  • The purpose of this study was to compare the conceptual and algorithmic problem solving ability on Boyle's law and Charles's law according to cognitive levels and characteristics of students in middle school 1st grade students. For this study, questionnaire items of conceptual and algorithmic problem solving ability were developed. and the problem solving ability according to cognitive levels and characteristics of students was compared. The long-term memory effect in conceptual and algorithmic problem solving ability according to cognitive levels was investigated, and problem solving process were analyzed by questionnaire items. In the results of this study, conceptual problem solving ability was higher than algorithmic problem solving ability in all cognitive levels. There was statistically significant difference in concrete operational period and transitional period students. In comparison of the long-term memory effect in conceptual and algorithmic problem solving ability, formal operational period students had the long-term memory effect. There was no statistically significant difference in the conceptual and algorithmic problem solving ability according to private education among the characteristics of students. But there was statistically significant difference in the problem solving ability according to experiences of the scientific activities and hopes to related scientific careers. From results of analysis of problem solving process, it is known that the students had a tendency to just remember macroscopic phenomena and to solve the problems without understanding the concepts. Therefore, teaching and learning strategy is necessary to replace unscientific concepts by the scientific concepts through identifying students's unscientific concepts in advance.

  • This study compared the needs for entering graduate school of Dental Hygiene students in Bachelor's Degree Completion Program(BDCP) and 4-year course to provide information about entering graduate school. This survey was conducted for one month from the $26^{th}$ May to the $24^{th}$ June, 2010. The collected data was analyzed using a SPSS WIN 18.0 program. More BDCP students answered that they wanted to enter graduate school (p<0.001). More BDCP students wanted to study Dental Hygiene but more of the 4-year course students wanted to study Dentistry in graduate school (p<0.001). Both groups prefer the part-time curriculum but only if it was the same as the full-time curriculum and more 4-year course students answered in this way (p<0.05). The major was the highest consideration when they choose graduate school, but the BDCP students also considered other reasons (distance, registration fee, period) (p<0.05). Most information was obtained from visiting the web-site (p>0.05). Both groups responded 'yes' to the need for development of a master's course in dental hygiene but a higher proportion of BDCP students (76.6%) answered in the affirmative (p<0.001). In conclusion, graduate schools should find the various ways to give more information to the students.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the work values of undergraduate-level foodservice major students. In order to assess work values of the participating students, this study adopted 'Maryland Work Values Inventory'. Data from a total of 290 surveys were collected. The participants consisted of 146 commercial foodservice major students and 144 institutional foodservice major students. Among the seven work values, both groups ranked 'job advancement' as the most important work value. Commercial foodservice major students rated 'altruism' as the least important work value, whereas it was 'stimulation' for institutional foodservice major students. 'Need for work' was evaluated statistically higher by junior and senior students compared to sophomore students of commercial foodservice major (p<0.05). In both foodservice majors, a positive relationship was found between work value scores and grade levels. All work value scores tended to be higher for students in higher grades. This tendency was especially statistically clear for the value 'need for work' for commercial foodservice major students and 'money and prestige' for institutional foodservice major students (p<0.05). There were some gaps in the work values between students with different career field choices. For the commercial foodservice majors, those interested in fine dining perceived 'satisfaction and accomplishment' and 'altruism' as more important [4.33 (p<0.05) and 4.05 (p<0.01), respectively] compared to students who had interests in fast food restaurants (4.06 and 3.67 respectively). Scores for 'satisfaction & accomplishment' (p<0.05), 'money & prestige' (p<0.001), and 'stimulation' (p<0.001) were significantly different among institutional foodservice major students. In addition, students more interested in industrial foodservice field regarded 'money & prestige' and 'stimulation' as less important as indicated by noticeably lower scores (3.74, 3.55 respectively) in comparison to the other group (p<0.001). The results of this study, which explored foodservice major students' work values, suggest that there is an increased need for the students to build up their work values as well as for the foodservice industry to offer appropriate work values to future foodservice employees.

