Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis on the Paretic and Non-paretic Regions of Severe and Mild Hemiplegic Stroke Patients

  • For many stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation therapy, there is a need for indicator for evaluating the body function in paretic and non-paretic regions of stroke patients quantitatively. In this paper, the function of muscles and cells in paretic and non-paretic regions of severe and mild hemiplegic stroke patients was evaluated using multi-channel bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy. The paretic and non-paretic regions of severe and mild stroke patients were quantitatively assessed by using bioelectrical impedance parameters such as prediction marker (PM), phase angle (${\theta}$), characteristic frequency ($f_c$), and bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA). The mean values of impedance vector were significantly discriminated in all comparisons (severe-paretic, severe-non-paretic, mild-paretic, and mild-non-paretic). The bioelectrical impedance parameters were proved to be a very valuable tool for quantitatively evaluating the paretic and non-paretic regions of hemiplegic stroke patients.

Lithium intercalation into a plasma-enhanced-chemical-vapour-deposited carbon film electrode

  • Electrochemical lithium intercalation into a PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposited) carbon film electrode was investigated in 1 M $LiPF_6-EC$ (ethylene carbonate) and DEC (diethyl carbonate) solution during lithium intercalation and deintercalation, by using cyclic voltammetry supplemented with ac-impedance spectroscopy. The size of the graphitic crystallite in the a- and c-axis directions obtained from the carbon film electrode was much smaller than those of the graphite one, indicating less-developed crystalline structure with hydrogen bonded to carbon, from the results of AES (Auger electron spectroscopy), powder XRD (X-ray diffraction) method, and FTIR(Fourier transform infra-red) spectroscopy. It was shown from the cyclic voltammograms and ac-impedance spectra of carbon film electrode that a threshold overpotential was needed to overcome an activation barrier to entrance of lithium into the carbon film electrode, such as the poor crystalline structure of the carbon film electrode showing disordered carbon and the presence of residual hydrogen in its structure. The experimental results were discussed in terms of the effect of host carbon structure on the lithium intercalation capability.

SiO2 첨가가 AIN 세라믹스의 고온 비저항에 미치는 영향 (Effects of SiO2 on the High Temperature Resistivities of AIN Ceramics)

  • The effects of $SiO_2$ impurity on the high temperature resistivities of AIN ceramics have been investigated. When $SiO_2$ was added into 1 wt% $Y_2O_3$-doped AIN, DC resistivities have decreased and electrode polarizations disappeared. Impedance spectroscopy showed two semi-circles at $600^{\circ}C$, which were attributed to grain and grain boundary, respectively. $SiO_2$ doping had more significant effects on the grain resistivity than grain boundary resistivity, implying that doped Si acted as a donor in AIN lattice. In addition, voltage dependency of DC resistivity was observed, which might be related to dependency of size of grain boundary semi-circle on the bias voltage in impedance spectroscopy.

건습환경중 순 Mg박막의 EIS부식 모니터링 특성 관찰 (Properties Investigation of Corrosion Monitoring for Pure Mg Thin Films under Wet-Dry Cyclic Conditions by Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Method)

  • Magnesium thin films were prepared on cold-rolled steel substrates by RF(Radio Frequency) magnetron sputtering technique.$^{1)}$ The crystal orientation and monitoring of the deposited films were investigated by using XRD(X-ray Diffraction) and EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy), respectively. The corrosion rates of Mg thin films deposited with different argon gas pressure and substrate bias voltage were monitored by AC impedance method under a cyclic wet-dry condition, which was conducted by exposure to alternate conditions of 1h immersion in 3%NaCl solution and 5h drying at 60% RH and 25$^{\circ}C$. The result of corrosion rate of Mg thin films deposited at various Ar gas pressures and substrate bias voltage under wet-dry cyclic exposure in chloride-containing solutions was showed the following conclusions. At the region I during the onset of the wet cycle, corrosion rate showed relatively low value. The increase in the Corrosion rate of region II is due to the increase in the chloride concentration. Corrosion rate of region III during the onset of the cycle zero and salt crystals remain on the metal surface.$^{2)}$

GNP법을 이용한 고체산화물 연료전지의 공기극용 La0.75Sr0.25FeO3의 제조 및 특성 (Synthesis and Characterization of La0.75Sr0.25FeO3 Used as Cathode Materials for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell by GNP Method)

  • Glycine Nitrate Process(GNP)를 이용하여 $La_{0.75}Sr_{0.25}FeO_3$를 합성하였다. 이때, GNP의 글리신의 함량은 화학양론식으로 계산하여 3.17mol을 첨가하였다. ICP-AES분석으로 각각의 조성 함량을 조사하고, XRD, SEM분석으로 합성된 분말의 결정성과 입자크기를 분석하였다. 이렇게 분석한 분말은 일축가압 성형으로 펠렛을 제조하였으며, 이 시편은 $1200^{\circ}C$에서 소결하였다. 소결된 시편은 아르키메데스 법을 이용하여 소결밀도를 측정히였다. 전기화학적 성능을 평가하기 위해 AC impedance spectroscopy로 측정하였으며, GNP 법으로 합성된 LSF가 기존의 LSM 보다 낮은 Ohmic resistance및 Polarization resistance를 보임을 확인하였다. 또한 합성된 LSF를 양극으로 사용하여 연료극 지지체식 고체산화물 연료전지의 단위전지를 제작하였으며, 그 성능은 $750^{\circ}C$에서 $342mW/cm^2(0.7V,\;488mA/cm^2)$을 나타내었다. 마지막으로 임피던스 분석에 의하여 단위전지의 전기화학적 분극저항을 평가하였다.

