  • This study explored types of failure encountered by elementary school students during the engineering design process and how they coped with them. To achieve this goal, we developed and taught engineering design lessons on water shortages to four fourth-grade classes, observing and interviewing seven focus groups. Our analysis revealed that student failures can be categorized into two main types: those caused by cognitive factors and those influenced by environmental factors. While cognitive failures are typically within students' control, environmental factors are beyond their reach. Our findings also showed that students tended to avoid discussing the root causes of failure and instead relied on ad hoc solutions. Additionally, some students lowered their expectations for success to avoid failure. Based on our findings, we offer practical recommendations for educators to help students learn from their failures in a constructive manner.

  • This study explored the participant roles and the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between interpersonal behavior characteristics and bullying/victimization. The subjects were 4th and 5th grade children and instruments were the Participant Roles Scale, Self-Report Coping Scale, Teenage Inventory of Social Skills, and Social Anxiety/Avoidance. They were contacted again one year later. In the distribution of participant roles at Time 1, defender of the victim was highest, then outsider; at Time 2 outsider was the highest and then defender. There was a tendency of gender difference in distribution of participant roles only at Time 1. Males were more in the group of reinforcer; females were more in the group of defender and victim. There were high positive correlations among bully/reinforcer/assistant scores. In the concurrent view, children who used approach coping strategies and showed higher social skills were more likely to be defender. Children who had lower social skills and higher social anxiety and social avoidance were more likely to be victim. In the longitudinal view, children who had developed higher social skills were more likely to be defender. Children who had employed less approach coping strategies and had showed lower social skills and higher social avoidance were more likely to be victim.

  • If an accident vehicle propagates emergency messages to other vehicles close to it, the other drivers may realize and avoid the accident spot. In this letter, we propose a broadcast scheme to propagate emergency messages fast in urban VANETs (Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks) with the help of GPS (Global Position System). In our scheme, a transmitting vehicle chooses the farthest node as the next relay vehicle to propagate emergency messages. And, we suggest an algorithm for intersection recognition and SCF (Store-Carry-Forward) task by taking advantage of periodic hello packets to reduce the propagation time and enhance the delivery ratio.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of life stress, depression, and drinking motives on problem drinking among college students. The subjects were 249 college students and data were collected through a self-reported structured questionnaire from Nov to Dec 2016. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The findings showed that drinking motives were the biggest factor influencing their problem drinking with coping, social, enhancement and conformity motives exerting special effects on it. As for correlations with problem drinking, interpersonal and ongoing task stress of life stress had positive correlations with problem drinking. Coping, social, enhancement, and conformity motives also had positive relations with problem drinking. Drinking motives had critical effects on the problem drinking of college students with coping, social, and enhancement motives strongly impacting on it. The findings necessitate examining the drinking motives of college students to make them choose to drink including negative emotions, social activities, and gatherings in order to prevent their problem drinking. These factors could explain 33% of the problem drinking. It is also required to develop methods for them to utilize resources other than drinking and run drinking education and temperance programs at the school level.

  • Objectives : This study was aimed to investigate stress and coping strategy in the families of schizophrenic patient, and changes of knowledge, stress and coping strategy after brief program of family education compared with control group Methods : The education group consisted of twenty four people who were families with schizophrenic patients and attended the brief program of family education. The control group consisted of twenty two people with schizophrenic inpatients. Self-report questionnaires such as Family Coping Questionnaire(FCQ), Patient Rejection Scale(PRS), Worry Questionnaire, Knowledge Questionnaire, Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) were administered to the education group and the control group, twice at the pre-test and post-test. Results : 1) In the education group, scores of worry questionnaire, BDI and STAI-S at the post-test were significantly lower than those at the pre-test. Social interests score of FCQ and knowledge questionnaire score at the post-test were significantly higher than those at the pre-test. In FCQ factors, social interests associated with avoidance strategy score at the post-test was significantly higher than that at the pre-test. However, in the control group, there was no significant difference in all questionnaires. 2) In the education group, significant positive correlation existed between calculated differences of worry questionnaire and STAI-S, and between worry questionnaire and STAI-T, whereas significant negative correlation existed between positive communication of FCQ and PRS, and between knowledge questionnaire and STAI-S. In the control group, significant negative correlation existed between information of FCQ and PRS, and between positive communication of FCQ and PRS. 3) In the education group, significant positive correlation existed between calculated differences of worry questionnaire and age of patient, whereas significant negative correlation existed between knowledge questionnaire and duration of illness. However, in the control group, there was no significant correlation. Conclusion : The brief program of family education was effective in increasing knowledge about schizophrenia, decreasing worry and anxiety about the patients in families with schizophrenic patient. In the education group as knowledge about schizophrenia increased, anxiety about schizophrenic patient decreased, but there was no significant correlation in the control group. As relative's rejection feeling about schizophrenic patient decreased, positive communication strategy increased in both groups. However, the control group was more affected by rejection feeling than the education group.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate families' responses and attitudes and the experiences of Korean LGBT individuals after revealing their sexual identity and sexual orientation and to determine how families' attitudes affected the mental health of these individuals. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were performed with 12 male and female LGBT participants, ranging from 19-30 years of age, who resided in Seoul and metropolitan areas, and reported coming out to or being outed by their families. One-to-one interviews were carried out using semi-structured questions, and the data from the interviews were analyzed using consensual qualitative research (CQR). Most of the families had very negative responses and attitudes to the participants coming out and exhibited rejection or avoidant attitudes; only a few of the families responded with receptive attitudes. As a result, the LGBT participants reacted with friction and coping behaviors, such as persuasion, participation in professional counseling, abandonment or avoidance, and running away from home. Most of the effects of the families' attitudes on the participants were negative psychological effects, such as anger, sadness, a sense of alienation, depression, anxiety, fear, trauma, helplessness, lowered self-esteem, alcohol dependence, and suicidal ideation and attempt, while receptive attitudes provided a sense of stability. For all participants, they reported that they were more likely to be hurt by their families' negative attitudes than by social attitudes. This study is significant because it provides framework for specifying families' attitudes and LGBT individuals' experiences after coming out in Korean society. It also outlines LGBT individuals' coping behaviors, psychological difficulties, and the process of coming out and provides suggestions for individuals to overcome. The results are expected to help counselors create practical strategies to better understand LGBT individuals and the psychological difficulties they may experience and provide proper interventions while counseling both the individual and the family.

  • This study aims to identify work conflicts in Korean socio-cultural context by applying grounded theory. Survey has been conducted through in-depth interviews with 11 different employees from various occupational categories. Data collected from the survey were then analyzed based on the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin (1998), thus resulted in a paradigm model consisting of 31 categories, 63 subcategories, and 100 concepts by open coding. Axial coding was then conducted and the results were as follows. The causal condition was the 'character of an opponent'. Contextual conditions which affect the causal condition were 'situational characteristics', 'character of an opponent', 'character of oneself', and their 'mutuality'. 'Negative feeling' was the central phenomena of work conflict and action/interaction strategies were verified to be 'avoidance', 'expression', 'effort toward solving problems' and 'increasing conflict'. Intervening conditions were 'interrelation', 'intervention', and 'group/task characteristics'. The consequences were organized as 'conflict continuance', 'personnel change' and 'positive effect'. Through selective coding, 'managing with the conflict' was derived as core-category and three different types of management were classified. Ultimately, this study shows how employees work in Korea experience the work conflicts and what kinds of socio-cultural factors have influence on the work conflicts, which can supplement previous inadequate empirical research. Also, this study can provide implications and suggestions as a fundamental integrated model for the future empirical research on work conflicts.
