  • This study aims at comparing and analyzing early childhood education systems in both South and North Koreas and suggesting educational alternatives for integrating in various aspects based on it, in order to build directions of early childhood education system in the preparation of Unification. A comparative study on the early childhood education system in South and North Korea was done in terms of early childhood education, public education of early childhood. As a result, there were differences rather than similarities in many areas due to the differences of political ideology between the South and the North. First, early childhood is not compulsory, but becomes public in South, while it is partially compulsory and has an overall public system in North in terms of its compulsory education and Pulic education. Second, as a result of comparing operating systems depending on early childhood education institutions in the South and North, there were differences in various areas such as subjects of foundation, classification of age, operating types, etc. Third, looking at its administrative support system, two Koreas has a similarity of a overall dual system, but showed a specific difference. Fourth, its public support had a similarity that early childhood education is done free of charge in two Koreas. In light of the results of comparing the early childhood education system in South and North Korea, this study suggests the following implications. First, as part of an effort to restore similarities of the early childhood education system between two Koreas, a challenge that must be addressed with priority is to integrate early childhood education-nursery in the early childhood education for age 3-5. Second, we'll take an effort to include the early childhood education for age 3-5 in the basic disciplines with 'Making early childhood education public' being currently focused. In addition, we should an attitude to recover a similarity through mutual exchange and to have advantages of the early childhood education in two Koreas as a challenge of taking an effort to integrate the early childhood education in the South and the North various studies and debates, discussions will be made for the meaning of the early childhood education and the integration.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the current status of smart phone usage, differences of developmental characteristics and time diaries between high- and low- usage groups. The study also tried predicting variables among children's personal and family environment factors in order to classify four year old children in the fifth year Panel Study on Korean Children into the two groups. Data was collected from 435 smart phone users and 157 of them who had started to use a phone before age 3.Frequency analysis, t-test and logistic regression were performed. The results showed that most 4 year old children started to use a phone in their fourth year and used it frequently. The low level groups of girls and all participants showed lower levels of behavior problems, and the low level group of all participants had a longer sleep times than the high level group had. Children's activity and social temperament were identified as predicting variables for classifying children into the two groups. The results suggested the necessity of measures preventing children from excessive smart phone usage in their early years and to consider children's temperament first.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the meaning of the experience of robot play in the free play time of 5-year-old children in daycare centers with the experience of 5-year-old children in the structural group activities of teachers. To this end, a total of 32 children (15 in the experimental group and 17 in the comparative group) aged 5 were conducted for 1 hour three times a week for 10 weeks. Robots were supported as toys in the classroom of the experimental group, and children in the comparative group freely experienced robot exploration and play during free play time, and children in the comparative group learned the robot's functions and performed structural group activities based on the 2019 Revised Nuri Curriculum national-level curriculum. As a result of analyzing the difference between pre-test and post-test, the use of robots in free play showed a significant effect in creativity and fluency of children, and a significant effect in expression of pleasure in playability. These results suggest that robots are meaningful as play materials in early childhood education, which aims for infant-led free play, and that it is worth studying the robot experiences of children in these free situations in the future.

  • The aim of this study was to examine how children's self control, mother's addiction to smart devices and parenting behavior influence the way young children used smart devices. Participants were made up of 166 preschoolers and their mothers. Descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. The results were as follows: First, children in their early childhood years used smart devices once or twice a week, for ten to thirty minutes, mainly during weekends. Children in their early childhood stage started to use smart devices before reaching the age of 3, and accessed them through their parents, usually along with their siblings. Parents allowed their children to use smart devices for fun and entertainment, with only 66.3% of them setting rules. Second, the mother's tendency to be immersed in smart devices, overprotection and permission were positively correlated to young children's overusage of smart devices, whereas geniality, encouragement, setting limits, and children's self control were negatively correlated. The study also found that the mother's tendency of being immersed in smart devices was the most influential factor for their children's overusage of smart devices. The value of this study lies in providing practical suggestions for children's smart device usage and parental education programs.

  • In order to increase our understanding of the injury mechanism in the child occupant, three year old child model was developed using commercial dynamic package DADS. Total 14 segments and 12 joints were used to compose a model in three points belted condition with booster seat. HYGE sled test case was simulated to validate the developed model. Based on the comparison of the model and published test results, the developed model appears to be a resonable representation of the three year old dummy.

  • Purpose : Neisseria meningitides is one of the most common causative pathogens of bacteremia and meningitis. Recently protein-conjugated vaccines have been developed and included in the routine vaccination schedule in a few countries. In Korea, carriage rates of N. meningitides among healthy adults have been reported. However, systematic data for childhood carriage rates are not available. This study was performed to evaluate the carriage rates of N. meningitides and the serotype distribution among healthy children attending day care centers. Methods : During the period of January through May 2005, nasopharyngeal swabs and culture were obtained from 904 children attending 13 different day care centers located in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. The Vitek NHI card was used to identify N. meningitides and the crgA gene was detected via polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Serotype determination was performed by agglutination test using N. meningitides antisera to serotypes A, B, C, D, 29E, W135, X, Y, and Z. PCR for detection of the org2 and saiD gene confirmed serotypes A, B, C, W135, and Y. Results : The mean age among 904 children was 4.5 years; 6.5% (59/904) were children <2 years old, 53.8% (486/904) were 2-5 years old, and 39.7% (359/904) were >5 years old; 52.0% (468/904) were male. N. meningitides was isolated from only 7 children attending 5 different day care centers and the overall carriage rate of N. meningitides was 0.8%. The detected serotypes of N. meningitides were serotype A (n=2), C (n=2), and Y (n=3). Conclusion : The carriage rate of N. meningitides among healthy children attending day care centers was very low in Korea and the detected serotypes were A, C, and Y.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relations between the quality of teacher-child relationship, child temperament, and teacher-child interaction. The subjects were 51 3-4 years old children who were attending a preschool in Seoul and their mothers. The mothers of the young children rated child temperament and the head teachers of the children evaluated the quality of teacher-child relationship. The frequency of teacher-child interactions in the classroom was collected through observation during self-selected activities in the classrooms. Observational data included frequency of teacher-initiated interactions and number of child-initiated interactions. The results showed that boys were more likely to have conflictual relationships with teachers and girls were likely to have close relationships with teachers. And lower levels of effortful control were associated with teacher-child conflict. More child-initiated interactions were related to the conflict relationships with teachers. Results suggest that child characteristics and teacher-child interactions contribute to children's relationships with teachers.
