A journal bearing is used in a hydrodynamic lubrication state, but it becomes a boundary lubrication state that asperity of a contact part touch each other when pressure is too high and an enough oil film is not formed by viscosity change due to lubricating oil temperature. At this time, abrasion due to contact between a journal and a bearing is unavoidable, and scuffing damage that the journal adheres to the bearing occurs if the process is repeated. Damage of the journal bearing is an important problem because it gives huge damage to a machine and can generate large accidents such as economic loss and human life damage. In this study, method for using the pull-up resistor concept was introduced as the monitoring technology. This monitoring system is important to enhance reliability of the engine.

Liquid butadiene rubber (LqBR) is used as a processing aid and plays a vital role in the manufacture of high-performance tire tread compounds. In this study, center-functionalized LqBR (C-LqBR) was polymerized with different vinyl content via anionic polymerization. The effects of the vinyl content on the properties of the compounds were investigated by partially replacing the treated distillate aromatic extract (TDAE) oil with C-LqBR in silica-filled rubber compounds. C-LqBR compounds showed a low Payne effect and Mooney viscosity regardless of the vinyl content, because of improved silica dispersion due to the ethoxysilyl group. As the vinyl content of C-LqBR increased, the optimum cure time (t90) increased owing to a decrease in the number of allylic hydrogen. Moreover, the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the compound increased, and snow traction and abrasion resistance performance decreased, whereas wet grip improved. The energy loss characteristics revealed that the hysteresis attributed to the free chain ends of C-LqBR was dominant.
Emulsion styrene-butadiene rubber silica wet masterbatch (ESBR silica WMB) technology was studied to develop highly filled and highly dispersed silica compounds, involving the preparation of a composite by co-coagulating the modified silica and the rubber latex in a liquid phase. Previous studies have shown that when manufacturing ESBR silica WMB/Butadiene silica dry masterbatch (BR silica DMB) blend compounds, preparing BR silica dry masterbatch and mixing it with ESBR silica WMB gave excellent results. However, WMB still has the problem of lower crosslink density due to residual surfactants. Therefore, in this study, tetrabenzylthiuram disulfide (TBzTD) was added instead of diphenyl guanidine (DPG) in the ESBR silica WMB/BR silica DMB blend compounds and sulfur/CBS contents were increased to evaluate their cure characteristics, crosslink densities, mechanical properties, and dynamic viscoelastic properties. TBzTD was found to be more effective in increasing the crosslink density and to produce superior properties compared to DPG. In addition, with increasing sulfur/CBS contents, mechanical properties and rolling resistance were enhanced due to high crosslink density, but the abrasion resistance was not significantly changed because of the toughness.
Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) is a metastable form of amorphous carbon that have superior material properties such as high mechanical hardness, chemical inertness, abrasion resistance, and biocompatibility. Furthermore, its material properties can be tuned by additional doping such as nitrogen or boron. However, either pure DLC or doped DLC show poor adhesion property that makes it difficult to apply contact processing technique. Therefore we propose ultrafast laser micromachining which is non-contact precision process without mechanical degradation. In this study, we developed precision machining process of DLC thin film using an ultrafast laser by investigating the process window in terms of laser fluence and laser wavelength. We have also demonstrated various patterns on the film without generating any microcracks and debris.

Quartz (SiO2) has high abrasion and heat resistances and excellent chemical and mechanical properties; therefore, it is used in various industries, such as machinery, chemistry, optics, and medicine. Quartz is a high-hardness and brittle material and is classified as the topmost difficult-to-cut material, which is because of the cracking or chipping at the edge during processing. Corner wear, such as cracks and chippings that occur during cutting, is a major cause for the deterioration in the machining quality. Therefore, many researchers are investigating various techniques to process quartz effectively. However, owing to the mechanical properties of quartz, most studies have been conducted on grinding, micromachining, and microdrilling. Few studies have been conducted on quartz processing. The purpose of this study was to analyze the machining characteristics according to the machining factors during the slot machining of quartz using a cubic boron nitride (CBN) tool and to select the optimal machining conditions using the Taguchi method. The machining experiment was performed considering three process variables: the spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. The cutting force and surface roughness were analyzed according to the processing conditions.
A large amount of particles on the roads is produced by friction between the vehicles and the road surface and by inflow from outside. The type of these particles affects the abrasion behavior of tire tread. In this study, road dust collected at a bus stop was separated by size, and the particles with sizes of 106-212 mm were analyzed. The particles were separated by density using NaI and NaBr aqueous solutions with densities in the range of 1.10-1.80 g/cm3 with the 0.10 g/cm3 interval. In the road dust sample, the following particle types were found: tire-road wear particles (TRWPs), asphalt pavement wear particles (APWPs), plant-related particles (PRPs), road paint wear particles (RPWPs), and plastic particles (PPs). The densities of TRWPs, APWPs, PRPs, and RPWPs were 1.20-1.80, >1.60, >1.10, and >1.40 g/cm3, respectively, while PPs were found in all density ranges. Additionally, many small mineral particles were observed on the particles. Order of the relative content of the particles was PRP > TRWP > APWP ~ RPWP > PP. APWPs that were stuck to TRWP could be removed by chloroform treatment. The shapes of the particles were characterized using their magnified images.
Long-termly used in water supply, an underground concrete pipe is easily subjected to the coupled action of pressure loading and flowing water, which can cause the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, resulting in its premature failure and lifetime reduction. Based on the leaching characteristics and damage mechanism of concrete pipe, this paper proposes a coupled chemo-mechanical damage and failure model of underground concrete pipe for water supply, including a calcium leaching model, mechanical damage equation and a failure criterion. By using the model, a numerical simulation is performed to analyze the failure process of underground concrete pipe, such as the time-varying calcium concentration in concrete, the thickness variation of pipe wall, the evolution of chemo-mechanical damage, the distribution of concrete stress on the pipe and the lifetime of the pipe. Results show that, the failure of the pipe is a coupled chemo-mechanical damage process companied with calcium leaching. During its damage and failure, the concentrations of calcium phase in concrete decrease obviously with the time, and it can cause an increase in the chemo-mechanical damage of the pipe, while the leaching and abrasion induced by flowing water can lead to the boundary movement and wall thickness reduction of the pipe, and it results in the stress redistribution on the pipe section, a premature failure and lifetime reduction of the pipe.

