Characteristic Analysis of BLDC Motor for Vehicle Compressor Based on High Voltage (고전압 기반의 자동차 압축기용 BLDC 모터의 특성 해석)

  • The performance design and analysis of an electric motor for vehicles is very complicated due to the variety of parameters. This paper presents the design of the BLDC motor for electric air compressor in high voltage(42V) system and compares with the characteristics of IPM, SPM type BLDC motor. Futher, optimal design for the electric motor has been carried out using Equivalent Magnetic Circuit and FEM Modelling. By analyzing the design results, it is found that design parameters for BLDC motor provided an useful tool for vehicles motor design.

  • In this paper, the high-voltage novel devices have been fabricated by 0.35 um BCD (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) process. Electrical characteristics of 20 V level BJT device, 30/60 V HV-CMOS, and 40/60 V LDMOS are analyzed. Also, the vertical/lateral BJT with the high-current gain and LIGBT with the high-voltage are proposed. In the experimental results, vertical/lateral BJT has breakdown voltage of 15 V and current gain of 100. The proposed LIGBT with the high-voltage has breakdown voltage of 195 V, threshold voltage of 1.5 V, and Vce, sat of 1.65 V.

  • A new high efficiency zero-voltage and zero-current switching (ZVZCS) bidirectional DC/DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter consists of two symmetric half-bridge cells as the input and output stages. MOSFETs of input stage are turned-on in ZVS condition, and those of output stage are turned-off in ZCS condition. In addition, MOSFETs of input and output stages have low voltage stresses clamped to input and output voltage, respectively. Therefore, the proposed converter has high efficiency and high power density. The operational principles are analyzed and the advantages of the proposed converter are described. The 300W prototype of the proposed converter is implemented for 42V hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) application in order to verify the operational principles and advantages.

A Study of On-Chip Voltage Down Converter for Semiconductor Devices

  • This paper proposes a new on-chip voltage down converter(VDC), which employs a new reference voltage generator(RVG). The converter adopts a temperature-independence reference voltage generator, and a voltage-up converter. The architecture of the proposed VDC has a high-precision, and it was verified based on a 0.25${\mu}m$ 1P5M standard CMOS technology. For 2.5V to 1.0V conversion, the RVG circuit has a good characteristics such as temperature dependency of only 0.2mV/$^{\circ}C$, and the voltage-up circuit has a good voltage deviation within ${\pm}$0.12% for ${\pm}$5% variation of supply voltage VDD. The output voltage is stabilized with ${\pm}$1mV for load current varying from 0 to 100mA.

  • In the conventional E-bike, a 42 V/10 A Li-ion battery drives a 24 V/10 A BLDC motor via a 6-switch PWM DC/AC inverter. The major problems of the conventional battery-fed motor drive systems are listed as follows. To charge the battery, an external battery charger (adapter) is required, which degrades the portability of E-bike users. In addition, given the high-frequency operation of the motor drive inverter, the switching losses are significant, which degrades the whole power efficiency. High-voltage batteries (42 V) require a complex battery management system (BMS), which degrades the reliability of the battery pack. In this paper, an embedded boost-converter battery charger for E-bikes is proposed. The variable output boost converter, which converts 16.8 V battery voltage to the required variable voltage of the inverter input, can use a low-voltage battery and thus improve the reliability of batteries. By varying the inverter input voltage via boost converter, a DC link voltage control method can be applied to reduce the switching frequency of the inverter, which improves the whole power efficiency. Given that the function of a flyback charger is integrated in the proposed boost converter, the portability of the E-bike user can be maximized by excluding an external adapter. The validity of the proposed circuit will be confirmed by operation mode analysis and simulation. Moreover, experimental results of integrative charger using Li-ion battery and 200 W motor test will be showed with a prototype sample as well.

