The 7th national mathematics curriculum was revised in 2007. According to the revision curriculum, new texts and guides are developed and will come into effect for elementary and secondary school in 2009. Some contents are shifted and also newly added at the revision curriculum. This paper analyzed the gap between the revision and the 7th national mathematics curriculum based on the shifts in contents, and investigated on the difficulties that some graders probably will undergo owing to shifting the contents between grades. As a result, several important problems were found in some graders between the revision and the 7th national mathematics curriculum. In particular, some graders could not have a chance to learn some mathematical concepts without another lesson plans. For some graders, special lesson plans and supplementations are required. The brief summary of these supplementations as follows: ⅰ) For entering students in 2005, the supplementations about equations and direct proportion and inverse proportion should be needed at the 6th grade in 2010 or at the 7th grade in 2011. ⅱ) For entering students in 2006, the supplementations about estimations and correspondence should be needed at the 4th grade in 2009 or at the 5th grade in 2010. And the supplementations about the relation of fractions and decimals and the ratio should be needed at the 5th grade in 2010. ⅲ) For entering students in 2007, the supplementations about the addition and subtraction of time using second unit and the addition and subtraction of weight should be needed at the 3th grade in 2009 or at the 4th grade in 2010.
In Korea where there is the national curriculum and teachers depend highly on textbooks, the school mathematics is based on curriculum and textbooks. Especially considering responsibility that textbooks should reflect the curriculum properly, it is necessary to analyze the connection of mathematics curriculum and textbooks in order to review and improve the quality of our mathematics education. This research analyzes the connection of curriculum and textbooks for 5~6 grades and aims to have some implications for revision of the textbooks when application of elementary mathematics textbooks based on the 2009 revised national curriculum is completed to all grades. Following the preceding research for 1~2 and 3~4 grades, this research sets 5~6 grades as a subject of analysis and has four contents of analysis; analysis of textbooks based on restructured achievement criteria, analysis of connections between unit objectives of textbooks and the reconstructed achievement criteria, analysis of textbooks related to mathematical terms and symbols, and analysis of textbooks related to mathematical process. The result of analysis has some implications to develop textbooks based on the 2015 revised national curriculum.
This research aims to have some implications for revision of curriculum and textbooks by analysing connections between the 2009 revised national curriculum and its textbooks in elementary school mathematics. The results of analyses for 3~4 grades can be summarized in four aspects: Firstly, we noticed that the reconstructed achievement criteria were reflected properly in the textbooks except for use of calculators in 'Numbers and Operations'. Secondly, the analysis of connections between unit objectives of textbooks and the reconstructed achievement criteria suggests that 10 units must receive attention. Especially, the range of decimal numbers for adding and subtracting needs to be corrected. Thirdly, mathematical terms and symbols excluding 'unit fraction' were found in the textbooks. Finally, mathematical processes were also fully reflected in the textbooks. However 'simplifying' as a strategy for problem solving was only missing. This result shows good or poor connections between the curriculum and its textbooks, therefore it is expected to be used effectively to revise the national curriculum for mathematics and its textbooks.

2009 revised national curriculum for mathematics emphasizes the mathematical processes which consist of mathematical problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical communication. This study focused on applying these processes to an elementary school class for mathematics. Even though they say that it is desirable that the mathematical processes are realized in every mathematics class, any vague intention for their application without specific plans is apt to be apart from meaningful practice. Therefore this study proposed a lesson plan about the characteristics and the comparison of bar graphs and line graphs for 4th grade students based on the mathematical processes. And we applied it to 27 subjects. By observing and analyzing their activities and communications, we discussed about the guidelines of applying the mathematical processes to elementary school classes for mathematics.
