  • Recently, more attention has been paid to the geomorphological changes in the Nakdong River Estuary, because those changes are caused by artificial activities including weirs, reclamation and construction. In order to analyze quantitatively the recent geomorphological variability in the Nakdong River Estuary, we surveyed the depth and elevation of submarine topography near Jinwoodo and Sinjado from March 2007 to February 2012. A statistical method (based on Digital Shoreline Analysis System) and an Empirical Orthogonal Functions method were used to evaluate the morphological changes. According to the statistical variables (DCE, NDC, EPR, LRR), the highest amount and rate of accumulation were recorded around the Gadeokdo whereas the greatest amount of erosion appeared around the coast off the eastern part of Sinjado. In particular, a dynamic variation of morphology was clearly observed in the vicinity of the sub-tidal channel located between Jinwoodo and Sinjado, which seems to be attributable to channel migration. As a result of the EOF method, the first mode (48.7%) is most closely related to the pattern of morphological variability that might be associated with the westerly movement of sediment by longshore current. The spatial variability of the second mode (16.6%) was high in the shoreface of Sinjado, showing a 4-year periodicity of temporal variability. The strong correlation (coefficient 0.73) between the time coefficient and suspended sediment discharge from Nakdong River emphasizes the role of sediment discharge to deposition in this area. The spatial variability of the third mode (11.3%) was distributed mainly around the coast off the eastern part of Sinjado, which is related to the movement of the coastline of Sinjado. Based on the last 5 year's data, our results suggest that the study area is characterized on the whole by a depositional pattern, but the extent of sedimentation is different locally.

  • As an effort to develop an alternative transportation fuel, the production of methanol from methane gas was studied using the resting cells of an obligatory methanotroph, Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b. The reaction was carried out in high concentration phosphate buffer solutions with the flask-grown cells containing the exclusively cytoplasmic methane monooxygenase (sMMO) activity. The methanol accumulation rate was observed to be 79nmo1/mg·min during the initial 4.5hr. Phosphate-dependent inhibition was found for both sMMO and methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) activities, and the inhibition constants were 185mM and 42mM, respectively. The inhibition mode was noncompetitive. Methanol was found to be very inhibitory to the sMMO activity and the inhibition constant (noncompetitive) was 21mM when propylene was used as substrate. The sMO activity in the resting cells was declined very fast and the rate became very high during the methanol production. These results indicate that the use of M. trichosporium OB3b as a biocatalyst for the methanol production is heavily dependent on the stable maintenance of the whole-cell SMO activity as well as the effective alleviation of product inhibition.

  • We designed and fabricated a highly sensitive magnetotransistor which employes the emitter region as a Hall plate for inducing Hall voltage across the emitter. The Hall voltage modulates the emitter basic junction bias on both sides of the emitter so that a large collector current difference is resulted. The specially designed $p^+$ ring around the emitter enhances accumulation of drifted electrons in the emitter and thus the Hall voltage. A relative sensitivity of 240/tesla is measured by operating the device in the saturation mode.

  • A conducting polymer, poly 3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) is characterized with the metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) measurement method and the high frequency planar circuit method. From the MIS measurement method, the relative dielectric constant of the P3HT film is estimated to be 4.4. For the high frequency planar circuit method, a coplanar waveguide is fabricated on the P3HT film. When applying +20 V to the CPW on P3HT film, the P3HT film is in accumulation mode and becomes lossy. The CPW on P3HT film is 1.5 dB lossier than the CPW on $SiO_2$ film without P3HT film at 50 GHz.

  • As an intracellular degradation system, autophagy is an essential and defensive cellular program required for cell survival and cellular metabolic homeostasis in response to various stresses, such as nutrient deprivation and the accumulation of damaged organelles. In general, autophagy flux consists of four steps: (1) initiation (formation of phagophore), (2) maturation and completion of autophagosome, (3) fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes (formation of autolysosome), and (4) degradation of intravesicular components within autolysosomes. The number of genes and reagents that modulate autophagy is increasing. Investigation of their effect on autophagy flux is critical to understanding the roles of autophagy in many physiological and pathological processes. In this review, we summarize and discuss ways to analyze autophagy flux quantitatively and qualitatively with the use of imaging tools. The suggested imaging method can help estimate whether each modulator is an inhibitor or a promoter of autophagy and elucidate the mode of action of specific genes and reagents on autophagy processes.

  • In order to maximize the RNA accumulation and biomass production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae MTY62, a high-content RNA yeast strain, fed-bach cultures were performed with optimized industrial medium including molasses and corn steep liquor. Among the feeding modes examined, the constant feeding mode resulted in the cell concentration of 35.7 g-DCW/L and the RNA concentration of 5434 ${\mu}g-RNA/mL$, which were about 2-fold increased levels, compared to the results of bach culture. However, the RNA content (153 mg-RNA/g-DCW) in the fed-batch cultures was lower than that in the batch culture (171 mg-RNA/g-DCW).

  • In this study, the griding machine bed was designed and analyzed by using epoxy-granite. Finite element technique was employed to design and analyze the composite bed structure. Von Mises stress and relative displacements between a tool and a workpiece were checked to compare a cast iron bed structure with a composite bed structure. Dynamic features of structures were also studied according to the process of modal analysis through natural frequency and mode shape measurement. Another improved model was also designed using the accumulation of knowledge based on the use of the structural analysis and experiments. Comparing with the cast iron bed structure, the composite bed structure maintains better functions.

  • The drain current of the SB MOSFET was analytically modeled by an equation composed of thermionic emission and tunneling with consideration of the image force lowering. The depletion region electron concentration was used to model the channel electron concentration for the tunneling current. The Schottky barrier width is dependent on the channel electron concentration. The drain current is changed by the gate oxide thickness and Schottky barrier height, but it is hardly changed by the doping concentration. For a GaN SB MOSFET with ITO source and drain electrodes, the calculated threshold voltage was 3.5 V which was similar to the measured value of 3.75 V and the calculated drain current was 1.2 times higher than the measured.

  • Three different structures of GaN MOSFETs with trap distributions, trap levels, and densities were simulated, and its results were analyzed. Two of them are Schottky barrier MOSFETs(SB-MOSFETs): one with a p-type GaN body while the other is in the accumulation mode MOSFET with an undoped GaN body and regrown source/drain. The trap levels, distributions and densities were considered based on the measured or calculated properties. For the SB-MOSFET, the interface trap distribution affected the threshold voltage significantly, but had a relatively small influence on the subthreshold swing, while the bulk trap distribution affects the subthreshold swing more.
