Analysis of worker's Ageing in Small-size Construction Sites in Busan (부산지역 소규모 건설현장 근로자의 고령화 실태조사 및 개선방안)

  • Due to the aging of economically active population in the world, the average age of workers in the domestic construction industry is also steadily increasing. This study analyzes the aging of construction workers in small-size construction sites in Busan, where the aging of the economically active population is the most severe in Korea. As a result of the study on the aging of construction workers in six construction sites with a construction cost of less than 500 million won in Busan, it was found that 65% of the workers were over 50 years of age. In addition, several experts interviews and survey revealed that 'securing welfare facilities for construction workers' and 'diminishing prejudice about the construction industry" were the most urgent and effective methods to overcome the aging problems. The results of this study can be served as basic data to solve the aging problems in the industry.

  • This paper describes the checking results and some problems of guard lamps installed in the field. The guard lamp providing night security for people is installed outdoors and exposed to the natural factors causing secular ageing and the people's vandalism, etc., thus it is prone to get troubles in function. In fact, the guard lamps has been left without considering the fundamental measures in the legislative system in spite of the loss of lives due to the electric shock accidents repetitively taking place every year. This study arouses people's attention to the risk due to the lack of management and maintenance of the guard lamp by investigating the recent technology and the actual operating conditions and some problems and countermeasures were ultimately deduced. In this process, we reflected on the various opinions through fieldwork and had a couple of consultations with field staffs, manufacturers concerned and active officers with local autonomous entities.

Factors Affecting Social Participation of the Elderly Living in Poverty (저소득 노인의 사회참여에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Elderly people living in poverty are one of the most vulnerable population groups who are at risk of experiencing social exclusion. Social participation is an important contributing factor to active aging and social integration of the older adults living in poverty. This study aims to identify factors affecting social participation of the poor elderly. Data from the second wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing was used for the analyses and 1,346 poor elderly aged over 65 were analyzed. The findings showed that age, education, health status, a level of depression, financial stress, and economic activity were associated with the social participation of the elderly living in poverty. These results indicated that psychological empowerment and specific needs of the older adults living in poverty should be considered in developing services and programs to promote social participation of the poor elderly.

  • There is now increasing evidence that free radicals and active oxygen species are involved in a variety of pathological events. often associated with ageing. Free radical-mediated cell damage and free radical attack on polyunsaturated fatty acids result in the formation of lipid radicals. These lipid radicals react readily with molecular oxygen to produce peroxy radicals responsible for initiating lipid peroxidation. The peroxidation of cellular membrane lipid can lead to cell necrosis and considered to be implicated in a number of pathophysiological conditions as well as in the toxicity of many xenobiotics.   • In recent years, methanol has attracted much attention since it can be cleanly manufactured by the combined use of atmospheric $CO_2$ recycling and water splitting via renewable energy. For the concept of "methanol economy", an active methanol synthesis catalyst should be prepared in a sophisticated manner rather than by empirical optimization approach. Even though Cu/ZnO-based catalysts prepared by coprecipitation are well known and have been extensively investigated even for a century, fundamental understanding on the precipitation chemistry and catalyst nanostructure has recently been achieved due to complexity of the necessary preparation steps such as precipitation, ageing, filtering, washing, drying, calcination and reduction. Herein we review the recent reports regarding the effects of various synthesis variables in each step on the physicochemical properties of materials in precursor, calcined and reduced states. The relationship between these characteristics and the catalytic performance will also be discussed because many variables in each step strongly influence the final catalytic activity, called "chemical memory". All discussion focuses on how to prepare a highly active Cu/ZnO-based catalyst for methanol synthesis. Furthermore, the preparation strategy we deliver here would be utilized for designing other coprecipitation-derived supported metal or metal oxide catalysts.

Successful Aging and the Influencing Factors in the Korean Elderly: Focused on Family Support (한국노인의 성공적 노화와 영향을 미치는 요인: 가족지지를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: This research was conducted to examine the successful aging and identify factors influencing successful aging in the Korean elderly. Methods: The subjects were 4,507 elders and data were collected from the 4th Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing in 2012. The data were analyzed using frequencies, weighted percentage, ${\chi}^2$ test, and logistic regression. Results: The results of this study showed that 19.6% of the participants were categorized to successful aging. The domains of the absence of disease and disability and maintaining physical and mental functioning showed a high rate of achievement, while the domain of active engagement with life showed a low rate of achievement compared to others. Successful aging was influenced by gender, age, subjective economic status, subjective health status, and family support, particularly spouse's support. Conclusion: Intervention programs to increase the prevalence of successful aging are required. Especially programs for strengthening spouse's support and enhancing subjective health status are required.

