  • Levee line mapping is critical to the protection of environments in river zones, the prevention of river flood and the development of river zones. Use of the remote sensing data such as LiDAR and aerial orthoimage is efficient for river mapping due to their accessibility and higher accuracy in horizontal and vertical direction. Airborne laser scanning (LiDAR) has been used for river zone mapping due to its ability to penetrate shallow water and its high vertical accuracy. Use of image source is also efficient for extraction of features by analysis of its image source. Therefore, aerial orthoimage also have been used for river zone mapping tasks due to its image source and its higher accuracy in horizontal direction. Due to these advantages, in this paper, research on three dimensional levee line mapping is implemented using LiDAR and aerial orthoimage separately. Accuracy measurement is implemented for both extracted lines generated by each data using the ground truths and statistical comparison is implemented between two measurement results. Statistical results show that the generated 3D levee line using LiDAR data has higher accuracy than the generated 3D levee line using aerial orthoimage in horizontal direction and vertical direction.

  • In a traditional customer support environment, mainly call centers or service centers are responsible for receiving inquiries from their customers via telephone calls. Due to the rapid growth of Internet with its widespread acceptance and accessibility, means of communication with customers in the traditional customer support center, such as telephones, letters, and direct-visiting, have been replaced by e-mails and bulletin board systems (BBSs) using the Internet constantly. BBSs are basically question and answer systems, they require some lead time to get answer from administrator. To reduce lead time, BBSs enable remote customers or users to log on and tap into a knowledge database that is generally formatted in the form of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that provide answers and solutions to the common problems. And, many different types of the questions are mixed on the BBS. It is a burden to administrator. To build FAQs and to support BBS adminstrator, a supporting tool which is to categorize questions is helpful. In this research, we suggest an interactive question categorizing methodology which consists of steps to present question using keywords, identifying keywords' affinity, computing similarity among questions, and clustering questions. This methodology allows users to interact iteratively for clear manifestation of ambiguous questions. We also developed a prototype system, IQC (interactive question categorizer) and evaluated its performance using the comparison experiments with other systems. IQC is not a general purposed system, but it produces a good result in a given specific domain.

  • Baekdudaegan Mountain System (BDMS) is a unique and traditional concept in Korea that puts importance on the connectivity of energy when Korean people recognize their mountain system. Two main national organizations that are in charge of managing natural environment in Korea, Korea Forest Service (KFS) and Ministry of Environment (MoE), have been independently investigating the natural resources in protected areas of BDMS. Each organization released its first survey report for the whole protected areas in 2011. In order to provide better understanding of BDMS's natural environment, the results contained in the first reports of KFS and MoE were compared. It was found that KFS contains a wider variety of survey items, though many of the items are overlapped between the reports of KFS and MoE. It was noticeable that the survey results of KFS and MoE were not always matched even for the same or similar items in the identical target areas. The main causes of the different survey results are suggested to be the differences of the details of the survey conditions between KFS and MoE, such as the season of the surveys and the subjectivity of surveyors, and the type of literatures included in the indoor survey. As a result, it is difficult to directly compare the survey results of KFS and MoE, which leads to low usability of the data and low efficiency of the survey processes. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that the sections and methodologies of survey should be clearly set with consideration for the research purposes. The survey data and geographical information should be digitalized and opened to the public for better accessibility to BDMS information. Also, the survey reports should include English summary, thereby the results can be utilized globally for scientific, cultural and political purposes, such as designation of a heritage site.

  • A great number of geological research data have been produced by individually conducted researchers and then personally stored in domestic universities and research institutes. However, it is difficult to share data with other researchers owing to low and limited accessibility. The purpose of this study is to systematically establish metadata for inaccessible data, to manage them collectively and to provide opportunities for utilizing the data to those who require efficient research methods. Approximately 1,000 geological specimens (900 rocks and fossils, 100 thin sections) were gathered, along with their metadata such as high-resolution photographs, classification, name, owner, address, and geographical coordinates of the sample site, to establish their features. Additionally, 3D modeling data for 100 rocks and fossils were generated. On the basis of this study, it is possible for researchers to access and share crucial geological data that have a high potential to be lost and have been neglected in restricted spaces; by avoiding the wasted time, energy, and costs caused by repetitive collection of data, researchers may perform effective research and achieve qualified and competitive research results. Moreover, vulnerable and important geological data in the field can be protected from damage caused by indiscriminate, repetitive collection of specimens that have previously been secured. Through the establishment of additional metadata concerning the diversity of rocks, fossils, and thin sections kept at other universities and research institutes, much more data can be recognized, leading to advanced research results. Furthermore, specialized comparison and analysis of basic mineralogy and petrology knowledge are anticipated, based on the use of the metadata.

