In a rolling wire probe, a key component of an inspection apparatus for PDP electrode patterns, the electric performance of it is known to be strongly dependent on the surface condition of a collet pin, a needle pin, and a wire. However, the collet and needle pins rotate very rapidly in contact with each other, which results in the degradation of the surface by the heat and friction and finally the formation of black wear marks on the surface after a several hundred hours test. Once the black wear marks appear on the surface, the electric resistance of the probe increases sharply and so the integrity of the probe is severely damaged. In this experiment, TiN coating, which has excellent electric conductances and good wear-resistance, has been applied on the surface of collect and needle pins for preventing the surface damages. In order to achieve the homogeneous coating with a good adhesion property, special coating substrate stages and jigs were designed and applied during coating. TiN has been deposited using 99.999% Titanium target by a DC reactive sputtering method. According to the components and jigs, processing parameters, such as DC power, RF bias and the flow rate ratio of Ar and N$_2$ used as reactive gases, has been controlled to obtain good TiN films. Detailed problems and solutions for applying the new substrate stages and jigs will be discussed.

In this experiment, we have manufactured thermal-curable silver pastes for direct printing. And to enhance conductivity, printability, adhesion and hardness during polymer direct-gravure prints, we have manufactured Ag pastes by adding variety of filter contents. Then we have investigated characteristics of rheology in paste according to the gravure printability and the properties of printed conductive patterns. Depending on a variety of Ag powder, there was a big difference in sharpness of printed pattern. And also by the use of carbon, there was a big difference in amount of solvent used, conductivity and in hardness. We could improve doctoring and the sharpness of a pattern by adding Ag paste in carbon particle, but as we have used nano-sized particle, there was an increase in the amount of solvent used and also we have found out that it gives a bad effect as adhesive and hardness becomes weaker. Even though Ag particle has the same spherical shape, the surface treatments could differ from one another. And by the appropriate choice and with the suitable combination of Ag powder, excellent printability and conductivity could be obtained.
Polyurethane modified acrylate $(PUA)/SiO_2$ hybrid films were prepared by ultraviolet curing and their surface properties were investigated by hardness and adhesion test. The films were examined by the manipulation of mole-ratio of organic to inorganic components. Under the silica content controlled, highly desirable films were achieved and scratch resistance and hardness property of film were also enhanced, which indicates that the crosslinked silica particles are homogeneously dispersed within PUA film.
A simple chemical fixation method for the fabrication of layer-by-layer (LbL) polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) has been developed to create a large area, highly uniform film for various applications. PEM of weak poly-electrolytes, i.e., polyallylamine hydrogen chloride (PAH) and poly(acrylic acid)(PAA), was assembled on polymer substrates such as poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC). In the case of a weak polyelectrolyte, the fabricated thin film thickness of the polyelectrolyte multilayers was strongly dependent on the pH of the processing solution, which enabled the film thickness or optical properties to be controlled. On the other hand, the environmental stability for device application was poor. In this study, we utilized the chemical fixation method using glutaraldehyde (GA)-amine reaction in order to stabilize the polyelectrolyte multilayers. By simple treatment of GA on the PEM film, the inherent morphology was fixed and the adhesion and mechanical strength were improved. Both surface tension and FT-IR measurements supported the chemical cross-linking reaction. The surface property of the polyelectrolyte films was altered and converted from hydrophilic to hydrophobic by chemical modification. The possible application to antireflection coating on PMMA and PC was demonstrated.
Coating brittle intermetallic compounds on metal can enlarge the range of their use. It is found that intermetallic compound coating layers made by only combustion synthesis in an electric furnace have porous multi-phase structures containing several intermediate phases, even though the coating layers show good wear resistance. In this study, dense $Ni_{3}Al$ single phase layer corresponding to the initial composition of the mixed powder is coated on two different ferrous materials by the diffusing treatment after combustion synthesis. After- ward, sliding wear behaviors of the coating layer are evaluated in comparison with that of the coating layer with porous multi-phase structure made by only combustion synthesis. As a result, the wear properties of the coating layer composed of dense $Ni_{3}Al$ single phase are considerably improved at the range of low sliding speed com- pared with that of the coating layer with porous multi-phase structure, particularly in the running-in wear region. This is attributed to the fact that wear of the coating layer is progressed by shearing as a sequence of adhesion, not by occurring of pitting on the worn surface due to having dense structure without pores.

