A Study on the correlation between a streetscape image and a signboard density - Focused on roadside buildings occupation density of signboard in the business area - (가로경관이미지와 간판밀도와의 상관관계에 관한 연구 - 상업지역 연도건물의 간판 점유밀도를 중심으로 -)

  • The street image in a business area is so much affected by Facade that the front side of a roadside building makes. Recently, for the indiscreet and intemperate advertising signboard of the front side of roadside buildings, a streetscape becomes more disordered than before, so now we need to do research about signboards of roadside buildings for a streetscape image. In this research, we focused on a streetscape with difference of occupation density of signboard in the business area via investigation and analysis about occupation density of signboards of the front side of roadside buildings, and we suggested optimum occupation density of signboards for supporting the road image positively. An object of research is the street in the business area that has many pedestrians and active passing zone of cars. We investigated and analyzed how to feel street images on the rate of occupation density of roadside building's signboards of in the chosen street. As a result of using an adjective that we use for estimating street view images for extraction of street images, we could know 2 factors. We named that one is the image of recognition, and the other is the image of feelings. We knew that signboard density of street of heavily recognized images is from 20% to 30% and, signboard density of street of heavily feeling images is from 50% to 60%. We also could know that people feel both images of recognition and images of feeling in specific density, 30 to 50%. Through this result of research, we can suggest Facade on signboard density with the recognition and the feeling and use images of the street view as materials to be more specific and more special.

An Analysis of the Image and Visual Preference of a Light Rail Pier according to Aesthetic Styles (경전철 교각의 미관개선유형별 이미지 및 시각적 선호도 분석)

  • The Daegu Metropolitan Transit Corporation Advisory Committee has chosen 5 styles of bridge-pier designs, including coating, graphic, planting, billboard and safety-facility style, based on the results of landscape simulations from a previous study. This study was conducted to investigate citizen's preferences and emotional images for each style of bridge-pier design, by aiming at the pilot urban landscape improvement section from Daebong Bridge in Suseong Gu to the crossroads near Dongseong Elementary School in Daegu Metropolitan City. The questionnaire was drawn up regarding the urban landscape improvement plans applied to the research area, and the questions were about citizens' perception of bridge-pier structures generated by constructing a light rail transit, important factors to consider when designing bridge piers, preferences for each style of bridge-pier design and emotional impact. 60.4% of the survey participants were found to perceive bridge-pier structures as unattractive, so it was necessary to improve them aesthetically. Regarding visual factors of bridge-pier designs, color was most important at 5.81, followed by form at 5.57. Regarding aesthetic component factors, harmony was most important at 6.07, followed by amenity at 6.00. In the survey participants' preference for each bridge-pier design, the graphic style was preferred most at 4.14, followed by the planting style. In emotional adjectives used for each bridge-pier design, the coating style, the safety-facility style and the non-treatment style showed similar results, and all of these styles were evaluated as artificial, lifeless and desolate. The graphic style and the billboard style showed different tendencies, depending on visual factors and aesthetic component factors applied to the graphic design used for these two bridge-pier styles. Since natural materials were used for the planting style, however, it showed high preference for such emotional images as natural and lively. The emotional adjective 'amiable' was found to affect citizens' preferences for each bridge-pier aesthetic improvement plan most, and it was also analyzed to have an effect on all the styles of bridge-pier designs. To improve the landscape of a light rail transit being constructed inside the urban area, this study quantitatively extracted citizens' preferences and emotional adjective for every style of bridge-pier design applied to the pilot urban landscape improvement section, and it is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data to improve the landscape of bridge piers.

Study on images of technical high school students toward 'engineering' through semantic differential method (의미분별법에 의한 공업계 고등학생의 '공학'에 대한 이미지 연구)

  • This research aims to understand how students of technical high schools view 'engineering' as well as to identify the main elements that contribute to the perception on 'engineering.' The research targets are 695 senior students of technical high schools nationwide. The researcher developed the measuring tool for the experiment by referencing the adjective value criteria utilized in the semantic difference method developed by Osgood (1957). There were a grand total of 30 criteria following the preliminary studies. The results of the research are as follows. Firstly, the average value of the overall perception of technical high school students on 'engineering' is 4.27 points. This value just exceeds the standard (4 points). Secondly, when examining the general tendency it can be noticed that there is a sense of stigma that although 'engineering' is significant and valuable it is a field that is overly difficult, complex and even dangerous. Thirdly, 6 main elements that influence the perception on 'engineering' were extracted as results of the factor analysis. The first element is practicality; the second element is emotions; the third element is aesthetics; the fourth is simplicity; the fifth is responsibility; and finally the sixth element is assertiveness. Fourthly, when comparing the average values of the perception on 'engineering' by region, it was seen that there existed a difference on the perception towards 'engineering' based on differing regions.

Visual Improvement Analysis of Small Scale Urban Regeneration Projects Focusing on '72 Hour Project' (72시간 프로젝트로 본 소규모 유휴공간 재생 프로젝트의 경관적 개선 효과)

  • This research studied the effect of visual improvement of "72 Hour Project" that has regenerated small scale derelict spaces in Seoul through citizen participation. 29 projects built form 2016 to 2019 were analyzed. The research analyzed landscape image preference of before and after status of projects using 12 pairs of landscape adjectives. Basic statistical analysis, correlation analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and ANOVA were performed based on the survey results. Since the satisfaction level of the projects compared with the before-condition was 3.63 higher than 3.00, it could be concluded that there was an meaningful effect of visual improvement after completion of the projects. As the result of the factor analysis, landscape adjective pairs were categorized into two factors: harmony and aesthetics. Through the cluster analysis, four clusters were formed and characteristics of each cluster were identified. As the result of rhe cluster analysis, the cluster with the high harmony level and the aesthetics level showed the highest overall satisfaction level. Comparing each cluster, it could be concluded that the factor of harmony was more important than the factor of aesthetics in evaluating the satisfaction level of projects. Analyzing qualitative aspects of project groups, spatially well-balanced design with generous vegetation areas was more effective in landscape improvement than artistic design with visually strong installations. Further researches based on behavior studies of actual users are required to compensate the limits of this research. This research can contribute to establish the improved direction of policies to regenerate various types of small scale derelict spaces.