Electrochemical Evaluation of Si-Incorporated Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) Coatings Deposited on STS 316L and Ti Alloy for Biomedical Applications

  • DLC coatings have been deposited onto substrate of STS 316L and Ti alloy using r.f. PACVD (plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition) with a mixture of $C_{6}H_{6}$ and $SiH_{4}$ as the process gases. Corrosion performance of DLC coatings was investigated by electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and surface analysis (scanning electron microscopy). The electrolyte used in this test was a 0.89% NaCl solution of pH 7.4 at temperature $37^{\circ}C$. The porosity and protective efficiency of DLC coatings were obtained using potentiodynamic polarization test. Moreover, the delamination area and volume fraction of water uptake of DLC coatings as a function of immersion time were calculated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This study provides the reliable and quantitative data for assessment of the effect of substrate on corrosion performance of Si-DLC coatings. The results showed that Si-DLC coating on Ti alloy could improve corrosion resistance more than that on STS 316L in the simulated body fluid environment. This could be attributed to the formation of a dense and low-porosity coating, which impedes the penetration of water and ions.

  • The molten carbonate fuel cell has conspicuous feature and high potential in being used as an energy converter of various fuel to electricity and heat. However, the MCFC which use strongly corrosive molten carbonate at 650$^{\circ}C$ have many problem. Systematic investigation on corrosion behavior of Fe/20Cr/Ti alloys has been done in (62+38)mol% (Li+K)CO$_3$ melt at 923K by using steady state polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy method. And, The research and development for the solid oxide fuel cell have been promoted rapidly and extensively in recent years, because of their high efficiency and future potential. Therefore this paper describes the manufacturing method and characteristics of anode electrode for SOFC, by the way, Ni-YSZ materials are used as anode of SOFC widely. So in this experiments, we investigated the optimum content of Ni, by the impedance characteristics, overvoltage. As a result, the performance of Ni-YSZ anode(47vo1%) was bettor excellent than the others.

EIS를 활용한 철근 부식에 따른 콘크리트 손상 모니터링 (Monitoring of Concrete Deterioration Caused by Steel Corrosion using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS))

  • 이 연구에서는 전기화학적 임피던스분광법(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, EIS)을 활용하여 콘크리트 속 철근 부식의 개시, 전파 및 이로 인한 콘크리트의 손상을 관찰하기 위한 실험을 수행하였다. 먼저, 직경 25mm, 높이 70mm 원주형 콘크리트 실험체 중심에 지름 5mm의 탄소강봉을 매입한 실험체를 제작하였다. 실험체에 사용된 콘크리트는 물-시멘트 비 0.4, 0.5, 0.6을 갖는 세 가지 배합을 제작하였다. 촉진부식시험을 수행하여 위하여 철근 콘크리트 실험체는 0.5M NaCl 수용액에 침지한 후 0C, 13C, 65C, 130C의 네 가지 수준의 전하량을 인가하였다. 이 연구에서는 부식촉진 및 이 과정에서 EIS의 주기적 모니터링을 자동화하여 실험의 효율을 향상시켰다. 이 연구의 실험 결과를 통하여 EIS 주요 특성인자를 활용하여 콘크리트 속 철근의 부식상태를 효과적으로 평가할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 전하이동저항(Rc)값은 전하인가량이 0C에서 13C로 증가함에 따라 급격히 감소하여 대략 10kΩcm2 값을 나타내었다. 하지만 부식개시 이후 전하인가량을 13C에서 130C로 증가하였을 때 Rc값의 민감도는 현저히 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. 한편 이중층용량값(Cdl)값은 전하인가량이 0C에서 130C로 증가함에 따라 대략 50×10-6μF/cm2 에서 250×10-6μF/cm2 수준으로 선형비례관계를 보였다. 이러한 결과는 Cdl 모니터링을 통하여 부식물질에 팽창에 따라 유발된 콘크리트 내부 손상의 진전을 효과적으로 평가할 수 있음을 보여준다. 이 연구의 결과는 EIS를 활용하여 콘크리트 속 철근 부식의 확산 및 이에 따른 콘크리트 손상의 실시간 모니터링을 위한 매입형 센서 및 EIS 신호 분석방법의 고도화를 위한 기본 데이터를 제공하는데 의미가 있다.

Li Ion Diffusivity and Improved Electrochemical Performances of the Carbon Coated LiFePO4

  • This study examines the effects of a carbon coating on the electrochemical performances of $LiFePO_4$. The results show that the capacity of bare $LiFePO_4$ decreased sharply, whereas the $LiFePO_4$/C shows a well maintained initial capacity. The Li ion diffusivity of the bare and carbon coated $LiFePO_4$ is calculated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) to determine the correlation between the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ and Li diffusion. The diffusion constants for $LiFePO_4$ and $LiFePO_4$/C measured from CV are $6.56{\times}10^{-16}$ and $2.48{\times}10^{-15}\;cm^2\;s^{-1}$, respectively, indicating considerable increases in diffusivity after modifications. The Li ion diffusivity (DLi) values as a function of the lithium content in the cathode are estimated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The effects of the carbon coating as well as the mechanisms for the improved electrochemical performances after modification are discussed based on the diffusivity data.
