Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and the validity of the Practice Environment Scale of Nursing Work Index (PES-NWI) scale when applied to Korean psychiatric nurses working in the psychiatric hospital in Korea. Methods: Data from 224 psychiatric nurses working in the 6 psychiatric hospitals in Korea were analyzed using Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, item total correlation, and exploratory factor analysis. Results: The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for the 27 items from the PES-NWI were .93, and the item total correlation coefficients ranged from .38 to .64. Six factors which explained 61.2 of variance in the perception of practice environment, emerged; nurse professional role and development, nurse manager ability, leadership, and support of nurses, staffing and resource adequacy, nursing foundation for quality of care, collegial nurse-physician relations, co-worker's ability and qualification. Five derived factors reconstructed, and two factors were renamed. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate that not all but 27 items from PES-NWI is a reliable and valid scale when applied to Korean psychiatric nurses working in Korea. Also findings indicate that Korean psychiatric nurses perceive practice environment differently than American nurses but have some point of similarities with Asian nurses working in the United States.
Purpose: This study identified the factors influencing the self-care performance among gout patients to provide the basis of the development of a nursing intervention program that can improve the self-care performance. Methods: A survey was conducted of 132 gout patients who visited the departments of rheumatology and orthopedics from September to November 2013. The data were collected using the instruments for knowledge of gout, self-care performance, and self-efficacy. Results: The gout patients' knowledge, self-efficacy, exercise pattern, and drink pattern accounted for 71.2% of the self-care performance. Among them, the most important factor affecting on self-care behaviors was knowledge levels, showing the variance of 51.0%. Conclusion: The strategy for improving the knowledge and self -efficacy level should be considered in the development of educational programs for gout patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to estimate the effects of a cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program on post-trauma risk and anxiety in breast cancer patients. The cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program consisted of exercise, education, and cognitive supports. Methods: A one group pretest-posttest experimental design was used for this study. Fourteen mastectomy patients, the subjects of the group participated in the BeHaS exercise program. The program was provided for 8 weeks, once a week in C hospital. Data were collected from October to November 2012 with self report structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, and Wilcoxon Signed Rank test were used to analyze data with the SPSS 19.0. Results: The mean age of participants was 53 and the mean postoperative period after the surgery was 18.64 months. After the BeHaS exercise program, while there was no significant decrease in post-trauma risk scores, there was a significant difference in anxiety (z=-2.20, p=.028). Conclusion: This program has effects on decreasing anxiety in patients with breast cancer. Therefore the BeHaS exercise program should be applied as a nursing intervention to reduce anxiety for the patients with breast cancer.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the using pattern of alternative therapies in chronic arthritics. Method: We interviewed 192 Arthritis patients lived in the metropolitan area with structured questionnaire from August to september in 2004. Data were analyzed statistically by using SPSS program. Result: Results were summarized as follows; 1. 89.0% of subjects had utilized one or more types of alternative therapies 80.8% of these patients did not consult a nurse or doctor with using alternative therapies. 2. 87.7% of subjects obtained information of using the alternative therapy from similar patients, their families or relatives etc. The most frequently used types of alternative therapies are hand acupuncture(58.0%), bathing(29.6%), massage(25.4%) taping therapy(13.0%). 3. After using alternative therapies, over 80% of subjects answered that they were satisfied to effects of alternative therapies and only 9.4% of them responded that they experienced side effects from use of alternative therapies. Conclusion: results of the study showed that most of patients with arthritis have used alternative therapies, they were satisfied to effect of using alternative therapies. Therefore, many research for use of alternative therapy and the development of standardized protocol of nursing intervention appling alternative therapy need to be achieved.
