  • Direct numerical simulations (DNS) is carried out to study fully-developed turbulent concentric annular pipe flow with two radius ratios at $Re_{Dh}\;=\;8900$. In case of $R_1/R_2\;=\;0.5$, the present result for the mean flow is in good agreement with the previous experimental data. Because of the transverse curvature effects, the distributions of mean flow and turbulent intensities are asymmetric in contrast to those of other fully-developed flows (channel and pipe flow). From the distributions of skewness of radial velocity fluctuations, it co be identified that all of the characteristics of channel, pipe and turbulent flow on a cylinder in axial flow can be appeared in concentric annular pipe flow.

  • Inertial migration phenomena of phytoplankton in pipe flows were investigated using a digital holography technique. As the Reynolds number increases, the microorganisms suspended in a pipe flow are focused at a certain radial position which is called equilibrium position or pinch point. In this study, the effects of the size of microorganism and Reynolds number in the range of 1 < Re < 78 on the inertial migration were investigated and the results are compared with those for solid particles under similar experimental conditions. As a result, the equilibrium position for the elastic microorganisms is not so distinct, compared to the solid particles. This results from deformation of elastic body shape caused by shear-gradient of surrounding flow.

  • In the present work, we analyze theoretically the flow of magnetic fluids in a circular pipe with longitudinal magnetic field. We used governing equations induced Shliomis and Polar theory of Eringen. Using theoretical equations and distributions for the velocity, vorticity and angular velocity as the magnetic response, it is shown that magnetic fluid flow is non-Newtonian fluid. We investigate dynamic characteristic of magnetic fluid by comparing longitudinal magnetic field with transverse magnetic field. And, the limits, influence magnetic fluid, of the intensity of the magnetic field with polar, size and magnetic effect parameters are shown.

  • The local hydraulic characteristics in a single phase flow of a 6$\times$6 rod bundle with neighboring different spacer grids were measured by using a LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimeter) system. 6$\times$6 rod bundle is formed by two 3$\times$6 rod bundles with different spacer grids. The objective of this study in a rod bundle is to investigate the thermal-hydraulic interactions between different spacer grids with different configurations and resistance. By using a LDV system, the velocity and turbulent intensity in axial and horizontal directions ore measured. Pressure drop measurements ore also performed to evaluate the loss coefficient for the spacer grid and the friction factor for rod bundles. Implications concerning thermal mining due to spacer grids were investigated based on the hydraulic test results. Swirl factor, which is assumed as a qualitative criteria for DNB(departure from nucleate boiling), was defined and estimated from the horizontal velocity result.

  • The present study has been performed to investigate the influences of rectangular fins on heat transfer in an impingement/effusion cooling system with crossflow. To simulate the impingement/effusion cooling system with initial crossflow, two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of the hole diameter. The crossflow passes between the plates, and various rectangular fins are installed on the plates. Reynolds number based on the hole diameter is fixed to 10,000 and the flow rate of crossflow is changed from 0.5 to 1.5 times of that of the impinging jet. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to obtain the heat/mass transfer coefficients on the effusion plate. Also to analyze the flow characteristics, a numerical calculation is performed. When rectangular fins are installed, the flow and heat transfer pattern is changed greatly from the case without fins. In the injection hole region, the jet impinges on effusion plate without deflection and wall jet spreads symmetrically. In the effusion region, the crossflow accelerates due to the decrease of cross-sectional area in the channel. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients are enhanced significantly compared to the case without fins. As the blowing ratio increases, the effect of rectangular fins against the crossflow becomes more significant and then the higher average heat/mass transfer coefficients are obtained than the case without fins. However, the increase of blockage effect gives more pressure loss in the channel.

  • This study attempts to simulate the structure of a woody leaf netted venation system by using topology optimization techniques. Based on finite element method (FEM) analysis of an incompressible fluid, a topology optimal design is applied to those woody leaf netted venation models. To solve the transverse shear locking problem of a thin plate caused by the Mindlin-Reissner plate model where a leaf netted venation is assumed to be a thin plate, a P1-nonconforming element and selective reduced integration are employed. Topology optimal design is applied to multiple physical domains. Combined with the Darcy-Stokes flow problems and extended to the optimal design of fluid channels, the multiple physical models of the flow system are analyzed and venation patterns of leafs are simulated. The calculated optimal shapes are compared with the natural shapes of woody leaf venation patterns. This interdisciplinary approach may improve our understanding of the leaf venation system.

  • The present study investigates to improve the film cooling performance on the vane endwall. Numerical simulation was conducted to analyze film cooling characteristics on the vane endwall. Six different hole arrangements were designed considering flow characteristics on the endwall. The results showed that the film cooling effectiveness was low on the pressure side and nozzle throat in the base case, because coolant was deflected from the pressure side to the suction side. On the other hand, when the holes were installed near the pressure side, the film cooling effectiveness was enhanced on the pressure side and nozzle throat, because the coolant was less affected by cross flow. Therefore, the film cooling effectiveness increases about 16% compared to the base hole arrangement.

  • Dynamics of the river plume is a very complicated non-linear problem with the free boundary changing in time and space. Mixing with the ambient water through the boundary makes the problem more complicated. In this paper we reduced 3-dimensional problem into 1-dimensional one by using the integral analysis method. Basic equations have been integrated over the lateral and vertical variations. For these integrations we adopted the well-established assumption that the flow-axis component of plume velocity and the density difference of the plume with the ambient water have Gaussian distributions in directions which are perpendicular to the flow-axis of the plume. We also used the result of our previous study on the lateral spreading velocity of the plume derived under the same assumption. And entrainment was included as a mixing process. The resultant 1-dimensional equations were solved by Runge-Kutta numerical method. Consequently, comparatively easy method of numerical analysis is presented for the 3-dimensional river plume. The method can also be used for the analysis of the thermal plume of cooling water of power plants.
