in the all sensory processing areas of Low Registration, Sensory Sensitivity, Sensory Seeking, Sensory Avoiding. There was not significant difference in the sex. The score of sensory processing ability between teenagers(11 years to 17 years) and adult(above 18 years), teenagers statistically showed lower scores in the three sensory processing areas of Low Registration, Sensory Seeking, and Sensory Sensitivity. In addition, there was significant difference in the sensory processing areas of Low Registration and Sensory Avoiding according to the disability grading. In the future research, it is suggested to examine the sensory processing within residual setting and it need a study comparing sensory processing skills according to the disability grading by increasing subjects.

  • Objective: This study was to provide a standard for the evaluation of The Korean version of Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile(K-ASP) for University students and to investigate the difference of the subjective sense recognition regarding the characteristics of sensory processing. Method: The subjects consisted of 84 University students. A researcher examined subjective sense recognition and K-ASP for subjects. Visual Analog Scale used to evaluate subjective sense recognition and K-ASP was utilized to evaluate the characteristics of sensory processing. Results: 1. The average scores and standard deviation of K-ASP were $32.93{\pm}7.88$ for low registration group, $39.39{\pm}6.55$ for sensory seeking group, $38.94{\pm}9.13$ for sensory sensitivity group, and $34.24{\pm}7.85$ for sensory avoiding group. 2. The correlation between the total score on an each quadrant and the subjective sense recognition are -.27 for low registration group, .11 for sensory seeking group, .09 for sensory sensitivity group and .12 for sensory avoiding group. It showed the statistically significant correlation between the total score of low registration and the subjective sense recognition group(p<.05). 3. The average scores and standard deviation of the subjective sense recognition were $5.22{\pm}1.56$ for high threshold and $7.28{\pm}1.70$ for low threshold. The subjective sense recognition according to the characteristics of sensory processing showed the statistically significant difference. Conclusions: This study supports the theory that there is the difference of sensory recognition according to each individual and we found that people with difficulties of sensory processing acknowledge their characteristics of sensory processing well. Evaluation of sensory processing ability through interview or questionnaire supports the fact which it is reliable.

  • Objective : We investigated how sensory processing patterns contribute to temperament and character traits in undergraduate students. Methods : A total of 107 undergraduate students were recruited in September 2022 via convenient sampling method. They completed the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile and the Temperament and Character Inventory. Multiple regression models were applied to analyze the effect of sensory processing quadrants (low registration, sensation seeking, sensory sensitivity, sensation avoiding) on each temperament (novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, persistence) and character (self-directedness, cooperativeness, self-transcendence) traits. Results : Sensation seeking significantly predicted high levels of novelty seeking, reward dependence, persistence, self-directedness, and self-transcendence but low harm avoidance. Low registration predicted high harm avoidance but low levels of reward dependence, persistence, and self-directedness. Reward dependence was predicted by high sensory sensitivity and low sensation avoiding. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that sensory processing patterns affected novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, persistence, self-directedness, and self-transcendence in young adults.