This study is a comparative study on the Korean and Chinese elementary school mathematics curriculum. Korea and China have announced a new mathematics curriculum in 2011, and have recently carried out in the whole school year. Korea and China are the countries to manage the national curriculum. The comparison with China is significant because of the similarity of our tradition and culture. In addition, the influence of Chinese education has been increasing gradually. Thus, the curriculum comparison between China and Korea has a significant value. Through this study, I extract the significant implications of mathematics education in Korea. This study can be summarized as the following. First, I have analyzed the elementary mathematics curriculum document systems in Korea and China. Second, I compared the goals of mathematics education in Korea and China. Third, this study compared the content areas and learning in elementary school mathematics curriculum in Korea and China. Fourth, I have analyzed the teaching and learning methods and the assessment of Korea and China. Finally, we compared and analyzed the proposed points for action set out in elementary school mathematics curriculum courses in Korea and China. The results of this study are expected to provide significant implications for the new curriculum document structure and mathematical contents of Korea.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics(CCSSM) is a blueprint for school mathematics in 2010s of the United States. CCSSM can be divided into two major parts, the standards for mathematical content and the standards for mathematical practice. This study focused on the latter. Mathematical practice comes from the mathematical process in 'Principles and standards for school mathematics(NCTM, 2000)' as well as the mathematical proficiency in 'Adding it up(NRC, 2001)'. It is composed of eight standards which mathematically proficient students are expected to do. From Korean perspective, it can also be comparable with the mathematical process which contains mathematical problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical communication and was provided by the 2009 revised national curriculum for mathematics in Korea. However, few focused the standards for mathematical practice among the studies related to CCSSM in Korea. Moreover, there is a study that even ignores the existence of the standards for mathematical practice itself. This study aims to understand the standards for mathematical practice through analysing the document of CCSSM and its successive materials for implementing the CCSSM. This understanding will help effective implementation of the mathematical process in Korea.
In Korea, the school mathematics curricula have been revised in every average 6 years by the government. From the year 2013, the new revised curricula called 2009 version are implied. The subject of elementary mathematics in this new curricula contains four issues to be improved. First, it should be allowed to call the basic figures such as box, cylinder, ball, quadrilateral, triangle and circle in verbal languages. Second, the name of the activities to define mathematical concepts should be changed from 'Yaksok', which means 'promise' in English, to a better and more honest one. Third, the concave polygons should be treated together with the convex ones. Fourth, the calculations of fractions should be weakened as much as possible for the elementary school children.
Probability has distinctive characteristics which are different from other areas of school mathematics. The critical change can be noticed in the domain, 'probability and statistics' of 2009 revised national curriculum for elementary school mathematics. This indicates that the concept of chance is supposed to be taught in the 5~6 grade band instead of the definition of probability which is moved to the middle school level. The purpose of this study is to seek desirable methods for teaching the concept of chance which reflect the achievement criteria and the attention point for teaching and learning of the curriculum at the point of time when textbooks haven't yet been developed. To do this, based on theoretical considerations and comparative analysis of the curricula in the longitudinal - latitudinal dimensions respectively, the validity of the latest curriculum change was confirmed and several learning activities were devised. And then two lessons were planned for applying these activities to eight fifth graders and were implemented along the plan. As a result, the relevance of the learning activities was examined and students' difficulties in learning the concept of chance with educational implications were discussed.
This research investigated the Revised mathematics curriculum and the National Achievement Test of Japan that advanced by leaps and bounds in PISA 2012. As compared with Korea, Japan shows similar trends in the affective domain and the cognitive domain of international achievement test. To put it concretely, this research compared and analyzed the mathematics contents domain of the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum of Korea and the 2008 revised mathematics curriculum of Japan being applied. The analysis was conducted in many aspects including overall of Japanese mathematics education system, the contents to be covered in each grade, and the methods of essential learning themes. We compared the mathematics contents dealt with each country based on the framework of analysis such as
. Also, this research compared and analyzed overview of evaluation system, assessment frame, item characteristic, type of item of NAEA, NAT, and PISA. The results show the introduction time, the degree of deepening themes handled in each country, common themes and topics were very similar between Korea and Japan. But content area of Japan and Korea have been highlighted in the curriculum of middle school and elementary school in each are different. We know that Test B of NAT also emphasized the use of mathematical knowledge. Form the results, we obtained the basic data for the improvement of the next our curriculum. In addition, this results suggests the implications for the improvement of school mathematics curriculum of Korea.
Shanghai has been reported as the highest performing countries(economies) in PISA 2009 and PISA 2012. In this reason, we reviewed literatures related to educational system of Shanghai focusing on the mathematics education. Additionally, we analysed the results of PISA 2009 of mathematics domain between Korea and Shanghai to compare some differences between two countries. As a result, we discovered the followings: 1) Comparing with Shanghai students, Korea students attained low performance in every sub-categories of mathematics abilities indicated in the PISA framework. 2) In PISA 2009 Framework, Korea students produced low achievement than Shanghai students in sub-categories of "reflection". 3) In PISA 2012 Framework. Korea students attained low performance than Shanghai students in sub-categories of "formulating". Consequently, it gave us insight into the idea that school mathematics in Korea should use authentic context to help students improve their competencies "reflection" and "formulating".
