  • To identify and isolate anticancer active compounds from Solanum nigrum, S. nigrum was extracted with MeOH and then fractionated with various organic solvents ($CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc, n-BuOH, and $H_2O$). The cytotoxic effects of the MeOH extracts from S. nigrum and its organic solvent-soluble fractions were also tested in HT29 cells. All the MeOH extracts of S. nigrum and its organic-solvent extracts induced cytotoxicity in the HT29 cells. Among the extracts, $H_2O$ was the most effective. The $H_2O$ extract was purified further by repeated silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, Diaion HP- 20, and RP-18 column chromatography. An active anticancer compound, Des-N-26-methylene-dihydrotomatidine, was isolated with a molecular weight of 416 and a molecular formula of $C_{28}H_{48}O_2$. Analysis of the cytotoxic effects of Des-N-26-methylene-dihydrotomatidine on the HT29 cells compared to those of tomatine and tomatidine are similar in its structure, is higher than tomatidine above the 40 ${\mu}g/ml$ concentration, but lower than tomatine. This is the first study to describe the anticancer activity of Des-N-26-methylene-dihydrotomatidin, isolated from S. nigrum. Des-N-26- methylene-dihydrotomatidine seems to have potential as a natural bioactive compound.

  • A new encryption algorithm had been proposed as a replacement to the Data Encryption Standard (DES) in [1,2]. It called the Extended DES (EDES) has a key length of 112 bits. The plaintext data consists of 96 bits divided into 3 sub-blocks of 32 bits each. The EDES has a potentially higher resistance to differential cryptanalysis that the DES due to the asymmetric number of f functions performed on each of the 3 sub-blocks and due to the increase of S-boxes from 8 to 16. This paper propose a hardware design for the EDES and its implementation in VLSI. The VLSI chip implements data encryption and decryption in a single hardware unit. With a system clock frequency of 15Mhz the device permits a data conversion rate of about 90Mbit/sec. Therefore, the chip can be applied to on-line encryption in high-speed networking protocols.

  • Four putative GH12 genes were found in the Fusarium graminearum genome. The corresponding proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli, purified, and evaluated. FGSG_05851 and FGSG_11037 displayed high activities towards xyloglucan ($V_{max}$ of 4 and $11{\mu}mol/min$, respectively), whereas FGSG_07892 and FGSG_16349 were much less active with this substrate (0.081 and $0.004{\mu}mol/min$, respectively). However, all four of these enzymes had a similar binding affinity for xyloglucan. Xyloglucan was the substrate preferred by FGSG_05851, in contrast to the three other enzymes, which preferred ${\beta}$-glucan or lichenan. Therefore, FGSG_05851 is a xyloglucan-specific glucanase (E.C. 3.2.1.151) rather than an endoglucanase (E.C. 3.2.1.4) with broad substrate specificity. FGSG_11037 displayed a peculiar behavior in that the xyloglucan binding was highly cooperative, with a Hill coefficient of 2.5. Finally, FGSG_05851 essentially degraded xyloglucan into hepta-, octa-, and nonasaccharides, whereas the three other enzymes yielded hepta- and octa-saccharides as well as larger molecules.

  • In this paper, a new identity is given. On the basis of this identity, we establish some new estimates of Milne's quadrature rule, for functions whose first derivative is s-convex. We discuss the cases where the derivatives are bounded as well as Lipschitzian. Some illustrative applications are given.

  • In this paper, H.235 based security mechanism for H.323 multimedia applications was implemented in embedded environment. H.235 covers authentication using HMAC-SHAI -96, authenticated Diffie-Hellman key exchange, security capability exchange, session key management for voice encryption, and encryption functions such as DES, 3DES, RC2. H.235-based mechanisms were also analyzed in terms of its security and possible attacks.

  • Analytical method for diethylstibestrol (DES) and zeranol, which are growth promoters, in muscle foods was studied. Through selected ion monitoring analysis by GC-MSD for hormones, $M^+$ 412, 420, 416, and 433 for DES, $D_8DES$, ${\beta}-estradiol$, and zeranol, respectively, were selected for quantitative analysis. Removal of interferences in meat was done by passing the meat through 1 cc of strong anion exchanges resin, Dowex $2{\times}8$, 400 mesh, whereby the recoveries of DES and zeranol were achieved. Recoveries of DES and zeranol were ranged from 85 to 110%, and 75 to 110%, respectively, in meat using $D_8DES$ as an internal standard, while were 82 to 105%, and 65 to 120%, respectively, using ${\beta}-estradiol$ as an internal standard. These results show that both $D_8DES$ and ${\beta}-estradiol$ can be adopted as the internal standard for the analysis of DES and zeranol in muscle foods. Limits of detection of DES and zeranol were 0.05 and 1.0 ng/g, and limits of quantitation were 0.5 and 1.0 ng/g, respectively. The results of this study revealed no DES and zeranol were present in 14 samples of beefs, porks, ducks, chickens, mutiplicated flat fish, and trout.

  • This study concerns (i) Botanical characterization of local almond ecotype named "Beldi" based on flowering period and flowers color measurements (ii) Chemical characterization of almond oil such as acidity and peroxide index and specific UV absorbance values (K232 & K270). The color results of 100 flowers analyzed by chromameter shows two different color categories. The first is very light pink to whitish ($L^*=81.58$, $a^*=7.43$, $b^*=8.06$). The second is a dark pink ($L^*=71.64$, $a^*=18.34$, $b^*=4.97$) with a difference in color between the two categories ${\Delta}E=15.07$. Compared to Ferragnes/Ferraduel varieties, Beldi almond kernel has almost a comparable oil yield but different acidity and peroxide values which are 0.81%, $8.12meq/O_2/kg$ and 0.40%, $16.39meq/O_2/kg$ respectively.
