This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the behavior of eight a third scale columns made of high-strength concrete(HSC). The columns were subjected to constant axial load corresponding to target value of 30 percent of the column axial load capacity and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement(Ps=1.58, 2.25 %), tie configuration(hoop-type, cross-type, diagonal-type) and tie yield strength(fy=5,600, 7,950 kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$). Test results indicated that the flexural strength of all the columns did not exceed calculated flexural capacities based on the equivalent concrete stress block used in current design code. Columns with 42 percent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-99 were shown ductile behavior. With axial load of 30 percent of the axial load capacity, the use of high-strength steel as transverse reinforcement may lead to equal or higher ductility than would be achieved with low-strength steel.
This study examined the effect of transverse reinforcement and compressive stress on the shear friction performance at the shear interface intersecting two structural elements with various concrete types. From the prepared 12 push-off test specimens, various characteristics at the interface were measured as follows: crack propagation, shear load-relative slip relationship, initial shear cracking strength, ultimate shear friction strength, and shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement. The configuration of transverse reinforcement and compressive strength of concrete insignificantly influenced the amount of relative slippage at the shear friction plane. With the increase of applied compressive stress, the shear friction capacity of concrete tended to increase proportionally, whereas the shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement decreased, which was insignificantly affected by the configuration type of transverse reinforcement. The empirical equations of AASHTO-LRFD and Mattock underestimate the shear friction strength of concrete, whereas Hwang and Yang model provides better reliability, indicating that the mean and standard deviation of the ratios between measured shear strengths and predictions are 1.02 and 0.23, respectively.

This paper investigates the bond behavior of reinforced concrete beams having high-strength transverse reinforcement. A total of four reinforced concrete beams were tested in this study to estimate the bond capacity of the proposed U-shape reinforcement. The proposed U-shape reinforcement not only has a simple structure to install, but also can increase the bond capacity of reinforced concrete beams by controling bond cracks. This study follow the test method proposed by Ichinose to obtain the bond stress and the bond slip of the specimens. The main test parameters were the yield strength, ratio, and reinforcing types of transverse reinforcements. It was found that the proposed U-shape reinforcement was able to effectively improve the bond performance of reinforced concrete beams with high-strength transverse reinforcement.
An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse reinforcement in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns(260$\times$260$\times$1200 mm) were tested. Effects of main variables such as the concrete compressive strength, the tie configuration, the transverse reinforcement ratio, the tie spacing, and the spatting of the concrete cover were considered. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse reinforcement that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure There is a consistent decrease in deformability of column specimen with increasing concrete strength. Test results were compared with the previous confinement model such as modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi model. The comparison indicates that many previous models for confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.
A compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete according to current design codes. Including effects of transverse reinforcement, a compression splice becomes much longer than a tension splice. Effects of transverse reinforcement and bar size on strength and behavior of compression lap splice, which always exist in actual structures, have been investigated through experimental study of column tests with concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa. The results of the tests with bar diameters of 22 and 29 mm show that there is no size effect of bar diameter on compression lap splice. Bond strength of small bar diameter may increase. However, large diameters of re-bars are used in compression member and the size effect of re-bars does not have to be considered in compression lap splice. Confined specimens have twice of calculated strengths by current design codes. New design equations for the compression lap splice including the effects of transverse reinforcement are required for practical purpose of ultra-high strength concrete. End bearing is enhanced by transverse reinforcement placed at ends of splice not by transverse reinforcement within splice length. As more transverse reinforcement are placed, the stresses developed by bond linearly increase. The transverse reinforcements at ends of splice a little improve the strength by bond. Because the stresses developed by bond in compression splice with transverse reinforcement are nearly identical to or less than those in tension splice with same transverse reinforcement, strength increment of compression splice is attributed to end bearing only.

