  • In this study we proposed a simplified finite element model of anchor bolt system inserted through concrete structures considering clamping forces. The three different finite element types using LS-DYNA are applied for numerical efficiency of the anchor bolt modeling. Combined beam and solid elements are used to reflect the tension state at internal part of anchor bolt due to torques. The clamping forces due to torques are considered by introducing a compression for a nut plane modeled by beam elements. The numerical examples show good agreement with different element types. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of different element types on the induced axial and shear forces of anchor bolts considering clamping forces.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find an inclination slope of the screw thread that is favorable in distributing the stresses to alveolar bone by using three dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and methods: Three types modelling changed implant thread with fixed pitch of 0.8 mm is the single thread implant with $3.8^{\circ}$ inclination, double thread implant with $7.7^{\circ}$ inclination and the triple thread implant with $11.5^{\circ}$ inclination. And three types implant angulation is the $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ on alveolar bone. The 9 modelling fabricated for three dimensional finite element analysis that restored prosthesis crown. The crown center applied on 200 N vertical load and $15^{\circ}$ tilting load. Results: 1. The more tilting of implant angulation, the more Von-Mises stress and Max principal stress is increasing. 2. Von-Mises stress and Max principal stress is increasing when applied $15^{\circ}$ tilting load than vertical load on the bone. 3. When the number of thread increased, the amount of Von-Mises stress, Max principal stress was reduced since the generated stress was effectively distributed. 4. Since the maximum principal stress affects on the alveolar bone can influence deeply on the longevity of the implants. When comparing the magnitude of the maximum principal stress, the triple thread implant had a least amount of stress. This shows that the triple thread implant gave a best result. Conclusion: A triple thread implant to increase in the thread slope inclination and number of thread is more effective on the distribution of stress than the single and double thread implants especially, implant angulation is more tilting than $10^{\circ}$ on alveolar bone. Thus, effective combination of thread number and thread slope inclination can help prolonging the longevity of implant.

  • Using three-dimensional (3-D) FE analyses, this paper provides a method for analyzing the effects on stresses and strains produced by angular and concentric misalignment of a test specimen for a torsion test. To quantitativele compare of the FE results, the average bending strain for the angular, concentric, and combined misalignment was proposed. To verify the effects of axial misalignment of the test specimens, we used both circular and tubular specimens. From the FE results, we proposed general predictions for the effects caused by the various types of axial misalignment and its direction. In addition, we confirmed the effect of initial yielding moment based on the initial yielding condition for axial misalignment of specimens in torsion tests.

  • This paper presents the results from a systematic finite element study on the bending moment resisting capacity of double web-angle connection for a CFT(concrete filled tube) composite frame subjected to cyclic loading. The three-dimensional nonlinear finite element models are constructed to investigate the rotational stiffness, bending moment capacity, and failure modes of the partially restrained composite CFT connections. A wide scope of additional structural behaviors explain the different influences of the double web-angle connections parameters, such as the different thickness of connection angles and the gage distances of high strength steel connection bar. The moment-rotation angle relationships obtained statically from the finite element analysis are compared with those from Richard's theoretical equation.

  • In this study, we propose a new short dental implant and investigate its bio-mechanical characteristics by using three dimensional finite element analyses. The proposed dental implant has the central cavity which can be integrated with the core of cancellous bone remained by trepanning drill. We take the Bicon short implant as a reference model for studying the effects according to the shape of cavity. The parametric finite element model using ANSYS APDL has been built to determine which length, diameter and thread of central cavity would be effective to dissipate stress. The reduction of undesirable stress in adjacent bone which can suppress bone defects and the eventual failure of implants. The numerical results shows that the cavity of well-determined shape has the beneficial effects on reducing the bone absorption in cancellous bone.

  • Delamination reduces an elastic buckling load of the laminated composite structures and lead to global structural failure at loads below the design level. Therefore, the problem of the delamination buckling of laminated composite structures has generated significant research interest and has been the subject of many theoretical and experimental investigations. However, questions still remain regarding a complete understanding and details of the phenomena involved. In this paper an efficient finite element model is presented for analyzing the elastic buckling behavior of laminated composite plates with square embedded delamination using a solid element based on a three-dimensional theory. The solid finite element, named by EAS-SOLID8, based on an enhanced assumed strain method is developed. The study for elastic buckling behavior of laminated composite plates with embedded square delaminations are focused on various parameters, such as support condition and width-to-thickness ratio. Both graphs and buckling modes in this paper are good guide for design of the laminated composite plates with embedded square delamination.

  • 3D finite element analyses of a corrugated steel web girder and a steel truss web girder are conducted to investigate the static and dynamic behaviour of the hybrid girders. And the analyses results are compared with those by the equivalent beam theory. The equivalent theory is a theory that all section properties of a truss structure are replaced by section properties of a beam including a shear coefficient. When applying the equivalent beam theory, the shear coefficient of the corrugated steel web girder is estimated as the area ratio of flange section to web section and that of the steel truss web girder is calculated by the equation proposed by Abdel. Static deflections and natural frequencies by 3D finite element analyses and those by the equivalent beam theory are in good agreement.

  • A computer program, MSSLL, was developed for the analysis of the "Multiple Shell Subjected to Lateral Loads" by utilizing 2-dimensional finite elements in a 3-dimensional global assemblage with 6 DOF at each nodal point. In this program, substructuring procedure with frontal solver was introduced in the solution procedure to save both human and computer resource when the whole structure consists of repeated identical substructures. Some of the results obtained by MSSLL were compared with the existing solutions by other methods. The effect of rise to span-length ratio was investigated for the behavior of the multiple conical shell with 8 substructures subjected to seismic loads by performing a parametric study.

  • This paper concerns the behavior of 2-Arch tunnel constructed under various conditions. A 2-Arch tunnel section adopted in a subway tunnel construction site is considered in this study. A calibrated 3D finite element model was adopted to conduct parametric studies on a variety of construction scenarios including lagged distance between left and right tunnels, overburden, and geological condition. The results of analyses were examined in terms of crown settlement, shotcrete lining stress, and load on center column in relation to the lagged distance, cover depth, and the ground condition. The results indicate that the shotcrete lining stress and the center pillar load are more influenced by the second tunnel excavation than the tunnel deformation. Also shown is that a greater lagged distance is required to minimize the interaction between two tunnels when the ground condition becomes weaker. Fundamental mechanisms of 2-arch tunnel were also discussed based on the results.