In a micro-scale contact, capillary force and van der Waals interaction significantly influence the contact between asperities of rough surfaces. Little is, however, known about the variation of these surface forces as a function of chemical property of the surface (wet angle), relative humidity and deformation of asperities in the real area of contact. A better understanding of these surface forces is of great necessity in order to find a solution for reducing friction and adhesion of micro surfaces. The objective of this study is to investigate the surface forces in micro-scale rough surface contact. We proposed an effective method to analyze capillary and van der Waals forces in micro-scale contact. In this method, Winkler spring model was employed to analyze the contact of rough surfaces that were obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM) height images. Self-mated contact of DLC(diamond like carbon) coatings was analyzed, as an example, by the proposed model. It was shown that the capillary force was significantly influenced by relative humidity and wet angle of the DLC surface. The deformation of asperities to a critical magnitude by external loading led to a considerable increase of both capillary and van der Waals forces.

Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals and consequently this property is an attractive feature which makes it a leading candidate for use in electronic devices. The research conducted was focused primarily on the development of a process for obtaining a deposited silver-coating onto alumina, for applications related to electrical-conducting devices and, ancillarily, catalysts. Alumina balls and plane substrates were utilized for the investigation. The coating process employed an aqueous ammoniacal silver-nitrate electrolytes with a formaldehyde solution as the reductant. Modifying additives-an activator which would be expected to promote good deposition-characteristics onto the (dielectric) substrate and an inhibitor which would obviate homogeneous reduction (precipitation) of silver was observed when the activator-containing silver-electrolyte reductant constituents were combined. However, the silver-electrolyte/reductant system with inhibitor could be employed (at 8$0^{\circ}C$) to achieve a viable (subject to future research optimization) coating on alumina. The influence of the processing temperature on the deposition process was delineated during the course of the research. The morphology of the deposited-silver on the alumina balls was assessed by SEM imaging. A tape-peel test was employed, with the plane substrates, to semi-quantitatively characterize the adhesion to the alumina.
This article aims to enhance the biodegradability and environment-friendliness of petroleum based biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-succinate-co-terephthalate)(PBAST) by blending chemically modified thermoplastic starch(CMPS). CMPS is a kind of bio-based biodegradable resin which is manufactured by reacting starch with maleic anhydride(MA) in the presence of a plasticizer and a free radical initiator. The characteristic properties of PBAST/CMPS blends were investigated by observing their morphology, thermal, mechanical properties, and biodegradability. The good interfacial adhesion between the phases examined by SEM revealed that PBAST/CMPS blends were compatible blends. The tensile strength and elongation decreased with increasing CMPS content, while modulus increased. The biodegradability of the blends was much higher than that of pristine PBAST and increased with increasing CMPS contents.
Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) is a metastable form of amorphous carbon that have superior material properties such as high mechanical hardness, chemical inertness, abrasion resistance, and biocompatibility. Furthermore, its material properties can be tuned by additional doping such as nitrogen or boron. However, either pure DLC or doped DLC show poor adhesion property that makes it difficult to apply contact processing technique. Therefore we propose ultrafast laser micromachining which is non-contact precision process without mechanical degradation. In this study, we developed precision machining process of DLC thin film using an ultrafast laser by investigating the process window in terms of laser fluence and laser wavelength. We have also demonstrated various patterns on the film without generating any microcracks and debris.

The purpose of this study is to identify the effect of electrolyte compositions on electrodeposited copper foil. First of all, the polyimide substrate was pretreated with plasma. Finally, copper foil was deposited on a Cu/Ni/Polyimide substrate using the electroplating technique. As the quantity of Cu increased, preferred orientations changed into (111). Increasing sulfuric acid, on the other hand, brought down the preferred orientation of (111). The lowest sheet resistance, surface roughness, and fine adhesion were detected when the ratio of $Cu^{2+}$ and $H_2SO_4$ is 50:50(g/l).
