Effects of Food Material Water Extracts on Content of Testosterone and Dihydrotestosteron in Serum and Skin of Rat (식품소재 물 추출물이 쥐 혈청과 피부의 Testosterone 및 Dihydrotestosteron 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • Effect of mixture of food material water extracts(modouri) composed of Job's tears, maize, buckwheat Japanese mushroom, lovage, licorice and jujube(13 : 50 : 15 : 2 : 5 : 5 : 5, v/v)] on the content of testosterone(T) and dihydrotestosterone(DHT), biochemical and histological changes of rat were investigated. Animal experiments(30 rats) were divided into 3 experimental groups(control, modouri and propecia). The summarized results were as follows: Activities of GOT, GPT, ALP, ${\gamma}$-GTP and content of total cholesterol and total lipid are normal in modouri group. Therefore modouri does not give rise to any damage in the liver. Also in the histological view, modouri does not have any hepatotoxic effect and increase the number of hair folicle. Total(T+DHT) and DHT content in rat serum and skin are significantly decrease in modouri group compare to the control but there is not any significant difference with propecia.

A Study on the Improvement of Strength in NiO-YSZ Porous Anode Material for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC용 다공성 NiO-YSZ 음극소재의 강도향상에 관한 연구)

  • We controlled the amount of Y$_2$O$_3$additives, 8 mol% and 10 mol%, and the type of carbon pore former, activated carbon and carbon black, to improve the strength of porous NiO-YSZ anode materials for solid oxide fuel ceil. The 3-point flexural strength, porosity and electrical conductivity were evaluated. As a result, the strength of anode materials with the addition of carbon black was markedly improved. The strength of NiO-10 mol%YSZ sintered at relatively higher temperature was higher than that of NiO-8 mol%YSZ materials. The electrical conductivity of NiO-10 mol%YSZ with carbon black was evaluated as much as 10$^2$∼10$^3$S/cm at 700$^{\circ}C$∼1000$^{\circ}C$ in reducing atmosphere.

Enhancement of Immune Activity of Spirulina maxima by Low Temperature Ultrasonification Extraction (저온 초음파 추출에 의한 Spirulina maxima 면역활성 증진)

  • The marine microalga Spirulina maxima was extracted using water or ethanol at 100 or $80^{\circ}C$ and by ultrasonification in water at $60^{\circ}C$. The ultrasonification technique generated the highest yield (19.8%). To be therapeutically useful, the extraction should yield a product with low cytotoxicity and high immunity against skin infections. The cytotoxicity of all extracts (1.0 mg/mL) was below 25%. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of the extract generated by ultrasonification was 5%. Extracts prepared in the described manners could inhibit hyaluronidase activity by up to 40% compared to the control. Increased growth of human B, T and NK cells and an increase in cytokine secretion were observed, confirming the interrelationship between both human immune and skin immune activity. The extract prepared by ultrasonification increased the growth of human B, T and NK cells up to $10.3{\times}10^4$ cells/mL, $11.3{\times}10^4$ cells/mL and $19.1{\times}10^4$ cells/mL, respectively. The extract prepared by ultrasonification also greatly increased the secretion of both IL-6 and $TNF-{\alpha}$. Moreover, it was estimated that protein, Na and leucine occupy a high ratio. Accordingly, this study has confirmed that extracts prepared as described have the potential to effectively increase skin immunity.

Assessment of the possibility as Cosmetics Materials by Brown algae from Jeju Island Using Supercritical Fluid System (초임계 유체 기술을 이용한 제주산 갈조류의 화장품 소재로서의 가능성 평가)

