Seasonal fluctuation of Beet armyworm, Spodoptem exigua, adults and larvae were momtored by pheromone trap and direct obseration in the welsh onion field, respecLively. Adult peaked on mid~late November and occurred 4 Limes a year by pheromone trap at Yesan, 1990. There were 3 peaks a year at Asan, 1991. The highest number of adults were caught on early September. In Suwon, the yearly number of adults caught by pheromone trap was high in the order of 1990, 1991, and 1992. In 1992, the moLh was initily caught on mid April by pheromone trap at Koheung, Chonnam, and it vms 3 month earlier than that at Suwon. The larvae of beet armyworm at welsh onion field at Asan, 1991 was first found on late June and gradually increased until mid September. The density at peak occurrence was about 20 individual per 100 hills of welsh onion. The peak of the larvae appeared 20 days after peak emergence of adult. It is expected that there are 4 times of occurrence when the first egg of beet armyworm IS laid on mid May at Suwon. It takes 48, 25, 23, and 58 days to complete 1st, 2nd, 3rd. and 4th generation, respectively.
Laboratory and field studies were conducted to investigate the initiation and termination factors for pupal diapause in the Oriental tabacco budworm, Heliothis assulta Guenee. Diapause induction was dependent of photoperiod and temperature experienced by 4th and 5th instar larve. One hundred percent of pupal diapause was obtained when larvae were grown at 10L/14D or shorter and $20^{\circ}C$. But at $25^{\circ}C$ the maximum rate of diapause was only about 85% at 8L/16D, the shortest photoperiod tested in this experiment. Adults, eggs or pupae did not respond to diapause-inducing environmental conditions. The critical photoperiod was 12-12.5 hr at $25^{\circ}C$and 14-14.5 hr at $20^{\circ}C$. In the field-collected sample 100% of diapuse rate was observed on Sept. 20 and thereafter in Suwon and middle part of Korea. Cold temperature treatment was not necessary in the termination of pupal diapause, but accelerated adult development.
Objectives: People who have chronic diseases, as well as gait imbalance or psychiatric drug use, may be susceptible to injuries from falls and slips. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of musculoskeletal diseases on incidental fall-related injuries among adults in Korea. Methods: We analyzed data from the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2009), which are national data obtained by a rolling survey sampling method. The 1-year incidence of fall-related injuries was defined by health service utilization within the last year due to injury occurring after a slip and fall, and musculoskeletal diseases included osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and back pain. To evaluate the effects of preexisting musculoskeletal diseases, adults diagnosed before the last year were considered the exposed group, and adults who had never been diagnosed were the unexposed group. Results: The weighted lifetime prevalence of musculoskeletal disease was 32 540 per 100 000 persons. Musculoskeletal diseases were associated with a higher risk of fall-related injury after adjustment for sex, age, residence, household income, education, occupation, visual disturbance, paralysis due to stroke, and medication for depression (odds ratio [OR], 1.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03 to 1.93). As the number of comorbid musculoskeletal diseases increased, the risk of fall-induced injuries increased (p-value for trend <0.001). In particular, patients who had any musculoskeletal condition were at much higher risk of recurrent fall-related injuries (OR, 6.20; 95% CI, 1.06 to 36.08). Conclusions: One must take into account the risk of fall-related injuries and provide prevention strategies among adults who have musculoskeletal diseases.
This study aimed to define a one portion size of food items frequently consumed for convenient use by Koreans in food selection, diet planning, and nutritional evaluation. We analyzed using the original data on 5,436 persons (60.87%) aged 20~64 years among 8,930 persons to whom NHANES 2005 and selected food items consumed by the intake frequency of 30 or higher among the 500 most frequently consumed food items. A total of 374 varieties of food items of regular use were selected. And the portion size of food items was set on the basis of the median (50th percentile) of the portion size for a single intake by a single person was analyzed. In cereals, the portion size of well polished rice was 80 g. In meats, the portion size of Korean beef cattle was 25 g. Among vegetable items, the portion size of Baechukimchi was 40 g. The portion size of the food items of regular use set in this study will be conveniently and effectively used by general consumers in selecting food items for a nutritionally balanced diet. In addition, these will be used as the basic data in setting the serving size in meal planning.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the depressive change and predictors of chronic illnesses and to examine whether depressive change predictors are different according to chronic disease types. Methods : Data from the 1st to the 10th year of the Korean Welfare Panel of 5,023 adults over 20 years of age who were treated for chronic diseases for more than three months were examined. We assessed demographic, sociological, and socioeconomic factors including depression predictors of chronically ill patients, and analyzed the data using latent growth modeling and multiple group analysis. Results : Depression symptoms of chronically ill patients gradually decreased, showing a linear relationship across time. In addition, multiple group analysis was performed for each type of chronic disease. Conclusions : We described the phenomenon of depression in chronically ill patients, and discussed the practical and policy interventions required to improve depression in chronically ill patients.
This study was conducted to investigate the intakes and preferences related to Korean traditional teas in each of the age groups. The survey was conducted from March $9^{th}$ to $23^{rd}$, 2015. The subjects in this study were 642 adults aged more than 20 years that resided in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. The health status score was 3.57, and the health concern score was 3.54. The reason for preferring traditional tea was 'health' (40.5%) and 'good taste, color, and aroma' (29.7%). The most important factor in drinking a traditional tea was health (37.1%). Acceptance of each type of traditional tea was ranked in order of 'grain tea', 'fruit tea', 'floral leaf tea', 'assorted tea', 'medical root tea', and 'tonic tea'. A total of 92.8% of respondents said traditional teas should be popularized. Regarding problems for popularization of traditional teas, the most common response was 'not popularized yet' (39.7%). Regarding the method for popularization of traditional teas, the most common response was 'convenience of purchase for ingredients'. As a result, preferences for traditional tea and popularization method were different according to age. It is thus necessary to develop traditional tea products considering the age range.