The nuclear structures are composed of large diameter bars over No.36. If the hooked bars are used for anchorage of large diameter bars, too long length of the tail extension of the hook plus bend create congestion and make an element difficult to construct. To address those problems, headed bars were developed. Provisions of ACI 318-08 specify the development length of headed bars and ignore the effect of transverse reinforcement based on the background researches. However, if headed bars are used at the cut-off or lap splice, longitudinal reinforcements, which are deformed in flexural members, induce tensile stress in cover concrete and increase the tensile force in the transverse reinforcement. The object of this research is to evaluate the effects of transverse reinforcement on the anchorage capacity of headed bar so anchorage test with variable of transverse rebar spacing was conducted. Specimens, which can consider the behavior at the cut-off, were tested. Test results show that failure of specimen without transverse reinforcement was sudden and brittle with concrete cover lifted and developed stress of headed bars was less than half of yield strength of headed bars. On the other hand, in the specimen with transverse reinforcement, transverse rebar directly resist the load of free-end so capacity of specimens highly increased.

This paper estimates the ductility of reinforced concrete columns according to configurations of transverse reinforcement. A total of 8 reinforced concrete columns were cast and tested in flexure. The test variables in this study were the configurations, yield strength, and amount of transverse reinforcement. The specimens had a cross-section of $250{\times}250mm$ and had a shear span-to-depth ratio of 4.1 to induce flexural failure. In the test, cyclic lateral load was applied to the specimens with a constant axial load. The experimental result indicated that the specimens with proposed configurations of transverse reinforcement showed higher ductility and energy dissipation capacity than the specimens with rectangular tie.
This study examined the feasibility of wire ropes as lateral reinforcement at the boundary element of heavyweight concrete shear walls. The spacing of the wire ropes varied from 60 mm to 120 mm at an interval of 30 mm, which produces the volumetric index of the lateral reinforcement of 0.126~0.234. The wire ropes were applied as a external hoop and/or internal cross-tie. Five shear wall specimens were tested to failure under constant axial load and cyclic lateral loads. Test results showed that with the increase of the volumetric index of the lateral reinforcement, the ductility of shear walls tended to increase, whereas the variation of flexural capacity of walls was minimal. The flexural capacity of shear walls tested was slightly higher than predictions determined from ACI 318-11 procedure. The displacement ductility ratio of shear walls with wire ropes was higher than that of shear wall with the conventional mild bar at the same the volumetric index of the lateral reinforcement. In particular, the shear walls with wire rope index of 0.233 achieved the curvature ductility ratio of more than 16 required for high-ductility design.
An experimental investigation was conducted to study the structural behavior of concrete columns confined with welded grids. The full-scale columns with different volumetric ratio, spacing and arrangement of welded reinforcement grids were tested under simulated seismic loading. The columns were subjected to constant axial compression of approximately 20% or 40% of their capacities accompanied by incrementally increasing lateral deformation reversals. The results indicate that the welded reinforcement grid can be used effectively as confinement reinforcement provided that the steel used, have sufficient ductility and the welding process employed does not alter the strength and elongation characteristics of steel. The grids improved the structural performance of columns, which developed lateral drift ratios in excess of 3% with the spacing and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement similar to those required by the ACI 318-95 Building Code. Drift capacity further increased when grids with larger number of cells were used. Furthermore, the use of grids reduced congesting of reinforcement while the dimensional accuracy provided perfect support to longitudinal reinforcement.
An experimental investigation was conducted to examine the hysteretic behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete tied columns. The purpose of this study is to investigate the safety of ultra-high strength concrete columns with 100 MPa compressive strength for the requirement of ACI provisions. Eight 1/3 scaled columns were fabricated to simulate an 1/2 story of actual structural members with the cross section $300{\times}300mm$ and the aspect ratio 4. The main variables are axial load ratio, configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. The results show that the deformability of columns are affected by the configurations and volumetric ratios of transverse reinforcement. Especially, it has been found that the behavior of columns are affected by axial load ratio rather than the amounts and the configurations of transverse reinforcement. Consequently, to secure the ductile behavior of 100 MPa ultra-high strength concrete columns, ACI provisions for the requirement of transverse steel may considered axial load level and the details of transverse reinforcement.