  • Parks and green spaces have various functions for improving urban physical and social environments. Urban parks and green space planning have been applied in this study for the purpose of enhancing the urban environment. The most popular method for urban parks and green space planning is incrementing the quantity of parks and green spaces. However, it may not be possible to designate new parks and green spaces in a large city because of the difficulty of obtaining land. This study explores how urban parks and green space planning produces better quality urban environments without having to designate new parks and green spaces. The study evaluates existing parks and green spaces according to the satisfaction of the users. This evaluation could be a useful tool for those planning urban parks and green space systems. The study was performed in Tama Newtown, Japan, within two districts with two distinct characteristics of park systems: concentration and equality arrangement forms. For comparison, on-site questionnaires were used, with 319 residents in the area responding to the study. The data was collected and analyzed, using t-test, factor analysis, and multiple regression methods. The study found there was no difference in satisfaction factors be tween the two districts. However, differences were found within each of the districts, depending on parks and green space components. For example, the quality of green space was the most important factor for the district with a planned concentration arrangement form of parks and green spaces, but, separation of the pedestrian and vehicular systems was the most important factor in the district with a planned equality arrangement form of park system. Factors affecting the satisfaction of parks and green spaces that were common between the two sites were: accessibility, quality of park, quality of green space, and separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffics.

  • In the past, hospitals were planned with a minimum of public space for the sole purpose of treatment. On the other hand, modern hospitals have more public space as the importance of the healing environment increases and are planned taking into consideration the patients, guardians, and medical staff. In addition, the lobby shape is developed from a HALL type and planned as a STREET type or CONCOURSE type, increasing the public area. Unlike past hospitals, which were used as reception, waiting, and procedure spaces, modern hospitals are used as commercial, hobby, and cultural space. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the healing environment of the hospital lobby based on the shape of the plane surface by deducting the elements of general hospitals' healing environment from preceding studies as a framework. The hospital lobby is an important place where many actions occur. Therefore, 3 types of cases were evaluated based on the plane form. As a result of the study, the STREET type showed a better healing environment than the HALL type, but the accessibility, roof garden, and resting place showed similar results. Because the case was based on a large general hospital, which had sufficient planned space, the factor has little to do with the style of the lobby. Among the STREET types, the linear atrium showed a better result in terms of the sense of space and inflow effect of natural lighting than the four-sided atrium because the linear atrium has large open volume ratio. When the lobby plane is the HALL type, a cross section of the courtyard had a large open volume ratio. Therefore, the shape of the cross section is as important as the plane form of the lobby.

  • The object of this research is to explain types and factors of locations and regional linkages of manufacturing firms in rural areas using Eumsung County as a case of rural areas. Eumsung County is now vigorously industrializing owing to the government policy dispersing factories in the Capital region. The results of the survey conducted on industrial firms in Eumsung County through questionnaires reveal that individual sites are dominantly preferred by factory owners in comparison to the designated industrial complexes because the former is cheaper in land price. The main factors of industrial location in Eumsung County are cheap land cost, convenient highway accessibility, and the dispersion policy of the Capital region. In terms of the regional linkage, the proportion of the linkage with other regions is larger than that within the local region in case of purchasing raw materials, but the linkage with other regions is lower than that within the local regions in case of selling products. Also most white collar employees in Eumsung County were revealed to reside in and around the Capital region. In order to develop and maintain industrial firms in rural areas so as to avoid "dependency development," efforts for improving of the linkages between the local firms and expanding of social overhead capital are necessary.necessary.
