Switchgrass was selected as a promising biomass resource for bioethanol production through popping pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification and fermentation using commercial cellulase and xylanase, and fermenting yeast. The reducing sugar yields of popping pretreated switchgrass after enzymatic saccharification were above 95% and the glucose in thesaccharificaiton solution to ethanol conversion rate after fermentation with $Saccharomyces$$cerevisiae$ was reached to 89.6%. Chemical compositions after popping pretreatment developed in our laboratory were 40.8% glucose and 20.3% xylose, with much of glucose remaining and only xylose decreased to 4.75%. This means that the hemicelluloses area broke off during popping pretreatment. FE-SEMexamination of substrate particles after popping pretreatment was showed fiber separation, and tearing and presence of numerous micro pores. These changes help explain, enhanced enzymatic penetration resulting in improved hydrolysis of switchgrass particles after popping pretreatment.
The green algae have cellulose as a main structural component of their cell wall and the cellulose content in green algae is much higher than other marine algae such as brown algae and red algae. Furthermore, green algae do not contain lignin in their cell wall and store starch as food in their plastids. Thus, it was investigated that the effect of hydrothermal pretreatment process utilizing microwave irradiation for Ulva pertusa Kjellman, a division of green algae, which is expected to be utilized for bioenergy production, on the enzymatic hydrolysis. The hydrothermal temperature have an effect on the pretreatment of Ulva pertusa Kjellman, but the effect of power of microwave irradiation is negligible. The rate of enzymatic hydrolysis was increased as the hydrothermal temperature increased until $140^{\circ}C$. The enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated Ulva pertusa Kjellman under the optimum pretreatment conditions (50 W of microwave irradiation power and $150^{\circ}C$ of hydrothermal temperature) with cellulase, ${\alpha}$-amylase, and Novozyme 188 having ${\beta}$-glucosidase acitivity resulted in the saccharification of 96 wt% of total carbohydrate in Ulva pertusa Kjellman during 3 hrs, while it took 24 hrs for the enzymatic hydrolysis of untreated Ulva pertusa Kjellman. It confirmed that the hydrothermal pretreatment was effective on Ulva pertusa Kjellman for the enzymatic hydrolysis.

In this study, the effects of citrate buffer pretreatment conditions (solid-to-liquid ratio, reaction temperature, pH and concentration of buffer) on enzymatic hydrolysis of E. intestinalis for total reducing sugar (TRS) production were investigated. As a results of the citrate buffer pretreatment, a 5.40% hydrolysis yield was obtained under conditions including 1:10 solid-to-liquid ratio, 0.25 M citrate buffer (pH 3.5) at $140^{\circ}C$ for 60 min. The maximum hydrolysis yield of 18.68% was obtained to enzymatic hydrolysis after pretreatment. This result is 1.81 times higher than that of control.

The effect of surfactant on the hydrolysis of used newspaper was investigated. The most suitable surfactant for the pretreatment stage was found to be NP-series surfactants among 9 kinds of non ionic surfactants. Process parameters such as surfactant concentration, mixing speed, pretreatment temperature and time were tested to optimize for maximum digestibility and 0.5%, 100rpm, 30$^{\circ}C$, and 1 h were found to be optimum, respectively. In order to maximize digestibility, substrate was pretreated with NP-20 and then the pretreated substrate was hydrolyzed by adding TW-80. The effect of surfactant on the hydrolysis of previously surfactant-pretreated newspaper was marginal. Therefore, the digestibility with the addition order of enzyme and surfactant was investigated by using surfactant only in hydrolysis stage. The results show that digestibility was more lowered as the surfactant addition after adding enzyme to substrate was more delayed.
An effective method for production of glucose was developed using enzymatic hydrolysis of Suwon poplar by the cellulase. Enzymatic hydrolysis of wood is the reaction to produce glucose from wood using enzyme which derives from microorganism. Glucose can be transferred easily to ethanol by fermentation. Ethanol is the starting material for producing acetone, butanol, citric acid and lactic acid. The mechanism of the enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose are reasonably explained in terms of the sequential action of three different types of enzymes, endo-cellulase, ex-cellulase, and $\beta$ -glucosidase. The goal of this work was to investigate the cellulose hydrolysis pretreated polar with various concentration NaOH, the crystallinity of cellulose, lignin contents and the degree of hydrolysis.
Algae is an abundant and potential fermentation substrate. The enzymatic hydrolysis of algae was investigated by pre-treating an alkaline hydrogen peroxide with commercial cellulase and viscozyme. Algae used in this study was the Ulva pertusa. The evaluated response was the yield of released glucose after the enzymatic hydrolysis. Alkaline hydrogen peroxide containing mixtures of 1 wt% hydrogen peroxide and 1~1.75 wt% sodium hydroxide was also used. The results show that the highest glucose conversion was obtained for Ulva pertusa using 5 wt% hydrogen peroxide at $60^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. The required amount of enzymes after the pre-treatment with alkaline hydrogen peroxide were reduced by far compared to that of untreated Ulva pertusa. Also, the amount of glucose that is released during the enzymatic hydrolysis was increased.
In this study, the effects of malonic acid-catalyzed pretreatment on the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis of red macro-algae Gracilaria verrucosa for production of biosugar (total reducing sugar) were investigated. In the hydrothermal pretreatment condition of 300 mM malonic acid, 1:20 solid-to-liquid ratio at $130^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, a 49.2% biosugar yield was achieved. Moreover, by subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis after pretreatment, maximum yield of 64.5% was achieved.
This study is to compare characteristics of saccharification reactions applying to enzymatic hydrolysis of pretreated fallen leaves for bio-ethanol production. It experimented pretreatment of acid, alkaline in the chemical. This experiment includes preteatment of acid and alkaline in chemical, soaking, shaking and autoclaving method, which were applied to biomass. In result, the glucose production from alkaline-NaOH method was 263 mg glucose/ g biomass comparing with them of acid-HCl method. Thus, alkaline-NaOH method is superior than the acid-HCl method for chemical preteatment of fallen leaves. Also, when various chemical treatments were compared, they were all. Based on the results of this study, we found that leaves, one of biomass, are possible in pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis process, and they are likely to affect bio-ethanol production in the future.
The Brown-algae polysaccharide consisting of alginate and laminaran is usable as high bio-ethanol production if hydrolyzed to monomer unit. The objective of this study is to produce bio-ethanol from brown-algae using enzymatic saccharification. Bio-ethanol was produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCCM 1129 and Pachysolen tannophilus KCTC 7937 strains. The substrate used Laminaria japonica, Sargassum fulvellum and Hizikia fusiformis. We isolated a new alginate lyase and laminaran lyase producing microorganism for hydrolysis of brown-algae from southern sea of Gijang. The reducing sugar was obtained 1.90 g/L from Laminarin japonica 20 g/L that used enzyme from Bacterium antarctica. In pretreatment of the most suitable brown-algae for ethanol production, ethanol concentration of 0.93 g/L and yield of 4.65% were obtained in condition of Laminaria japonica in medium.