The main cause of scattering dust generated by transportation equipment such as automobiles was largely due to exhaust gas from internal combustion engines in the past, but it was generally recognized that non-exhaust causes such as abrasion of the tires or brake pads were low. Accordingly, scattering dust generated by exhaust gas has consistently existed in many studies, such as technological progress and related regulations, but research on non-exhaust is relatively insignificant, and the need for research on scattering dust generated by non-exhaust is emerging. In this study, a dust collector that can be easily mounted on a caliper to collect scattering dust generated by pad wear during the brake operation of an automobile was manufactured. In this study, we developed a dust collector that is easy to mount on calipers to collect scattering dust caused by pad wear during brake operation of automobiles. According to the installation of the manufactured dust collector, the performance of scattering dust by brake operation and the temperature change characteristics of calipers according to the structure of the dust collector were evaluated.
This study was conducted to investigate particle attrition characteristics in a gas desulfurization using zinc titanate sorbent in a 0.035 m i.d. by 1.34 m height gas fluidized bed reactor. Gas jetting from the distributor and bubbling in the gas fluidized bed were found to be the main causes of particle attrition. The experiment was carried out under a slow attrition rate condition to compare the performance of the batch reactor to that of a continuous reactor. The attrition index (AI) and corrected attrition index (CAI) were measured at various the gas velocity, temperature, pressure, and bed weight, in the gas fluidized bed, during the dexulfurization process. The AI (5) and CAI (5) decreased as the bed weight increased. Particle destruction occurred when the particles started to experience physical fatigue under specific impacts over several iterations. AI (5) and CAI (5) also increased as relative humidity, gas velocity and pressure increased, and as temperature decreased. Particle attrition was mainly affected by gas jetting from the distributor, and abrasion resulted in smaller particles than fragmentation did.
To compare the wear resistance of four kinds of commercial acrylic resin teeth [SR-Orthosit PosterioresR(Ivoclar Co., Liechtenstein), Endura PosteriorR(Shofu Inc. Japan), trubyte IPN teethR(Dentsply International Inc., York,), Trubyte BiotoneR(dentsply Inermational Inc. Brazil) by means of the toothbrush abrasion method, the artificial resin teeth were embedded in epoxy resin with the occlusal surfaces aligned in one plane for a total of 40 blocks. There after, each lock was mounted in the arm of the toothbrush abrasion machine(K 236, Japan). Wear measurements were made on the three preconditioned states. Those were as follows : no treatment specimens, thermocycled specimens, and thermocycled specimens which were immeresed applied load of 400g during the buring the brushing cycle. At the end of the 30,000-stroke cycle, each specimen was removed, and weighed. The microhardness of four kinds of commercial resin teeth were determined by means of microhardness tester. Microhardness tests were performed on te no treatment specimens, thermocycled specimens, and thermocycled specimens with immersion in the denture cleansing solution. Finally, the comparison of thermal properties were perfomed using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC-1500). The following results were obtained : 1. In the case of no treatment teeth, the wear amount of endura Posterior(EN) was the greatest among the others(p<0.01), and the wear amount of three kinds of artificial resin teeth was increased in the order of Trubyte IPN teeth(IN), Trubyte Biotone(BN), SR-Orthosit Posteriores(SN) but there was no statistic significance(p>0.01). 2. The wear amount of Trubyte IPN teeth(IT) and Trubyte Biotone(BT), was increased due to thermocycling effect, but that of Endura Posteriores(ET) was decreased conversely(p<0.01). 3. Except for the SR-Orthosit Posteriores(STC), the wear amount of three kinds of artificial resing teeth(that is, ETC, ITC, BTC) was increased due to denture cleansing solution$(Cledent^R)$, but there was no statistic significance(p>0.01). But the wear amount of the SR-Orthosit Posteriores(STC) was the greatest among the others(p<0.01). 4. The wear amount of toothbrush was the greatest in case of contact with occlusal surface of SROrthosit Posteriores resin teeth(p<0.01). 5. the microhardness values(KHN) of the SR-Orthosit Posteriores was the highest among the experimental artificial resin teeth(p<0.01). 6. There was no relationship between microhardness valuse(KHN) and wear amount of four kinds of experimental artificial resin teeth(p<0.01). 7. The differential canning calorimetric property of four kinds of artificial resin teeth did not show endothermal or exothermal peak in the range of $100^{\circ}C$