Improved Clay Process for Builder-grade Zeolite Synthesis by Acidic Benification (광산 용출에 의한 Builder급 Zeolite점토 합성법)

  • From leaching of Korean native halloysite with hot sulfuric acid, active species of siliceous aluminosilicate are obtained as residue, which gives the mole ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 10 and substantially removes most acid-soluble impurities. By dissolving the residue in sodium hydroxide at an ambient temperature sodium silicate solution is prepared, this is used for zeolite synthesis as one of starting materials. In order to prepare zeolite Type 4A thereform, addition of a proper aluminum source is made so that the composition of the reactant materials may be of the following mole ratios : Na2O/SiO2=1.2-1.5, SiO2/Al2O3=1.8-2.0 and H2O/Na2O=34-45 By careful control of ageing time and temperature, subsequent crystal growth is induced into microfine zeolite 4A, which gives optimum particle size distributjion being suitable for detergent builder. The zeolite products thus obtained and highly competitive with those from the use of the refined clay in comparison of their calcium exchange capacity, whiteness and particle size distribution. The present method shows a marginal advantage over the existing procedures requiring neitherseparate purification nor calcinating otherwise necessary for the raw clay ores in use.

  • The aging diagnosis method using partial discharge measurement detects discharge signals that critical cause of failure in insulation material operated a long time and can diagnose aging state of insulation materials with an aging analysis algorithm. The HFPD measurement method is a technique to analyze aging state of high voltage insulation materials and detect higher frequency signals than conventional PD measurement method therefore it takes less noise effect and could execute active line measurement. It is possible to analyze main discharge phenomena and obtain access to aging progress occurred in insulation materials through accumulation of HFPD signals during determined interval and expression of fractal dimension using statistical process of accumulated signals. The HFPD signals that occurred in each applied voltages are measured during 180 cycles and accumulated to the same phase of one cycle. These patterns that made by previous method are normalized with logarithm function and than inputted to neural networks. The aging diagnosis of insulation material was possible and the recognition ratio of neural network appeared very high.

Impregnated Active Carbon-Shelf Life Studies and Its Evaluation Against Cyanogen Chloride with and without Canister

  • Samples of active carbon of $1150\;m^2/g$ surface area were impregnated with ammoniacal salts of copper, chromium and silver, with and without triethylenediamine. The samples of impregnated carbon were aged at $50^{\circ}C$, with and without 90% RH (relative humidity), for a little more than one year and chemically evaluated periodically. Initially copper (II) and chromium (VI) reduced very fast in the samples in humid atmosphere to the extent of 30% and 60% respectively in four months. These values were found to be unaffected by the presence of triethylenediamine (TEDA) indicating that the chemical did not retard the reduction process of chromium (VI) and copper (II). However, in the absence of humidity the reduction of the impregnants was significantly less (10-12%, w/w) in four months. It was quite evident; therefore, that the moisture was mainly responsible for the reduction of chromium (VI) and copper (II) species in impregnated carbons. The prolonged ageing of the samples with and without triethylenediamme after four months with and without humid atmosphere showed that the extent of reduction of chromium (VI) was very low, i.e. 5-10% and of copper (II) was 2-25%. Silver is not reduced due to carbon, as it remained unchanged in concentration on storage. The impregnated carbon samples (100 g) without triethylenediamine, which were aged at room temperature for 5 years in absence of humidity and unaged when evaluated against cyanogen chloride (CNCl) at a concentration of 4 mg/L and airflow rate of 30 lpm showed a high degree of protection (80- 110 minutes).

Identification of Anti-Microbial Material Originated from Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino (손바닥 선인장 분말로부터 추출된 항균물질의 특성)

  • In order to discover physiologically active substance, we investigated a powder obtained by processing of Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino trunk. The powder was treated by sulfuric acid and then extracted by several solvents such as methanol, methylene chloride, ethanol etc. Among them, the best antimicrobial activity was showed by methylene chloride extract. To identify materials exhibiting physiological activation, the acid hydrolyzed extract was separated by 7 fractions through preparative silica gel TLC. The effective fraction exhibiting the best broad antimicrobial activity was identified, named as MBT-01108. From structural analysis of the products extracted to acid hydrolysis, a compound exhibiting the antimicrobial activities is identified to levulinic acid. Levulinic acid isolated from Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino may be applicable as a natural preservative of food or cosmetic and for prevention of bacterial diseases, an ingredient of acne, ageing and whitening cosmetics and an antimicrobial agent.