This study was performed to investigate the characteristic of physical touch in caring situation. The subjects of this study were adults in caring situation, therefore they were composed of 7 patients, 6 nurses, 3 doctors, 3 pharmacologists, 3 men in paramedicine area, 3 nursing educators and 13 normal general adults. The datas were gathered through nonstructured questionaire from June, 20th to September, 15th in 1995. The datas were subjects' descriptions about the intention, perception, and form of physical touch in caring situation and analysed by content analysis. The results as follow : The datas were divided into four areas. There were the situation being necessiated the physical touch, meaning of physical touch, form of physical touch and perception about physical touch in caring situation. The situation being necessiated physical touch were the situation that required physical treatment, to deliver the active expression of concern about the patients, to determine the treatment due to the identification of physical condition of patients and to induce the psychological eqilibrium into patient's mind. The meanings of physical touch in caring situation were - Good meanings that intention is to encourage, to be have hope about health and to deliver the affection willing to help patient. - therapeutic methods that were to facillitate the circulation of blood, to reduce the pain perception and to facillitate the circulation of qi. - interpersonal affectionate relation that the intentions were to deliver the understanding of patient's pain, were to delivery the meaning to the patient not be alone. The forms of physical touch in caring situation were none invasive forms just like laying hands on hand, head, shoulder, gentle knocking on the shoulder or back, massage of legs and back and finger pressure on acupuncture points. The perception of physical touch in caring situation divided into two parts. In family, the perceptions of physical touch in caring situation were to promote health status because physical touch induce the psychological peace, and to evoke the importance of relationship among family members. In relation with care giver, perception of physical touch in caring situation were inevitable process in treatment, and to deliver the trust and concern about patients.
The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of the correct food choices and nutrition management through nutrition labeling and provide basic data for building a nutrition labeling system for Korean restaurants. In the study, a survey was conducted from February 5th to February 27th in 2010 involving adults over the age of 20 living in part of the Gyeonggi-do area. The data was used to analyze the general characteristics, the awareness of nutrition labeling and the nutrition labeling contents by using the SPSS 18.0 package program. Among the 268 people surveyed, the total number of women was greater (60.4%) than men (39.6%). The perception of the necessity of nutrition labeling was a relatively high score of 3.99 on a 1 to 5 scale and the motivation to utilize nutrition labeling scored 3.89. The study found that females perceived nutrition labeling to be more important than did the males. In addition, the perception varied according to the level of education and age. In conclusion, since customers have a high demand for nutrition labeling in Korean restaurants and are motivated to utilize labeling when eating-out is relatively strong, labeling would be a good educational tool for leading a healthy food life. Furthermore, since the study found that differences occur between nutrition labeling contents or nutrients according to general characteristics, food service companies might be able to gain benefits through differentiated nutrition labeling that is catered for their main customers.
The purpose of this study was to provide information on obesity assessment for Koreans. Among total of 1012 research papers enlisted in the Korean J Community Nutrition form 1996 to 2011, 248 articles were examined in which subjects were divided into more than 2 groups by obesity rate. About the method of anthropometric data collection, more than half of the research papers examined 52.5% and 28.7% of studies utilized the directly measured data and self-described data, respectively. About the utilization of obesity assessment methods, indirect methods of weight-height index (BMI, BMI percentile, and R$\ddot{o}$hrer index) and PIBW (WLR, Broca index, and KDA) were 62.4% and 23.2%, respectably, and the direct method of percent body fat assessment was only 9.3%. The most frequently utilized methods were WLR in under primary and primary school children, and BMI in the middle and high school students and in adults. For primary school students, WLR was the most frequently utilized method up to 2007, but it changed to BMI percentile afterward. Broca Index was no longer utilized since 2008. There were no articles utilizing BMI percentile and R$\ddot{o}$hrer index for obesity assessment in adults. Criteria for obesity assessment were not consistent among research papers: for example, % body fat, 19~40%; BMI, 20~30; BMI percentile, 85th or 95th. In the case of PIBW, 120% of ideal weight was the most frequently utilized criterion for obesity. Based on these findings, we suggest that proper methods and criteria of obesity assessment for each age group should be determined and proclaimed.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral health behaviors of patients with hypertension and diabetic patients on the number of remaining teeth in Korean adults over 45 years of age, furthermore, we also aimed to develop oral health care programs and health promotion for patients with hypertension and diabetes. Methods: Altogether, 1,526 subjects with hypertension and diabetes from the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey (2013-2015) were analyzed. Results: A multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of oral health behavior and periodontal disease on residual teeth in patients with hypertension and diabetes after adjusting for age. We found 1.53 times the risk of having less than 20 remaining teeth in the group of brushing more than 3 times a day (95% CI: 1.00,2.35, p<0.001), 2.27 times (95% CI: 1.23-4.17, p<0.05) in the group not using the dental floss group 0.05), compared to the group undergoing regular dental check-up (95% CI: 0.93-1.85, p>0.05), compared to the non-smoking group 0.77 times (95% CI: 0.51-1.14, p>0.05), 1.33 times (95% CI: 0.98-1.80, p>0.05) in the drinking group compared to the non-drinking group, in the periodontal disease group, the risk of having less than 20 remaining teeth was 2.19 times higher (95% CI: 1.48-3.24, p>0.001) than in the normal group. Conclusions: As a super-aging society, develops in Korea, the prevalence of hypertension and diabetes will increase gradually. Therefore, an oral health policy should be implemented at the national level for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease as well as the management of oral health the elderly.
