Effect of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-7 in Pebax Mixed Matrix Membrane for CO2/N2 Separation (CO2/N2 분리를 위한 Pebax 혼합막에서 Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-7의 영향)

  • In this study, a mixed matrix membrane was prepared by putting the zeolitic imidazolate framework-7 (ZIF-7) synthesized in Pebax-1657 and Pebax-2533, which are representative poly(ether-b-amide), and the permeability properties of single gas such as N2 and CO2 were investigated. From the gas permeation results, in the case of N2, both the Pebax-1657/ZIF-7 and Pebax-2533/ZIF-7 mixed matrix membranes showed a similar phenomenon in which the permeability decreased with the incorporation of ZIF-7. For CO2 permeability, the tendency was slightly different depending on the type of polymer. In the Pebax-1657/ZIF-7 mixed membrane, the CO2 permeability decreased in the range of 0~3 wt% of ZIF-7, and increased at higher contents. The CO2 permeability of the Pebax-2533/ZIF-7 mixed matrix membrane gradually decreased without increasing the permeability in the range of 0~5 wt% of ZIF-7. Regarding CO2/N2 selectivity, both mixed films showed a tendency to increase with increasing the ZIF-7 content. In particular, Pebax-2533/ZIF-7 5 wt% showed the best gas permeation performance compared to other mixed matrix membrane. This is thought to be because ZIF-7 shows better compatibility with Pebax-2533 than that of Pebax-1657 and also better CO2 selective property.

Feasibility of Intra-Operative BNCT Using Accelerator-Based Near-Threshold $^7Li(p,n)^7$Be Direct Neutrons

  • The dosage of intra-operative BNCT using near-threshold $^{7}$ Li(p,n)$^{7}$ Be direct neutrons was evaluated with the calculation method validated with the phantom experiment. The production of both neutrons by near-threshold $^{7}$ Li(p,n)$^{7}$ Be and gamma rays by $^{7}$ Li(p,p'gamma)$^{7}$ Li in a Li target was calculated using Lee's method and their transport in the phantom was calculated with MCNP-4B. As a result, the region satisfying the requirements of the protocol in intra-operative BNCT for brain tumors in Japan was acknowledged to be comparable to present BNCT, for the proton energy of 1.900 MeV for example. A boron-dose enhancer (BDE) introduced in this study to increase $^{10}$ (n,$\alpha$)$^{7}$ Li dose in a living body was effective. The void used to increase doses in deep regions was also valid with the BDE. It was found that intra-operative BNCT using near-threshold $^{7}$ Li(p,n)$^{7}$ Be direct neutrons is feasible.

Ets-1 enhances tumor migration through regulation of CCR7 expression

  • Ets-1 is a prototype of the ETS protein family. Members of the ETS protein family contain a unique ETS domain. Ets-1 is associated with cancer progression and metastasis in many types of cancer. Many studies have shown a link between elevated expression of Ets-1 in cancer biopsies and poor survival. CCR7 is a chemokine that binds to specific ligand CCL21/CCL19. CCR7 expression is associated with tumor metastasis and infiltration into lymph nodes. The objective of this study was to test whether Ets-1 could regulate CCR7 expression and enhance tumor metastasis. Our data showed that CCR7 expression was downregulated in Ets-1-deficient T cells upon T-cell stimulation. Overexpression of Ets-1 increased CCR7 expression in breast cancer cell lines. In contrast, knockdown of Ets-1 reduced CCR7 expression. Ets-1 could directly bind to CCR7 promoter and mediate CCR7 expression in luciferase reporter assays and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays. Transactivation activity of Ets-1 was independent of the Pointed domain of Ets-1. Ets-1 could also enhance $NF-{\kappa}B$ and CBP transactivation of CCR7 promoter. Our results also showed that Ets-1 could modulate cancer cell transmigration by altering CCR7 expression in transwell assay and wound healing assay. Taken together, our data suggest that Ets-1 can enhance CCR7 expression and contribute to tumor cell migration.

Increased UGT1A3 and UGT1A7 Expression is Associated with Pancreatic Cancer

  • UGT1A play important roles in the glucuronidation of a variety of endogenous and exogenous compounds. UGT1A isoforms are expressed tissue specifically. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between UGT1A3 and UGT1A7 mRNA expression and pancreatic cancer. Paired healthy and tumor tissue samples of 43 patients with pancreatic cancer were included in this study. UGT1A3 and UGT1A7 mRNA expressions were analyzed by real time-PCR. In the result of study, UGT1A3 and UGT1A7 mRNA expressions were significantly higher in tumor tissue than normal tissue of pancreatic cancer patients (p<0.05). In addition, high mRNA expression of UGT1A3 and UGT1A7 was significantly associated with larger tumor size (p<0.05). The data suggested that UGT1A3 and UGT1A7 may play roles in the progression of pancreatic cancer. Consequently, UGT1A3 and UGT1A7 are potential prognostic indicators.