The purpose of this study was examine the effect of self-exercise on patients with chronic arthritis. This study was performed from 1999 to 2001 with 107 subjects. Pain, Fatigue, Flexibility and Health status were measured. Data were analysed by SPSSWIN 10. 0 Package program, frequency, independent t-test and One Way ANOVA. The results were as follows : Of the 107 patients who were sutdied, mean age was 62 years and most of common disease were osteoarthritis. 67.4%was doing self-exercise and self-exercise consisted of 17 types of exercise. Fatigue was statistically different by disease type, duration of disease, education respectively. And fatigue, left shoulder flexibility were significantly different by duration of disease. There weren't significant differences between patient with self-exercise and patient without self-exercise on pain fatigue, flexibility and halth status. These findings confirms that self-exercise do not effective in increasing health improvement for the patients with osteoarthritis. From results of this study indicate that patients with arthritis should have taken systematic exercise such as the self-help education program aquatic exercise program for arthritis patient.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between low back pain and job stress in hospital nurses. Method: A descriptive correlation research design was employed. The participants were 355 nurses who worked in a general hospital in W city Kangwon-do and consented to participate in this study. The Visual Analog Scale and job stress scale were used in this study. Analysis included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and partial correlation coefficients. Results: Experience of low back pain for nurse in the past was 86.5% and in the present was 67.5% for low back pain which measured an average of 4.4 points for the level of low back pain. The mean score for job stress was relatively low(M=47.2). Job demand, organization system, job instability and conflict in relationships contributed to high stress scores, instead inappropriate compensation, job culture, and job autonomy contributed to low stress. There was a significant relationship between low back pain and job stress. Conclusion: These results suggest that further research is needed to develop programs to prevention and management of low back pain for nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Tai Chi exercise on muscle strength, grip strength, flexibility, pain, depression and self-efficacy in patients with osteoarthritis. Method: With a quasi-experimental design, 46 persons with osteoarthritis were assigned into an experimental group (n=22) or a control group (n=24). Muscle strength, grip strength, flexibility, pain, depression and self-efficacy were measured both before and after the exercise. Data were analyzed with SPSS WIN using descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANCOVA. Results: The mean age of the subjects was 68 years in the experimental group and 64 years in the control group. After controlling for age and pre-test outcome variables, muscle strength scores (F=-14.8, p= .00), grip strength scores (Rt: F=8.40, p= .01), and self-efficacy (F=47.3, p= .00) improved more in the experimental group than the control group. Joint pain scores (F=15.0, p= .00) and depression scores (F=14.7, p= .00) decreased in the experimental group. Conclusion: Tai Chi exercise is likely to be an effective nursing intervention to improve muscle strength, grip strength, and self-efficacy and reduce pain and depression for patients with osteoarthritis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a 8-week dynamic yoga program on body composition and blood lipids in middle-aged post-menopausal women. Method: Twenty participants were allocated to the yoga group (YG, n=10) or the control group (CG, n=10). They were assessed for lean body mass, percent body fat, waist to hip ratio, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride both before and after intervention. The yoga group participated in the program lasting $50{\sim}60$ minutes, five times a week for 8 weeks. Results: Unlike the control group, the yoga group showed a significant decrease in total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, percent body fat, and waist hip ratio after the yoga training. However, changes in lean body mass, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride level during the intervention period were not different between the yoga group and the control group. Conclusion: The 8-week dynamic yoga program could be adopted to prevent cardiovascular diseases in middle-aged post-menopausal women by promoting body composition & blood lipids.
This study was undertaken to measure the diffusibility and antimicrobial effectiveness of the medication used in clinical practice. To study the diffusibility of the root canal medicament, loss of formocresol and camphorated phenol from a cotton pellet after insertion into the pulp chamber of 260 molars prepared as routine endodontic treatment was measured. Measurement was done for the one time insertions and for the reinsertions using ultraviolet spectrophotometer. Antibacterial effectiveness against three microoganisms, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and a-hemolytic streptococcus, on the blood agar plate was observed by measurement of the inhibition zone with. various amount of medicaments. The following results were observed. 1. Nearly all of the medication were lost in the first day after insertion and the residual amount of camphorated phenol was greater than that of formocresol. 2. Residual amounts of medication in the reinsertion group were greater than that of the one time insertion group. 3. Within the pulp chamber diffusibility of formocresol was greater than that of camphorated phenol. 4. The amount of formocresol diffusing out from the tooth was greater than that of camphorated phenol. 5. Antibacterial effectiveness was observed from the residual amount of formocresol in the reinsertion group and in other groups no antibacterial effectiveness was observed.
Artificial canals were prepared by means of engine reamer on the slab which was made of clear acrylic resin. The shape of this canal is similar to the natural canal, the size is almost same as Kerr File No. 70, and the length is about 20mm. Sealer, Zine oxide eugenol mixture was prepared as matched to spatula test. Lentulo filler was inserted as deep as middle portion and apical one-third portion of the canal and the dental engine was driven in the speed of 1,000 and 3,000 r.p.m. in 30 seconds and 60 seconds with feeding of the sealer. The author measured the excess flow of the canal sealer from Lentulo end. Following are the results obtained from this study. 1. Lentulo insertion at the middle portion 1,000 r.p.m. in 30 seconds case: 0.21mm Same as above in 60 seconds: 0.20mm 2. Lentulo insertion at apical-thirds. 1,000 r.p.m. in 30 seconds: 0.22mm. Same as above in 60 seconds: 0.20mm. 3. Lentulo insertion at middle portion. 3,000 r.p.m. in 30 seconds: 0.14mm Same as above in 60 seconds: 0.25mm. 4. Lentulo insertion at apical-thirds, 3,000 r.p.m. in 30 seconds: 0.11mm Same as above in 60 seconds: 0.27mm.
