  • In order to investigate the effect of second phase on $Al_2O_3$ matrix, SiC particles were dispersed in $Al_2O_3$ matrix as a second phase over the content range of 5 vol.% to 20 vol.%. To this mixture, $Y_2O_3$ or $TiO_2$ powders were added as a sintering additive before isostatically pressing and pressurelessly sintering at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min in $N_2$ atmosphere. With increasing SiC content, relative densities of composites were decreased but mechanical properties of composites were improvjed. In the case of adding $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering additive, maximum values of flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness were 525 MPa, 17.1 GPa, 4.1 MPa.m1/2 respectively. In the case of adding X$TiO_2$ as a sintering additive, maximum values of flexural strength, hardness were 285 MPa, 12.1 GPa respectively. Improved mechanical properties were found to be the results of grain growth control of $Al_2O_3$ matrix and crack deflection by the second phase SiC particles.

  • A survey was carried out on the cold-induced sterility of paddy rice in 1988 in the alpine area of Kangweon province when cold spell occurred during late July to early August, During this period minimum temperature as low as 8.5$^{\circ}C$ and 5.7$^{\circ}C$ was recorded at Dunnae and Jinbu, respectively. The rice cultivars, which encountered this cold spe]J at meiotic stage of microspore, were damaged by sterility in most alpine areas of higher than 300m in altitude. To secure spilkelet fertility higher than 80% it was estimated that the minimum and average air temperature accumulated during 13 days of meiotic stage should be higher than 2$25^{\circ}C$ and 285$^{\circ}C$, respectively and/or the duration of lower than 17$^{\circ}C$ in minimum temperature should not exceed fivedays during that period.

  • The purpose of this study was to demonstrate immune-activities by heat therapy. To exam, furthermore, the immune effect is investigated from the healthy volunteer(male:15, female:15) by monitoring changes of immune substances such as complements(C1q, C3, and C4), a comparative study with warm water immersion($40.8{\pm}0.3^{\circ}C$) and infrared(250W) was carried out. The plasma analysis showed that the percentage of C1q, C3, and C4 was decreased in warm water immersion-stimulated group, but not in infrared-applied group, compared with control group from healthy volunteer. Therefore, these results suggest that the thermo-stimulation improved immune activity and inhibited complement-related inflammation through the warm water immersion-dependent classical pathway.

  • This paper presents the design and the application of a new self-powered hybrid electromagnetic damper that can harvest energy while mitigating the vibration of a structure. The damper is able to switch between an energy harvesting passive mode and a semi-active mode depending on the amount of energy harvested and stored in the battery. The energy harvested in the passive mode resulting from the suppression of vibration is employed to power up the monitoring and electronic components necessary for the semi-active control. This provides a hybrid control capability that is autonomous in terms of its power requirement. The proposed hybrid circuit design provides two possible options for the semi-active control: without energy harvesting and with energy harvesting. The device mechanism and the circuitry that can drive this self-powered electromagnetic damper are described in this paper. The parameters that determine the device feasible force-velocity region are identified and discussed. The effectiveness of this hybrid damper is evaluated through a numerical simulation study on vibration mitigation of a bridge stay cable under wind excitation. It is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid design outperforms the passive case without external power supply. It is also shown that a broader force range, facilitated by decoupled passive and semi-active modes, can improve the vibration performance of the cable.

  • This paper describes the development and calibration of a structural monitoring system installed in a 80 meters high steel wind tower supporting a 2.1 MW turbine Wind Class III IEC2a erected in the central part of Portugal. The several signals are measured at four different levels and include accelerations, strains on the tower wall and inside the connection bolts, inclinations and temperature. In order to correlate measurements with the wind velocity and direction and with the turbine operational parameters the corresponding signals are obtained directly from the turbine own monitoring system and are incorporated in the developed system. Results from the system calibration, the structural identification and the initial period of data acquisition are presented in this paper.

  • Novel unsaturated polyester composites with PAN-based nanofiber, stabilized PAN nanofiber, and carbonized nanofiber webs have been fabricated, respectively, and the effects of the nanofiber web content on their electrical resistivity, the thermal stability, dynamic storage modulus, and fracture surfaces were studied. The result demonstrated that the introduction of just one single layer (which is corresponding to 2 wt.%) of the carbonized nanofiber web to unsaturated polyester resin (UPE) could contribute to reducing markedly the electrical resistivity of the resin reflecting the percolation threshold, to improving the storage modulus, and to increasing the thermal stability above $350^{\circ}C$. The effect on decreasing the resistivity and increasing the modulus was the greatest at the carbonized PAN nanofiber web content of 8 wt.%, particularly showing that the storage modulus was increased about 257~283% in the measuring temperature range of $-25^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$. The result also exhibited that the carbonized PAN nanofibers were distributed uniformly and compactly in the unsaturated polyester, connecting the matrix three-dimensionally through the thickness direction of each specimen. It seemed that such the fiber distribution played a role in reducing the electrical resistivity as well as in improving the dynamic storage modulus.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of Chitosan on the nickel poisoning in rats. In the study, 150 male Sprague-Dawley were used. The experimental groups were divided into four: A (30 mg/L nickel), B (30 mg/L nickel+0.2% Chitin, Chitosan and Dithiocarbamate Chitosan), C (30 mg/L nickel+0.4% Chitin, Chitosan and Dithiocarbamate Chitosan), D (30 mg/L nickel+0.8%Chitin, Chitosan and Dithiocarbamate Chitosan). The results were as flows; 1. The nickel concentration in the livers of the control group (A) was $0.153{\sim}0.186\;mg/kg$ but the nickel concentration in the livers of the experimental decreased during the experimental period (P<0.05). 2. Metallothionenin levels in rat liver were $2.77{\sim}3.25\;ug/g$ wet,wt in control group (A), but were $2.89{\sim}3.51\;ug/g$ wet,wt (B), $2.97{\sim}3.62\;ug/g$ wet,wt (C), $2.68{\sim}3.68\;ug/g$ wet,wt (D). Respectively in the experimental groups. The experimental groups were inclined to increase compare to the control group (P<0.05). In conclusion, this study revealed a preventive effect of Chitin, Chitosan and Dithiocarbamate Chitosan against nickel toxicity.

  • Let E be a uniformly convex Banach space with a uniformly G$\hat{a}teaux differentiable norm, C a nonempty closed convex subset of $E, T : C \to E$ a nonexpansive mapping, and Q a sunny nonexpansive retraction of E onto C. For $u \in C$ and $t \in (0,1)$, let $x_t$ be a unique fixed point of a contraction $R_t : C \to C$, defined by $R_tx = Q(tTx + (1-t)u), x \in C$. It is proved that if ${x_t}$ is bounded, then the strong $lim_{t\to1}x_t$ exists and belongs to the fixed point set of T. Furthermore, the strong convergence of ${x_t}$ in a reflexive and strictly convex Banach space with a uniformly G$\hat{a}$teaux differentiable norm is also given in case that the fixed point set of T is nonempty.