Alteration in Surgical Technique of Tessier Classification Number 7 Cleft (Tessier 분류 7번 안면열의 수술방법의 변화)

  • Purpose: A Tessier classification number 7 cleft is an uncommon malformation that results from a failure of mesenchymal fusion within the maxillary and mandibular prominences of the 1st pharyngeal arch. Many operative techniques of the number 7 cleft repair have been proposed to restore function and improve aesthetics. Fifteen patients underwent repair of a number 7 cleft over 13 years by a modification of the surgical Technique, and an appraisal of the operative outcome is reported herein. Methods: A retrospective review was conducted involving 15 patients with number 7 clefts who underwent surgery from 1996 to 2009. The changes in surgical technique included skin closure, attachment of the orbicularis oris muscle, and position of the repaired commissure; the changes were analysed with a review of the medical records and the outcomes of surgery were analysed via photographs. Specifically, the technique of skin closure was changed from the a Z-plasty to a linear closure, the orbicularis oris muscle overlapped attachment was replaced by a side-to-side approximation with horizontal mattress sutures, and the position of the repaired commissure was changed from 1 mm laterally to 1 mm medially in reference to the non-cleft side. Results: A Z-plasty caused additional cutaneous scarring, an overlapped attachment of the orbicularis oris muscle caused a thick oral commissure, and the repaired commissure migrated to the lateral side, so a 1 mm, laterally-positioned commissure caused asymmetry. The altered procedure included a linear skin closure, a side-to-side orbicularis oris muscle approximation, and a 1 mm, medially-positioned commissure, which together resulted in a good outcome. Conclusion: The altered procedure for repair of a number 7 cleft as described herein, yields a short scar, no functional problems with the orbicularis oris muscle, a thin oral commissure, and symmetry of the repaired commissure.

Anti-inflammatory effect of naringenin-7-O-phosphate in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells (LPS로 유도된 RAW 264. 7 대식세포에서 Naringenin-7-O-phosphate의 항염증 활성)

  • The most abundant flavanone of grapefruits, naringenin (NN), is well known for its hepatoprotective, anti-lipid peroxidation and anti-carcinogenic effects. We generated three derivatives from NN using this technique in previous studies. Among them, it was confirmed that naringenin-7-O-phosphate (N7P), whose biological and physicochemical properties were not reported, showed a water solubility 45 times higher than that of NN. Therefore, in this study, the anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in RAW 264.7 cells to investigate the potential physiological activity of N7P. As a result, N7P showed nitric oxide (NO) inhibitory activity at concentrations that did not show toxicity. In addition, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) showed significant inhibitory activity from the lowest concentration of 12.5 μM and showed increased inhibitory activity compared to NN. In addition, as a result of western blot, N7P showed increased cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitory activity than NN, and effectively inhibited NO and PGE2 by significantly inhibiting their expression pathways. N7P also inhibited inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6. Based on these results, we propose that N7P can be used as a potent antiinflammatory agent.

Electrical and optical properties of doped indium tin oxide thin films for top emission organic light emission devices (Top emission 유기발광적소자 적용을 위한 도핑된 indium tin oxide 박막의 전기적 광학적 특성 연구)

  • Insulating and conducting 12CaO ${\cdot}7Al_2O_3$ (Cl2A7)-doped indium tin oxide (ITO) (ITO:Cl2A7 insulator and electride) thin films were deposited on glass substrates by an RF magnetron co-sputtering method with increasing number of insulating and conducting Cl2A7 target chips. The structural, electrical and optical properties of these films were investigated. The carrier concentration decreased and resistivity increased in the films with increasing number of Cl2A7 target chips. The optical transmittance of all of the thin films was above 80 % in the visible wavelength range. The structural property and surface roughness of the films were examined and the decrease of crystallinity and surface roughness was strongly dependent on the change of grain size.

THE EXPRESSION OF FGF-5 AND FGF-7 IN THE CYCLOSPORIN A-INDUCED GINGIVAL HYPERPLASIA (Cyclosporin A에 의한 치은 증식증에서 FGF-5와 FGF-7의 발현 양상에 대한 연구)

  • Cyclosporin A-induced gingival hyperplasia is frequently found in the patients who have been received an immunosuppressant for the organ transplantation. However, its exact mechanism is still unknown. The expression of FGF-5 and FGF-7 were studied in cyclosporine A-induced gingival hyperplasia (CGH) and inflammatory gingival hyperplasia (IGH). Immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization were used for localization of protein and mRNA. The expression of FGF-5 and FGF-7 was different from CGH and IGH. FGF-5 and FGF-7 was strongly expressed in fibroblast in CGH (P<0.005 and P<0.05, respectively). FGF-5 mRNA was localized in the middle portion of connective tissue. FGF-7 mRNA was also identified in fibroblasts and mast cells. In conclusion, FGF-5 and FGF-7 were produced excessively by fibroblasts in CGH. Considering their known functions, their expression in CGH is important for production of collagen and proliferation of fibroblasts.

A Brief Overview of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Its Plasmid O157

  • Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 is a major foodborne pathogen causing severe disease in humans worldwide. Healthy cattle are a reservoir of E. coli O157:H7, and bovine food products and fresh produce contaminated with bovine waste are the most common sources for disease outbreaks in the United States. E. coli O157:H7 also survives well in the environment. The abilities to cause human disease, colonize the bovine gastrointestinal tract, and survive in the environment require that E. coli O157:H7 adapt to a wide variety of conditions. Three major virulence factors of E. coli O157:H7 have been identified including Shiga toxins, products of the pathogenicity island called the locus of enterocyte effacement, and products of the F-like plasmid pO157. Among these virulence factors, the role of pO157 is least understood. This review provides a board overview of E. coli O157:H7 with an emphasis on pO157.
