  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of bullying victimization on depressive symptoms in adolescents, and to determine how depression depends on resilience. Methods : A total of 4,160 students were recruited, from middle and high schools in Goheung, Yeosu, and the Jangheung area of Jeollanam-do Province. All participants completed self-report questionnaires, that included demographic variables, the Beck Depression inventory (BDI) the School Bullying Self-Rating Questionnaire (SBSRQ), and the Resilience Test (RT). Results : Prevalence of depression was 30.3%. A total of 220 (5.3%) students were evaluated likely to be bullied and 45 (1.1%) students were evaluated very likely to be bullied. Depressive symptoms positively correlated with bullying victimization. Depressive symptoms and resilience, bullying victimization and resilience negatively correlated. Results from regression analyses indicated that, while controlling for a range of demographic variables, resilience moderated the association between bullying victimization and depressive symptoms. Conclusion : Based on the results, professionals must consider resilience for treatment to reduce depression in adolescents of bullying victimization.

  • Objectives: Alcohol problems of parents have an influence on not only their psychological problems but also on their children's psychosocial adaptation. The purpose of this study was to compare the emotional and behavioral problems, including school bullying and social skills, between children of alcoholics (COAs) and children of non-alcoholics (non-COAs). Methods: We recruited $4^{th}$ grade children (n=741) from 7 primary schools in Seoul and their parents as subjects. The self-rated psychiatric symptoms were assessed with the Korean version of the Children of Alcoholics Screening Test (CAST-K), the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale (RSES), the School Bullying Scale, the Social Skill Rating Scale and the Korean version of Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire-Adolescent (AEQ-A). The Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Rating Scale-IV (ARS) was completed by the parents. Results: 518 children were non-COAs and 223 were COAs. The COAs showed higher CDI and ARS-IV scores and lower RSES scores than the non-COAs. Especially, the COAs also showed higher school bullying scale scores and lower cooperative scale scores on the social skill rating scales. But there was no difference of alcohol expectancy between the COAs and non-COAs. Conclusion: It was plausible that the COAs had more behavioral & psychosocial problems than the non-COAs among the school aged children. It is important to identify and intervene to solve the problems of peer relationships of school age COAs in order to prevent victimization by bullying and to improve psychosocial adaptation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the risk of school bullying victimization and the risk of Internet gaming disorder according to gender in adolescents. Methods: The data of 1,920 middle school students collected at the baseline of the Internet user Cohort for Unbiased Recognition of gaming disorder in Early Adolescence (iCURE) study were analyzed. For statistical analysis, $x^2$ test, t-test and stratified multiple logistic regression analysis were conducted using SAS 9.4. Results: The prevalence rate of Internet gaming disorder of middle school boys was greater than that of girls (Boys: 9.9%, Girls: 6.2%). The greater the risk of school bullying victimization, the greater both the risk of Internet gaming disorder and the average daily time spent on Internet gaming. In girls, the relationship between the experience of being bullied in school and Internet gaming disorder was not statistically significant. However, the boys who had been bullied in school were 3.2 times more vulnerable to the risk of Internet gaming disorder than those without such experience (95% CI: 1.135-8.779). Conclusions: When considering interventions for Internet gaming disorder for adolescents, bullying victimization should be taken into account as well. Particularly, relieving stress related to bullying victimization can be important for boys with Internet gaming disorder.

Method: Data were collected by questionnaires from 467 students in middle schools from May 19 to 30, 2008. Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression procedures. Result: 1. The students investigated received a mean score of 2.76 and 3.01 on attachment for fathers and mothers respectively. They received a mean score of 3.32 on self-control. The most prevalent self-perceived problem behavior among the students was going home late at night without permission followed by bullying friends for no reason and drinking. 2. Among parent-adolescent attachment, self-control and problem behavior, parent-adolescent attachment had a positive correlation to self-control and a negative correlation to problem behavior. 3. Self-control had a mediating effect on the relationship between parent-adolescent attachment and problem behavior. Conclusion: Parent-adolescent attachment influenced problem behavior through the mediating effect of self-control, and is expected to lay the foundation for the prevention of adolescent problem behavior.

We developed a new school-based community model for mental health, called the Mentalization Improvement Program for Adolescent-Community Model (MIPAdo-CM), based on the concept of mentalization. Methods : The MIPAdo-CM was composed of 12 sessions and was applied to 403 students in the 2nd grade of a middle school. Every session was conducted after the regular school hours for 6 weeks. After 6 weeks, we compared the endpoint changes of Adolescent Mental Problem Questionnaire-Revised (AMPQ-R), Emotional Empathy Test (EET), Peer Aggression Scale (PAS), Peer Bullying Scale (PBS), School Adjustment Scale (SAS), Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI) and Visual Analogue Scale between the subject and the control group. Results : There was no significant difference between two groups in AMPQ-R, EET, PAS, PBS, SAS, and TAI. On the Visual Analoge Scale, however, students in the trial classes reported more increase in understanding and respect for both others and themselves. Conclusion : The efficacy of MIPAdo-CM was subjective improvement of understanding and respect for both others and themselves, erence between two groups in AMPQ-R, Empathy test, To prove objective usefulness of this program, further studies with more structured design will be needed.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to compare the demographic characteristics, responses to negative emotions, and difficulties in emotion regulation between self-harming adolescents and control individuals aged 12-14 years from the community. Methods: Data were collected from adolescents in Chungcheong Province, South Korea, between September 2021 and November 2022. Demographic characteristics and responses to the Depressed Mood Questionnaire and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-16 (DERS-16) were compared between the self-harm and control groups. Results: The self-harm group exhibited a higher prevalence of child abuse (odds ratio [OR]=4.787, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.591-14.409, p=0.005) and school bullying victimization (OR=4.495, 95% CI=2.353-8.588, p<0.001) than those in the control group. The self-harm group displayed higher levels of rumination (t=7.88, p<0.001) and reduced distraction responses (reverse score t=2.25, p=0.025) than those of the control group. Additionally, the self-harm group scored higher on all subscales and the total DERS-16 score (t=7.61, p<0.001). Conclusion: Interventions for self-harming adolescents should address child abuse and bullying victimization. Prevention programs for self-harming adolescents should focus on reducing rumination responses, increasing distractive responses, and addressing difficulties in emotion regulation using dialectical behavior therapy-skill training.
