The adolescents' self differentiation level was measured based on Bowen's family system theory modified for Korean adolescents(Je, 1989) and their school adjustment level was measured with developed for Korean adolescents(Park, 1998). Collected data were analyzed by Mean${\pm}$SD, t-test, ANOVA and Schefff and Pearson correlation coefficient (SPSS 12.0). Results: 1. The mean score for the level of self differentiation was $99.99{\pm}11.58$ and school adjustment was $63.52{\pm}8.80$. 2. The self differentiation level was different according to father's education and monthly income. The school adjustment level was different according to glade, sex father's education and father's occupation. 3. Self differentiation had a significant positive correlation with school adjustment. Conclusion: The self differentiation level was confirmed to have an influence on school adjustment. We need to develop a program that can enhance adolescents' self differentiation.

The stepwise regression analyses yielded the results that relationship with the teacher, relationship with the peer, father's caring, birth order and economic status of family were significant factors in explaining the adolescents' school adjustment. On the base of the results of the study, the following suggestions were made in order to enhance adolescents' school adjustment: 1. Teacher education focused on guidance and counseling should be included in the teacher education and training program. 2. Parents education focused on fatherhood should be more emphasized.

For this purpose, the data of 192 persons from 40 villages in 8 provinces were analyzed using a SAS 8.1 program. The results of the analysis were as follows : 1) The overall degree of school life adjustment was quantified as about 67 points out of a 100 possible points. 2) The variables that affected the level of adjustment were self-esteem, healthiness of family, age. 3) The explanatory power of such variables as sex, religion, personality, school grades, father satisfaction, and mother satisfaction partially affected significantly in four sub-areas (teather relation, friend relation, attitude of classwork and rule of school areas) of adjustment. • The purpose of this study was to find the mediation effect of school adjustment between perceived parental attitude and mental health in adolescents. 544 adolescents who live in Chungbuk filled out questionnaires. Data were analyzed by regression analysis with SPSS 18.0 version. Results showed significant relationships between socio-economic variables and main variables. Female showed higher depression and suicidal ideation than male. Higher performance group perceived parental attitude more positively, showed lower level of depression and suicidal ideation, and higher level of school adjustment than lower performance group. In addition, perceived parental attitude was a predictor of adolescent' mental health. School adjustment proved to have the mediating effect on depression and suicidal ideation overall. The specific interventions are associated with the increase of professionals and prevention program with parents, and the activation of school welfare.

  • Objectives: The school adjustment problems of the adolescence groups become more aggravated and are on the increase. The objective of this study is to identify the causal relationship of intra-family conflicts, self-concept and school adjustment as health protection behavior. Methods: The study setting is the adolescence groups. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaires from the middle and high school students in Seoul. The study sample consisted of 268 students. Structural Equation Modeling(SEM) analysis was conducted to find the causal relationship of intra-family conflicts, self-concept and school adjustment. Results: This study shows that firstly, the total effects of intra-family conflicts have a negative effect on self-concept(path coefficients=-0.080) and school adjustment(path coefficients=-0.107). And the self-concept factor as an intervening variable are affecting positively on school adjustment(path coefficients=0.411). Secondly, the economic conflicts, personaliy conflicts and social activity conflicts of father and mother among various family conflicts are more highly affecting on self-concept and school adjustment(p<0.01) Conclusions: These results imply that first, communication between parents and students is essential to solve the problems of school adjustment. Especially economic conflicts should be solved to improve the self-concept and school adjustment. second, a variety of programs are available for schools to employ in an effort to provide interventions for students who demonstrate school adjustment. Finally, it is necessary for family, school and all the society members to comprehensively cooperate to solve family conflicts and school adjustment.

  • Many adolescents in high schools are experiencing school maladjustment by academic stress under the reality of higher-education-oriented schooling. A review of studies of academic stress and school adjustment reveals that ego-optimism is predicted as one of the moderating variables to help adolescents lessen academic stress and increase their school adjustment. The main purpose of this study was to verify the moderating effects of ego-resilience on the relationship between academic stress and school adjustment of adolescents. For this, 496 high school students of tenth and eleventh grade were respectively collected through cluster sampling to be surveyed, and then correlation analysis and moderated regression analysis were conducted. The major findings were as follows. First, there was a negative relationship between academic stress and school adjustment and between academic stress and ego-resilience, but a positive relationship between school adjustment and ego-resilience. Second, the moderating effects of ego-resilience on the relationship between academic stress and school adjustment were not found, although optimism, one of ego-resilience's sub-factors, had a significant moderating effect on them, implying that adolescents' optimism should be enhanced to lessen academic stress and ensure they have a successful school life. The study concludes that optimism is a protective factor for school adjustment caused academic stress and thus schools need to make active efforts to enhance their students' optimism.

  • The present investigation of the relations among economic hardship, parental child-rearing attitudes and adjustment in adolescence was carried out with 528 middle school children and their mothers in Kyung-gi province. Questionnaires for mothers were on economic stress, and children's questionnaires were on perceived parental attitudes as well as their own adjustment behaviors, such as aggression, depression, and negative self-concept. Adolescent boys perceived paternal child-rearing attitudes more rejecting and inconsistent when the family experienced income loss. Paternal nurturing behaviors perceived by children were also reduced under poor paternal working conditions. Change in family life style due to economic hardship resulted in higher adolescent depression.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of self-differentiation, self-esteem and school adjustment among adolescents. Methods: The data were collected from 508 adolescents and analyzed using n (%), t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression with the SPSS 16.0program. Results: First, School adjustment was different for grade, gender, level of mother's education, and economics level. Second, Subjects of self-differentiation was the average score 102 points, self-esteem average score 27.3 points and school adjustment average score 63.6 points.. Third, Self-differentiation and self-esteem had a significant positive correlation with school adjustment. Fourth, Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that family regression, emotional cutoff, recognition emotional function and family projection in self-differentiation, self-esteem and gender(female), level of mother's education(above university), and grade(high) explained 46.5% of the total variance in school adjustment. Conclusion: Self-differentiation and self-esteem were confirmed as having an influence on school adjustment. We need to develop a nursing intervention program that can manage adolescent's school adjustment. When providing such programs, the family must be included.

  • Objectives : We developed the short form of the Mentalization Improvement Program for Adolescent-Community Model (MIPAdo-CM-S), based on the concept of the mentalization. Methods : The MIPAdo-CM was composed of 6 sessions and was applied to 133 students in the 1st grade of a middle school for six weeks during their regular school hours. After 6 weeks, we compared the endpoint changes of Adolescent Mental Problem Questionnaire-Revised (AMPQ-R), Emotional Empathy Test, Peer Aggression Scale, Peer Bullying Scale, School Adjustment Scale, Test Anxiety Inventory and Visual Analogue Scale between the subject and the control group. Results : On the Visual Analoge Scale, students in the trial classes reported an increased understanding and respect for others, as well as themselves. Conclusion : The efficacy of MIPAdo-CM was subjective improvement of understanding and respect for both others and themselves. To prove objective usefulness of this program, further studies should be administered in the form of long-term, regular and structured courses.