  • Although various biological extracts derived from the resources from Jeju are currently being developed for cosmetic materials, few studies using Brown algae from Jeju have been conducted. This study identified materials with high antioxidant levels and examined their whitening effects to assess their feasibility as potential cosmetic resources. Brown algae from Jeju (Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar, Laminaria japonica, Ecklonia cava, Hizikia fusiforme (Harvey) Okamura (HF), and Sargassum fulvellum (Turner) C. Agardh (SF) were processed using a supercritical fluid system at 50℃ and 400 bar, and their total phenol content, antioxidant activity, tyrosinase inhibition, and primary skin irritation were measured. Of all the samples, only SF using the supercritical fluid system (SFS) displayed concentration-dependent behavior for the total phenol content (p<0.05). Among the samples, the antioxidant activity of SFS was significantly higher (p<0.05) and the one increased at higher concentrations (p<0.05). On the other hand, tyrosinase was inhibited to a greater extent with HF than the others. The primary skin irritation tests showed that none of the samples were skin irritants. This study confirmed the feasibility of using Phaeophyceae from Jeju as potential cosmetic materials, where the samples can be selected and utilized based on the required physicochemical properties.

The Anti-oxidant and Anti-microbial Activities of Purified Syringin from Cortex Fraxini (진피로부터 정제한 Syringin의 항산화 및 항균 활성)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the anti-oxidant and anti-microbial activity of syringin isolated from Cortex Fraxini to investigate their potential for use as safe natural compounds. Purified syringin was dissolved in distilled water for each concentration and used in each experiment. Syringin showed higher 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging than butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) at a concentration of 50 ㎍/ml. In 2,2'-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging, activity was similar to that of BHT at all concentrations. In antioxidant protection factor measurement, activity of syringin slightly increased as the concentration increased, as did the inhibitory effect of thiobarbutric acid reactive substances. In evaluating anti-microbial activity, the clear zones of Listeria monocytogenes KCTC 13064, Staphylococcus aureus KCTC 1916, Escherichia coli KCTC 2571, and Helicobacter pylori HPKCTC B0150 at a concentration of 200 ㎍/ml were found to be 17.8 mm, 20.45 mm, 17.05 mm, and 16.8 mm, respectively, but no clear zone was observed in the case of Candida albicans ATCC 10231. The activity against water-soluble antioxidants was therefore superior to that against lipid-soluble antioxidants. Anti-microbial activity was examined by inhibiting growth against gram-positive and -negative strains, and anti-fungal activity was not observed. Based on the results of this study, syringin has possible applications as a natural anti-oxidant and anti-microbial material.

Antibacterial Activities of Trace Elements in Combination with Food Additives (미량원소 강화 식품소재의 항균효과)

  • Antibacterial activities of the trace elements in combination with the food additives were measured against 6 kinds of food-borne microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas fluorescens. The difference of antibacterial activity was not shown among the kinds of food additives, such as dextrin, gelatin and collagen. Zn and Ge in combination with food additives had strong antibacterial effect. Especially, $1\%$ zinc acetate in combination with $1\%$ gelatin was more effective against P. fluorescens and S. aureus than against Bacillus sp., E. coli and V. parahaemolyticus. Minimum inhibitory concentration of zinc acetate in combination with $1\%$ gelatin appeared to be 0.5 mg/mL on S. aureus and P. fluorescens, and 1.0 mg/mL on E. coli, V. parahaemolyticus, B. cereus and B. subtilis. Minimum bactericidal concentration of zinc acetate in combination with $1\%$ gelatin appeared to be 0.5 mg/mL on P. fluorescens and 1.0 mg/mL on E. coli, V. parahaemolyticus, S. aureus, B. cereus and B. subtilis. The zinc acetate in combination with gelatin showed stronger inhibitory effect in acidic range below pH 6.0, and remained active even after heat treatment at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min. In comparison with control, the viable cell counts of fish pastes, which were coated with the solution containing both $1\%$ zinc acetate and $3\%$ gelatin, were decreased by more than 100-fold until the storage of 7 days at $10^{\circ}C$. The results indicate that the combined use of zinc acetate and some food additives could prolong the shelf life of fish pastes by 8 days or more at $10^{\circ}C$.

