  • The arching effect of the active earth pressure acting on an excavation wall subjected to close excavation reduces lateral earth pressure acting on excavation wall. In this paper, the arching effect was estimated for varying width to excavation depth ratio and wall friction angle by analytical and numerical methods verified with centrifuge test results. The arching effect is significant when the width to excavation depth ratio and wall friction angle is decreased and increased, respectively. The analytical solution derived from the classical arching theory suggested by Handy(1985) shows good agreement with the numerical solution than the other solutions.

  • One hundred years have passed since the Western modern play emerged in Korea. Meanwhile, the numerous actors have appeared and disappeared as well, but leaving the record of their great art of acting is still negligible. For stage performances recorded and restoration of works of art creative process is a very important basis for future generations inherit a world of art. The aim of this study will look back on the life and achievements of the greatest senior actor, Jang Min-ho(1924-2012) died in 2012 and see his acting career and world of art. He was born at the time actors were not valued as an expert yet. Recording a life of an actor itself becomes an opportunity for fundamental reflection for the essence of play and role of actor, and introspecting an actor's life on acting becomes an effect that the actor's unique acting style is delivered to younger generations. By recording the actor's life and life on art, I hope that the contemporaries are able to recognize the value and importance of artists leading the contemporary era with being increased interest.

  • Particle suspension is frequently observed in many natural flows such as in the atmosphere and the ocean as well as in various engineering flows. Recently, airborne micro or nano-scale particles in atmosphere attract much attention from environmental society since small particle cause serious environmental problems in the industrialized areas. Also, the characteristics of such heavy particles' behavior is quite different from its fluid particles because the inertia force and buoyance force acting on the heavy particles are different than those acting on fluid particles. Therefore, our studies is to investigate the characteristics of the behavior of heavy particles considering the inertia effect with or without gravity effect, but do not consider modification of turbulence by the particles, that is one-way interaction. We carried out direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence with particles under the Stokes drag assumption for a spherical particle. These results can be used in the development of a stochastic model for predicting particle's behavior.

  • To keep the ocean environment from pollutions, strict international requirements on the controllability are arisen to the VLCC. Especially in low speed operations near the harbor, the VLCC is often supported by tug to replenish the insufficient rudder force. When water jet is blown to the flapped rudder, the Coanda effect induces a high-lift force by delaying stall and re-enforcing circulation in a large angle of attack (Lachmann 1961, Ahn 2003). Based on numerous research efforts, the rudder system supported by the Coanda effect was devised and its performances were evaluated in the towing tank for a large VLCC model. Hydrodynamic forces acting on the rudder system were measured with a water jet blowing on the rudder surface and compared with those acting on a conventional rudder. The effectiveness of the new rudder system was proven through an experimental evaluation.

  • It is well known that the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wall affect ship manoeuvring motion. This paper deals with the interaction effect acting on a ship navigating closely in the proximity of bank wail. In this paper, the calculation method based on the slender body theory for estimation of the hydrodynamic interaction forces between ship and bank wail is applied. The hydrodynamic interaction forces acting on a ship during passing through the proximity of the bank wail are predicted to evaluate an influence of these interaction forces on ship manoeuvrability. The calculation method used in this paper will be useful for prediction of ship manoeuvrability at the initial stage of design, for automatic control system of ship in confined waterways, for discussion of marine traffic control system and for construction of harbour.