  • The purpose of this paper was to suggest effective management of clothing department in vocational high schools. Bibliographic research on ten vocational high schools' clothing departments was done. Also a survey was done to figure out what students and teachers think of clothing department education. The results were as follows. There are ten clothing departments in vocational high schools countrywide. 1493 students are enrolled in the department and they are taught by 51 teachers. Each school has two to seven laboratories. Professional subject time assignment of clothing department varies from 82 to 112 hours. Students chose clothing department in order to enter the university and their satisfaction on the department was "fair." Students' satisfaction level of professional education courses was "fair" and they felt difficulties both in theory and practice. Students answered that Embroidery/Knitting courses should be closed and Fashion Coordination be opened. Students were "fairly" satisfied with facilities for practice and felt job training was necessary. Most of them wanted to enter university after high school graduation. Teachers answered professional education curriculum was "fair." They found it necessary to improve the textbooks and felt both theory and practice difficult. They wanted Embroidery/Knitting courses to be closed and Fashion CAD course to be installed. From the teachers' view, students' prospect was better to enter university than to get a job. Teachers suffered from too much teaching-unrelated workload and wanted the number of teachers to be increased. Considering the above results, vocational high schools should concentrate their efforts on making students continue to study by extending the way to enter the same department of university as department of vocational high schools. In addition, they should develop various practice programs through field practice and educational-industrial relationship to help students get jobs. Both teachers and students think that the clothing department curriculum is difficult now. Therefore, the level of the curriculum should be adjusted. Finally, it was necessary to increase the number of teachers and to carry out teachers' training to raise quality in education.

  • In the reality that the seriousness and concern about the youth problem is increasing, this study focuses on the vision plan project supporting the NEET youth in the social welfare field. Therefore, this study analyzed how the social workers recognized the NEET problem before participating in the project, what difficulties they experienced in the process of the project, and how they coped with these difficulties. The results of the study are as follows. Social workers were saddened by the seriousness of the youth problem before their participation, but they recognized that there was no way to solve it and many social workers were not fully aware of the youth or NEET issues. In this context, in the course of running a project with NEET youth, social workers experienced difficulties due to the nature of the NEET youth, difficulty in forming a relationship with NEET youth, and difficulties for young people not to spend time in the program. And social workers also faced difficulties due to the lack of know-how in the project, difficulties in operating the center alone, and difficulty in achieving employment goals. In the process of coping with these difficulties, social workers have actively sought, persuaded and supported the NEET youths to participate in the project, adapted the time, place and method to the youth, and removed the stigmatization element in the project. They also worked closely with local residents, local institutions and municipalities, formed networks, and changed the viewpoint of providing work experience rather than getting young people, but seeing long-term outcome. As a result, social workers have experienced not only individual change but also social welfare organization, field, community and local institutional change. Based on these results, this study suggested that the social welfare practice field should provide various activities in the process of supporting the youth gap year policy. In addition, this study suggests that the social workers play a role in connecting various actors rather than suppliers when working with young people, and that the social welfare field should expand the scope of project to include youth.

  • The purposes of this study is to verify additional demand of students for secondary vocational education, and draw political implications. To meet the purposes, firstly we analyzed current policies on the secondary vocational education. Second, we divided additional demand of students for secondary vocational education into practical and potential demand. Practical demand by students who would like to take further vocational education in secondary education system includes students who hoped to enter vocational high school however they failed to go, the first or second year students who transferred from general high school to vocational high school, and the third year students who are in general high school would like to take commissioned vocational courses. Potential demand is an additional demand for secondary vocational education in a society perspective. This includes a student who downgraded employment even though they entered college or university after graduated general high-school. Comparing the result of this study with the entrance quota of vocational high-school, additional demand of students for secondary vocational education showed that accounted for 61.2 percent of the entrance quota year 2015. Specifically, potential demand accounts for 31.7 percent of the entrance quota for vocational high school and practical demand accounts for 29.5 percent.

  • This study is aimed to provide basic data to set the direction of polar literacy education and to raise awareness of the importance of polar research. Elementary, middle, and high school students' perception of the polar region was examined in terms of current status of polar information, impression regarding polar regions, and awareness of related issues. The study included 975 students from nine elementary, middle, and high schools, who responded to 16 questions, including close-ended and open-ended items. The results suggest that students had more experiences regarding the polar region on audiovisual media, but relatively limited learning experiences in school education. The impression they had of the polar region was confined to the monotonous image of a polar bear in crisis, following the melting of the glacier due to global warming. The students formed powerful images by combining scenes they saw in audiovisual media with emotions. In terms of recognizing problems in the polar region, the students were generally interested in creatures, natural environment, and climate change, but their interests varied depending on their school level and their own career path. The students highly valued the scientist's status as agents to address the problems facing the region, and gave priority to global citizenship values rather than practical standards. Based on the results, we suggest the following: introducing and systematizing content focusing on the polar region in the school curriculum, providing a differentiated learning experience through cooperation between scientists and educators, establishing polar literacy based on concepts that are relevant to various subjects, earth system-centered learning approach, setting the direction for follow-up studies and the need for science education that incorporates diverse values.