Investigating the Relationship Between Vehicle Front Images and Voice Assistants (자동차 전면부와 음성 어시스턴트의 스타일 관계 분석)

  • In the context of the increasing applications of voice assistants in vehicles, we focused on the association between the visual appeal of the cars and the acoustic characteristics of the voice assistants. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the visual appeal of the vehicle and the voice assistant based on their emotional characteristics. A total of 15 adjectives were used to assess the emotional characteristics of 12 types of cars and six types of voices. An online interview was carried out, instructing participants to match three adjectives with the presented car images or voices. This was followed with a brief interview to allow the participants to reflect on the adjective matches. Based on the assessments, we performed principal component analysis (PCA) to determine factors. We aimed to deploy the cars and voices and analyze the patterns of clustering. The PCA analysis revealed two factors profiled as "Light-Heavy" and "Comfortable-Radical." Both car and voice stimuli were deployed in a two-dimensional space showing the internal relationship within and between the two substances. Based on the coordination data, a hierarchical cluster grouped the 18 stimuli into four groups labeled as challenge, elegance, majesty, and vigor. This study identified two latent factors describing the emotional characteristics of both car images and voice types clustered into four groups based on their emotional characteristics. The coherent matches between car style and voice type are expected to address the design concept more successfully.

A Study on the Relationship between Visual Preferences and Visitors' Satisfaction in Bukhansan Dulegil (북한산 둘레길 경관선호도와 이용만족도의 상관성에 관한 연구)

  • In nature, to change the consciousness of those who wish to pursue something new, the road is turning function-oriented 'Walking Path' into purpose-oriented 'Walking Trails'. Though 'Walking Trails' is a long linear journey that leads people to see, to feel and to experience while walking on the trail, but considering on the landscape of trails when selecting routes is lacking. Landscapes, which are felt and perceived while walking on the trail, provide a purpose, and can be an important factor to improve visitor satisfaction. However, the study is insufficient in terms of landscape of trails. Therefore, it is the purpose of this study to find ways to help improving visitors' satisfaction in selecting routes, by analyzing the images and preferences of trails landscapes that are visually perceived, by analyzing the correlation between visitors' satisfaction and them. For this study, landscape assessment was carried out after selecting representative landscape photos of BukhansanDulegil 13 sections and landscape images adjectives for landscape assessment. Through the assessment, analyze landscape images of each section, landscape images factors affecting a wish to walk and landscape preferences, relationship between visitors' satisfaction and them. 'Refreshing' image was higher on the path with many trees and less artificial elements; 'urban' image was higher on the path with artificial elements. 'A wish to walk' and 'landscape preference' was higher on the path showed 'refreshing' and 'pastoral' image with many natural elements. Factors affecting 'a wish to walk' were "refreshing-unpleasant", "impressive-ordinary", factors affecting 'landscape preference' were "refreshing-unpleasant", "comfortable-uncomfortable". In addition, landscape preference was found to have a high correlation with visitors' satisfaction.

Research on the Visual Historical & Cultural Resources of Seongbuk-dong (서울 성북동 역사문화자원 주변경관의 시각적 특성연구)

  • In this study, Seongbuk-dong historical & cultural resources of the surrounding landscape were analyzed by the visual characteristics of the landscape adjective analysis. Research was investigate to the relationship between visual characteristics and preferences and Research in the following way. Selected historical and cultural resources in the surrounding area are located in Seongbuk-dong 30 slices the survey was conducted. Landscape preference factors to identify the scale of 16 adjectives and then factor analysis was conducted. Lastly, Analysis of variance and regression analysis were conducted in order to determine the impact of the last image factors on visual preferences. Firstly, The results can be summarized as follows. Officer for 30 pictures appear in Seongbuk-dong in the historical and cultural resources, and distributed around the target preference for the 16 adjectives analysis yielded an average result of overall preference were analyzed and that is a 3.72 average. In these photos, VP8, VP9, VP10, VP12, VP15; 4.5 points more than one order higher. The reason is limit of altitude by the Seoul landscape plan for the historical and cultural resources around. It also judged important reason that history and Culture are in harmony with the surrounding cultural property in the conservation area. Secondly, Important factors are factor 1(aesthetic factors), factor 2(cultural factors), factor 3(physical factors) and three factors could be identified. Results of the analysis of variance and regression analysis about factors for visual preference and image shows value of psychological factor is most significant to explain for nearby history &cultural resources of Seongbuk-dong of scenery around. As a result, the state can not view historical and cultural resources for analysis will be located in a residential area near the historical and cultural resources for aesthetic factors. Third, the negative side of the argument is a residential area which is not arranged surrounding landscape maintenance of historical and cultural resources has emerged. Historical and cultural resources in harmony with the phenomena of the physical, cultural, and aesthetic characteristics of the three areas is a positive factor in the high incidence. Factors from that are expressed in this study by analyzing multi-dimensional analysis to derive a factor to be considered important in the management of historical and cultural resources, landscape around is required.