Natural herbal extract complex induces the degradation of alcohol and acetaldehyde and reduces the breath alcohol concentration (천연소재복합물의 알코올 및 아세트알데히드 분해활성 및 호기중 알코올 농도 감소)

  • This study is purposed to check up the natural 12 kinds of herbal extracts suitable for hangover and based on the results of contents of phenolic compounds, ABTS radical scavenging activity, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). Selected 8 kinds of herbal extracts are blended according to the efficacy and the pearson's correlation between each content and activity. C. sinensis var. sinensis, P. densiflora Gnarl and P. lobata Ohwi showed excellent ADH activity, P. lobata Ohwi had a strong correlation between the content and efficacy, and C. sinensis var. sinensis, P. densiflora Gnarl had a negative correlation. Through the ADH and ALDH activity test of F.1 to F.7, the F.7 showed the highest synergic effect and selected as an optimal formulation. F.7 intake-group, the breath alcohol concentration was significantly reduced to 58% after 30 minutes and 27% after 120 minutes, compared to right after alcohol consumption. After alcohol consumption, there was a significant improvement effect (p<0.05) in tired and thirst in the intake group compared to the non-intake group.

  • 마그네슘 합금은 낮은 비중의 경량화 금속 소재이며, 주로 주조재의 형태로 상당한 기간 활용되어 왔으며, 최근 포스코에서 AZ31B 합금으로 판재를 생산하면서 판재상의 마그네슘 소재의 응용이 본격화되고 있다. 마그네슘 합금은 화학적 활성이 커서 내식성 확보를 위한 표면처리가 필수적이며, 내식성의 확보가 상업적 적용을 위하여 필수적이다. 기존의 마그네슘 합금의 표면처리 방법은 주로 AZ91D 다이캐스팅재에 집중되어 왔으며, 포스코에서 생산되는 AZ31B 스트립 캐스팅재등 새롭게 시장에 소개되는 소재에 대해서는 새롭게 표면처리 공정이 개발되어야 한다. 본 발표에서는 마그네슘 합금 소재를 표면처리함에 있어서 소재의 전처리 공정의 중요성에 대하여 논하고자 한다.

Rutin Suppresses Neoplastic Cell Transformation by Inhibiting ERK and JNK Signaling Pathways (Rutin의 ERK 및 JNK 신호전달체계 억제를 통한 암예방 효능)

  • Rutin is a well-known flavonoid found in buckwheat. Recent studies have demonstrated that the biological actions of rutin include anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects, but the underlying molecular mechanisms of these actions are not yet fully understood. Neoplastic cell transformation is considered a major event that contributes to carcinogenesis, and the present study aimed to determine whether rutin would exert anti-tumor effects via the results suggest that rutin exerted a potent inhibitory influence on the molecular activity of the MEK/ERK and MKK4/JNK pathways and strongly attenuated EGF-induced neoplastic cell transformation. These findings provide insight into the biological actions of rutin and the molecular basis for the development of new chemoprotective agents.

A Study of Physiological Activities for Cosmeceutical Ingredient from Fermented Aroniamelanocarpa Extract (화장품 소재로서 아로니아 발효추출물의 생리활성 연구)

  • Due to the unique sourness and sweet taste of Aronia, it is necessary to develop it for processing rather than raw. The antioxidant activity and cytotoxin about the aronia powder fermentation extract using lactobacillus are verified. In the case of total polyphenol content, the content of non-fermented extract was 32.15 ㎍/mg fermentation extract, 43.08 ㎍/mg after fermentation, and the flavonoid content was 0.47 ㎍/mg in non-fermented extract and 0.44 ㎍/mg in fermented extract, which was similar to that of non-fermented extract. In the DPPH radical inhibition assay, 77.5% of the non-fermented extract and 89.1% of the fermented extract showed better activity than the non-fermented extract. Nitric oxide (NO) measurement showed a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect. From the above results, it was confirmed that the fermentation of Aronia powder could be utilized based on some antioxidant activities and the possibility of using it as a vegetable extract and fermented cosmetic material in the future.