Evaluation of Long Duration Current Impulse Withstand Characteristics of ZnO Blocks for High Voltage Surge Arresters (초고압 피뢰기용 ZnO 소자의 장시간 방전내량 특성 평가)

  • This paper describes the evaluation of the long duration current impulse withstand characteristics of ZnO blocks for high voltage surge arresters. Four ZnO varistors were manufactured with the general ceramic production method and the long duration current impulse withstand test, electrical uniformity evaluation test and microstructure observation were performed. All varistors exhibited high density, which was in the range of $5.42{\sim}5.46g/cm^3$. In the electrical properties, the reference voltage of samples was in the range of $5.11{\sim}5.25\;kV$ and the residual voltage was in the range of $8.314{\sim}8.523\;kV$. In the long duration current impulse withstand test, sample No.2 and No.3 failed at the 2nd and 4th shot of series impulse currents, respectively, but the rest survived 18 shots during the test. Before and after this test, the variation ratio of the residual voltage of samples survived was below 0.5 %, which was in the acceptance range of 5 %. According to the results of the test, it is thought that if the soldering method is improved, ZnO varistors would be possible to apply to the high voltage arresters like the station class and transmission line arresters in the near future.

  • This paper presents a ripple-free input current modified interleaved boost converter for high step-up applications. By integrating dual coupled inductors and voltage multiplier techniques, the proposed converter can reach a high step-up gain without an extremely high turn-ON period. In addition, a very small auxiliary inductor employed in series to the input dc source makes the input current ripple theoretically decreased to zero, which simplifies the design of the electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter. In addition, the voltage stresses on the semiconductor devices of the proposed converter are efficiently reduced, which makes high performance MOSFETs with low voltage rated and low resistance $r_{DS}$(ON) available to reduce the cost and conduction loss. The operating principles and steady-state analyses of the proposed converter are introduced in detail. Finally, a prototype circuit rated at 400W with a 42-50V input voltage and a 400V output voltage is built and tested to verify the effectiveness of theoretical analysis. Experimental results show that an efficiency of 95.3% can be achieved.

  • In the near future, the voltage of power system for passenger vehicle will be changed to 42V from existing 14V./ Because of increasing power and voltage ratings used in the vehicle the motor drive system has high switching dv/dt and it generates electromagnetic interference (EMI) To solve these problems multi-level inverter system may be used The feature of multi-level inverter is the output voltage to be synthesized from several levels of voltage Because of this feature high switching dv/dt and EMI can be reduced in the multi-level inverter system But as the number of level is increased manufacturing cost is getting expensive and system size is getting large. Because of these disadvantages the application of multi-level inverter has been restricted only to high power drives. The method to reduce manufacturing cost and system size is to integrate circuit of multi-level inverter into a few chips But isolated power supply and signal isolation circuit using transformer or opto-coupler for drive circuit are obstacles to implement the integrated circuit (IC) In this paper a drive circuit of 4-level inverter suitable for integration to hybrid or one chip is proposed In the proposed drive circuit DC link voltage is used directly as the power source of each gate drive circuit NPN transistors and PNP transistors are used to isolate to transfer the control signals. So the proposed drive circuit needs no transformers and opto-couplers for electrical isolation of drive circuit and is constructed only using components to be implemented on a silicon wafer With th e proposed drive circuit 4- level inverter system will be possible to be implemented through integrated circuit technology Using the proposed drive circuit 4- level inverter system is constructed and the validity and characteristics of the proposed drive circuit are proved through the experiments.

Improved Dual-Path Energy Recovery Circuit using a Current Source and a Voltage Source for High Resolution and Large-Sized Plasma Display Panel

  • An improved dual-path energy recovery circuit (ERC) using a current source and a voltage source for plasma display panel (PDP) is proposed. The proposed ERC uses the voltage source to charge a panel and the current source to discharge the panel. Thus, the proposed circuit can make the panel charge to $V_S$ and discharge to 0V, fully and it is possible to achieve zero voltage switching (ZVS) of all switches in H-bridge inverter and zero current switching (ZCS) of all switches in the ERC. Moreover, it has less conduction and switching loss in ERC devices by the dual energy recovery paths for charging and discharging the panel. Furthermore, it has features of canceling the gas discharge current, high performance and the low cost ERC components. The operation principle and features of the proposed ERC are presented in detail and verified with 42-inch SD PDP.

All varistors exhibited high density, which was in the range of $5.42{\sim}5.49g/cm^3$. In the electrical properties, the reference voltage of all samples was in the range of 5.11~5.72kV and the residual voltage was in the range of 8.314~9.305kV. In the long duration current impulse withstand test, sample 2 and 3 failed at the 2nd and 4th shot of series impulse currents, respectively, but the rest survived 18 shots during the test. Before and after this test, the variation ratio of the residual voltage of samples survived were below 1.7%, which were in the acceptance range of 5%.
