  • This study reports a fabrication of $TiO_2$ on the surface of dental implants by pulsed d.c. magnetron sputtering from a Ti target. A systematic investigation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of $TiO_2$ films was carried out with the variation of $O_2$ contents and substrate temperatures. The effects of deposition parameters on the fabricated structures were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Hydrophilic properties were evaluated by measuring water contact angles on the film surface. With increasing $O_2$ contents up to 40%, surface roughness of $TiO_2$ film increased while relatively smooth surface was obtained with 50% $O_2$ contents. Surface roughness and adhesion strength both increased as substrate temperature increased up to $200^{\circ}C$. From these results, hydrophilic and adhesive properties of the present $TiO_2$ films synthesized with 40% $O_2$ at $200^{\circ}C$ are regarded to be suitable for bio-compatible applications.

  • Blending method was applied to increase the performance of hydrogen peroxide which is called green propellant. 90 wt.% hydrogen peroxide was blended with ethanol which is less toxic fuel, and there was no storability decrease due to fuel addition. Inconel X750 and Tophet A showed good compatibility and high heat resistance, and SUS 316L was compatible. $Al_2O_3$, $Y_2O_3$, and $ZrO_2$, were coated on the material to improve heat resistance, and it was proved from endurance test that $Y_2O_3$ coating is not suitable and adhesive strength between coating and material is related with allowable temperature of material. Thruster test was performed to confirm the performance increase by blending method, and chamber temperature was $870^{\circ}C$ which is higher than $760^{\circ}C$ that is adiabatic chamber temperature of 90 wt.% hydrogen peroxide.

  • To improve the pot life of one-part in-house anisotropic conductive paste (ACP) formulations, 2-methyl imidazole curing accelerator powders were encapsulated with five agents. Through measuring the melting point of the five agents using DSC, it was confirmed that a encapsulation process with liquid-state agents is possible. Viscosity of ACP formulations containing the encapsulated imidazole powders was measured as a function of storage time from viscosity measurements. As a result, pot life of the formulations containing imidazole powders encapsulated with stearic acid and carnauba wax was improved, and these formulations indicated similar curing behaviors to a basic formulation containing rare imidazole. However, the bondlines made of these formulations exhibited low average shear strength values of about 37% level in comparison with the basic formulation.

  • Typical aging for the rubber using the current military adhesive combat boots was spread with a regular aging caused by heat stress. In this study, the aging test of the rubber for combat boots was carried out and the reaction rate constant, k was calculated at aging temperature $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, using the Arrhenius equation. The lifetime limit was assumed that the tensile strength of the product is reduced to 30%, the elongation is reduced to 50% and abrasion resistance ratio is 380%. ln($P/P_0$) and the lifetime was predicted with the consideration of the activation energy constant. According to the above, the lifetime of the rubber for combat boots with influenced by aging temperature was predicted. As the result, the estimate lifetime at $20^{\circ}C$ was confirmed more than 10 years.

  • The applicable scope of adhesives in the current society is broad and currently, several types of PVAc resin are sold in the market for adhesives. PVAc resin is primarily used for wood works and paper adhesion. However, the PVAc resin itself has the disadvantages that its viscosity is highly temperature- dependent and the work condition and viscosity get worse at the low temperature in the winter seasons. Although phthalate-based plasticizer is used to complement these disadvantages, adhesion strength and heat-resistance are weakened by adding the phthalate-based plasticizer and in the winter period, the amount of quantity should be increased. Also in a high-density product, it worsens the work condition by causing a rise of viscosity and delays curing and in a low-density product, it worsens the storage stability by causing separate precipitation. In addition to these, the phthalate-based plasticizer as a material of causing environmental hormones is currently restricted in the advanced countries for its amount of use and also in the domestic market, it is necessary to prepare for the situation. This study has not only eliminated the disadvantages of PVAc resin emulsion without adding a phthalate-based plasticizer of causing these problems, but also synthesized the PVAc resin for timber adhesion that is excellent in woodwork, thermal-resistance, water-resistance, storage stability, and adhesion performance. As the result, it has proven an excellent performance in thermal resistance, water resistance, storage stability, and minimum film forming temperature.

  • This study was carried out to compare the characteristics of low density fiberboards (LDFs) manufactured with different adhesive types such as melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF), phenol formalehyde (PF), emulsified MDI (eMDI) and latexes resins. As results, hard LDFs were successfully manufactured by MUF, PF and eMDI resins. Thermal conductivities of all LDFs were significantly lower than commercial medium density fiberboard. Especially, all LDFs showed comparable thermal insulation performance with extruded polystyrene foam (XPS). LDF manufactured with eMDI resins showed the highest physical properties such as thickness/length swelling by water absorption and bending strength.

  • We examined characterizations of Paraloid B72 films when it dissolved in four different solvents-acetone, MEK, toluene and xylene. The surface before and after coating were observed by optical microscope and AFM. Thickness and contact angle of films was measured and surface energy was calculated for grasping properties of films. We also tested adhesive strength of films by scratch tester and durability of films by performing yellowing test. The result was that xylene has better coating property than other solvents. Because 10% Paraloid B72 in xylene film is even, non-mottled, thin, stabilized in yellowish and has proper hydrophobic, we confirmed xylene is good solvent for bronze artifact conservation. However, other tests will need for finding appropriate concentration of Paraloid B72.

  • We first synthesized N-phenylcyclotrisiloxazane ($D_3^{NPh}$) through a cyclization of $\alpha$,$\omega$- dichlorohexamethyltrisiloxane with aniline and prepared poly(dimethylsiloxane-co-N-phenylsiloxazane) copolymer (PDMS-NPSOX) by a ring opening copolymerization of them with hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane $D_3$. An acrylate monomer modified with PDMS-NPSOX was synthesized by using chloroethyl methacrylate and copolymerized with methylmethacrylate (MMA) and n-butylacrylate. The composition of the copolymer was chosen to control their glass transition temperature ($T_g$) to 25 $^{\circ}C$. By changing the comonomer from PDMS to PDMS-NPSOX, $T_g$ and adhesive strength of the copolymer were increased from 20 to 25 $^{\circ}C$ and from 1.76 to 2.23 N/cm, respectively.

  • FMLC(Fiber-Metal Laminate Composites) is a new structural material combining thin metal laminate with adhesive fiber prepreg, it nearly include all the advantage of metallic materials, for example: good plasticity, impact resistance, processibility, light weight and excellent fatigue properties. This research studied the optimum design of the FMLC subject to various loading conditions using genetic algorithm. The finite element method based on the shear deformation theory was used for the analysis of FMLC. Tasi-Hill failure criterion and Miser yield criterion were taken as fitness functions of the fiber prepreg and the metal laminate, respectively. The design variables were fiber orientation angles. In genetic algorithm, the tournament selection and the uniform crossover method were used. The elitist model was also used to be effective evolution strategy and the creeping random search method was adopted in order to approach a solution with high accuracy. Optimization results were given for various loading conditions and compared with CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). The results show that the FMLC is more excellent than the CFRP in point and uniform loading conditions and it is more stable to unexpected loading because the deviation of failure index is smaller than that of CFRP.
