This investigation presents a topology formulation to design optimal poroelastic acoustic foams to maximize absorbing ability. For successful formulation, a single set of equations based on Biot's theory is adopted and an appropriate material interpolation strategy is newly developed. Because there was no earlier attempt to solve poroelastic acoustic foam design problems in topology optimization setting, many challenging issues including modeling and interpolation must be addressed. First, the simulation accuracy by a proposed unified model encompassing acoustic air and poroelastic material was checked against analytical and numerical results. Then a material interpolation scheme yielding a distinct acoustic air-poroelastic material distribution was developed. Using the proposed model and interpolation scheme, the topology optimization of a two-dimensional poroelastic acoustic foam for maximizing its absorption coefficient was carried out. Numerical results show that the absorption capacity of an optimized foam layout considerably increases in comparison with a nominal foam layout.

The spot welded sections of automobiles (hat and double hat shaped sections) absorb most of the energy in a front-end collision. The target of this paper is to analyze the energy absorbing capacity of the structure against the front-end collision, and to obtain useful information for designing stage. Changed the spot welded pitches on the flanges, the hat and double hat shaped section members were tested on the axial collapse loads at various impact velocities. It was expected that para-closed sections would show collapse characteristics which be quite different from those of perfectly closed sections. Hat shaped section members were tested at the impact collapse velocities of 4.72m/sec, 6.54m/sec and 7.1m/sec and double hat shaped section members were tested at the impact collapse velocities of 6.54m/sec, 7.1 m/sec and 7.27m/sec.
The W/O emulsion was formed by mixing hydrophobic nonion surfactants of span 80 and tween 60 with kerosine, and by adding sodium silicate aqueous solution. Precipitating the W/O emulsion by sodium bicarbonate resulted in spherical silica particles. Shape and size distribution of silica particles were observed. The particles were spherical and they have narrow size distribution. Particle sizes were 9.29, 7.39 and $5.73\;{\mu}m$ at homogenizer speed of 2500, 3000, and 3500 rpm, respectively. The particle size was decreased by increasing agitation speed due to the formation of emulsion droplet. At fixed agitation speed, absorbed paraffin oil weight were measured and the $SiO_2/Na_2O$ mole ratio effects on particle size were investigated. Particle size was decreased by increasing the mole ratio of $SiO_2/Na_2O$.
We fabricated thermaly evaporated 10 nmNi/(poly)Si films to investigate the energy saving property of silicides formed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) at the temperature of $300{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ for 40 seconds. Moreover, we fabricated $10{\sim}50$ nm-thick ITO/Si films with a rf-sputter as reference films. A four-point tester was used to investigate the sheet resistance. A transmission electron microscope (TEM) and an X-ray diffractometer were used for the determination of cross sectional microstructure and phase changes. A UV-VISNIR and FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared rays spectroscopy) were employed for near-IR and middle-IR absorbance. Through TEM analysis, we confirmed $20{\sim}70nm-thick$ silicide layers formed on the single and polycrystalline silicon substrates. Nickel silicides and ITO films on the single silicon substrates showed almost similar absorbance in near-IR region, while nickel silicides on polycrystalline silicon substrate showed superior absorbance above 850 nm near-IR region to ITO films. Nickel silicide on polycrystalline substrate also showed better absorbance in middle IR region than ITO. Our result implies that nano-thick nickel silicides may have exellent absorbing capacity in near-IR and middle-IR region.
Recently high and persistent spontaneous buildup of a surface potential (SP) upon vacuum deposition of tris (8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (III) ($Alq_3$), which is widely used for organic light emitting devices. The removal of the giant surface potential by visible light irradiation has also been reported. In this study, we coated $Alq_3$ on the FTO substrate and raise the capacity for absorbing sun light. The $Alq_3$ which is green light emitting diode emits light at wavelengths between 500 and 550nm. If we apply one's FTO/$Alq_3$ substrate in one's DSSC, we could get higher energy conversion efficiency because the N719 dye that we used for fabricating the DSSC emits light just at near 540nm. The energy conversion efficiency of approximately 4.8 % at the condition of irradiation of AM 1.5 (100 mW/$cm^2$) simulated sunlight, and the $J_{sc}$ is 12.0 mA/$cm^2$, $V_{oc}$ is 0.71 V, FF is 0.56, respectively.
The front-end side members of automobiles, such as the hat-shaped section member, absorb most of the energy during the front-end collision. The side members absorb more energy in collision if they have higher strength and stiffness, and stable folding capacity (local buckling). Using the above characteristics on energy absorption, vehicle should be designed light-weight to improve fuel combustion ratio and reduce exhaust gas. Because of their specific strength and stiffness, CFRP are currently being considered for many structural (aerospace vehicle, automobiles, trains and ships) applications due to their potential for reducing structural weight. Although CFRP members exhibit collapse modes that are significantly different from the collapse modes of metallic materials, numerous studies have shown that CFRP members can be efficient energy absorbing materials. In this study, the CFRP side members were manufactured using a uni-directional prepreg sheet of carbon/Epoxy and axial static collapse tests were performed for the members. The collapse mode and the energy absorption capability of the members were analyzed under the static load.
The battery capacity of electric/hybrid vehicle is much larger than present automobile. For that reason, the connector of Green Car should be designed to transmit the high-electric voltage. In addition, the electromagnetic wave should be shielded to protect communication and signal circuits. In this study, shielding performance of the connector was analyzed through electromagnetic shield analysis, and a connector of Green Car was designed using thermoelectrical analysis, which is capable of transmitting the high-electric power. In the design of connector structure, the improved stability and workability was considered.
A type of hybrid core made up of thin-walled square carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) honeycomb and Polymethacrylimide (PMI) foam fillers was proposed and prepared. Numerical model of the core under quasi static compression was established and validated by corresponding experimental results. The compressive properties of the core with different configurations were analyzed through numerical simulations. The effect of the geometrical parameters and foam fillers on the compressive response and energy absorption of the core were analyzed. The results show that the PMI foam fillers can significantly improve the compressive strength and energy absorption capacity of the square CFRP honeycomb. The geometrical parameters have marked effects on the compressive properties of the core. The research can give a reference for the application of PMI foam materials in energy absorbing structures and guide the design and optimization of lightweight and energy efficient cores of sandwiches.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mechanical properties of 6061 Al foams, which were fabricated by P/M and multi-step induction heating method, and to build the database, which is needed for computer aided modeling or foam components design. Aluminium foams, consisting of solid aluminium and large quantities of porosities, is widely used in automotive, aerospace, naval as well as functional applications because of its high stiffness at very low density, high impact energy absorption, heat and fire resistance, and greater thermal stability than any organic material. In this study, 6061 Al foams were fabricated for variation of fraction of porosities (%) according to porosities (%)-final heating temperature ( $T_{a3}$) curves. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength, energy absorption capacity, and efficiency were investigated to evaluate the feasibility of foams as crash energy absorbing components. Moreover, effect of the surface skin thickness on plateau stress and strain sensitivity of the 6061 Al foams with low porosities (%) were studied.d.
