  • Once a site is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), serious environmental and human health risks are inevitable. Therefore, innovative but economical in situ remediation technologies must be immediately applied to the contaminated site. Recently, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nano-ZVI) particles have successfully been applied for the dechlorination of various chlorinated organic compounds like TCE, PCE and DDT, and they are considered to be environmentally safe due to the high abundance of iron in the earth's crust. Nano-ZVIs are much more reactive than granular ones, but tend to agglomerate due to their high surface energy and magnetic properties. In order to prevent them from being agglomerated toward larger particles, TiO2 was used as a support to immobilize the nano-ZVI particles as much as possible. 10wt% ZVI/TiO2 was prepared by adding NaBH4 slowly into an FeSO4/TiO2 aqueous slurry. In spite of their non-uniformity in size, the nano-ZVI particles were quite successfully dispersed onto the exterior surface of a non-porous TiO2 powder. The ZVI/TiO2 was then employed to degrade Aroclor 1242, a kind of PCBs standard, in spiked soil, and its reactivity towards the degradation of Aroclor 1242 was investigated. The fabricated ZVI/TiO2 degraded Aroclor 1242 in soil quite effectively, but the creation of remaining dechlorinated compounds, possibly high molecular weight hydrocarbons, in the soil was unavoidable.

  • A virtual team is defined a group of people that use electronic communications for some or all of their interactions with other team members. Because team members of a virtual team are physically and temporally distributed, a team's transactive memory system(TMS) is considered to be crucial for the team's effectiveness and performance. TMS refers to a set of individual memory systems which integrate knowledge possessed by particular members through a shared awareness of who knows what. This paper seeks to understand (1) how a virtual team's TMS influences team performance, and (2) what factors contribute to developing the team's TMS. Given these purposes, through the extensive literature review, we first identified components and antecedents to develop a theoretical model that predicts a virtual team's performance. Using the survey data gathered from 172 virtual teams, this study found that expertise location, coordination, and cognition-based trust which were proposed as three components of TMS positively influenced a virtual team's performance. Furthermore, this study uncovered that perceived media richness, network tie strength, and shared norms significantly influenced the components of TMS, while geographical dispersion did not exert any significant influence on TMS.

  • Previous research found that merely touching an object can create psychological ownership and the endowment effect. It was also found that just imagining touching an object without actually touching the object can make the same effect on psychological ownership. Prior research on haptic imagery examined the effect of haptic imagery induced by direct instruction of imaging on psychological ownership. We investigate a new method which can induce the haptic imagery in a more natural way than direct instruction of imaging. We manipulated imagery conditions such as visual-haptic congruence multimodal cue, visual-haptic incongruent multimodal cue, direct instruction condition and control condition, and examined the effects on imagery vividness, feeling of physical control, perceived ownership, and purchase intention. We conducted the experiment on 140 undergraduate students and our results showed that visual-haptic congruence multimodal cue condition is more effective than direct instruction of haptic imagery while visual-haptic incongruence multimodal cue condition is not effective. Our study extends prior haptic imagery research by making important marketing implications for online retailing.

  • After detailed geological mapping, structural and fracture-density data were collected and analyzed in the vicinity of Cheonseong and Jeongjok Mts., Gyeongsangnam-do. A extensive dextral strike-slip fault (Beopgi Fault) Parallel to Yangsan and Dongrae Faults, a dextral-transtensional-NW fault, and a few intermittent faults have been found in the study area. Based on strike and frequency, fracture system has been divided into three sets such as NNE-trending J1 ($NS-40^{\circ}E$), WNW-trending J2 ($N50^{\circ}-80^{\circ}W$), and ENE-trending J3 ($N60^{\circ}-90^{\circ}E$). According to analysis of fracture density, it is revealed as follows: (a) Jl is the combination of Y-, P-, and R-shear fractures due to the dextral strike-slip of the Beopgi Fault. (b) J2 is the preexisted fracture zone conducting the intrusion of granite. Two tensional fractures dipping to NNE and SSW respectively have been induced by intrusion of granite and followed crustal uplift. (c) J3 is the tensional fracture developed between Yangsan and Dongrae Faults having NNE trend and dextral strike-slip sense. This study aims to reduce environmental impact and insure stability of underground facilities and tunnels.

  • The zooplankton community of Lake Paldang, Korea, was investigated on a weekly basis from 2004 to 2006. The seasonal succession of zooplankton community structure was influenced by hydrological factors such as rainfall pattern and efflux in Lake Paldang. According to the monsoon climate, spring, fall and winter had reduced precipitation, so that zooplankton dynamics of the lake showed a typical succession pattern. In spring, small sized and faster growing rotifera rapidly increased, and copepods and cladocera noticeably increased thereafter. Rotifera dominated the zooplankton community, occupying more than 90% of total zooplankton abundance. Among rotifera, Keratella cochlearis was extremely dominant in spring. Copepoda were mainly present as Copepodid and Nauplius. Among cladoceran species, Bosmina longirostris was dominant. In summer, during the rainy season, zooplankton were flushed out by an associated dam. After the rainy season, rotifera increased rapidly when the water column of the lake was stable. During the fall, zooplankton abundance gradually reduced in accordance with decreasing water temperature. However, the occupation rate of copepod (Copepodid, Nauplius) increased relatively. Zooplankton dynamics were influenced by meteorological changes and hydraulic-hydrological factors, because Lake Paldang is a completely closed ecosystem.

  • Recently, in Korea, financial institutions such as banks are most severely affected by the universalization of the Internet and smartphones. On the other hand, the use of online systems by financial institutions keeps increasing; the convenience of online services has a significant influence on the attraction and the retention of financial customers; consumer needs are also diversely expressed. This paper deduces from the precedent researches a mechanism that online financial system enhances the trust of customers -the medium of the online system and other customers- and its perceived easiness affects its perceived effectiveness and then all these internal variables induce satisfaction. Plus, this paper aims at verification of the hypothesis in terms of an extended technology acceptance model, based on the hypothesis that word of mouth and repurchase are significantly linked to this mechanism. Through this study, the researchers tried to check how the online service quality and emotional factors of financial institutions affect the users in accordance with the trend of changes in the service usage method of financial institutions, and confirmed that the hypothesis was not rejected.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine changes in the accuracy and range of produced pitch in children with cochlear implants (CI) after an interval-based singing program. A total of three children with CIs aged 5 received twelve 35-minute individual sessions two to three times per week. The interval-based singing program was composed with third, fifth, and eighth intervals and implemented pitch discrimination, pitch imitation, and singing songs with target intervals in a sequence. At pretest and posttest, the changes in accuracy of pitch production during pitch imitation and singing were measured. The results demonstrated that all participants showed improvement in pitch accuracy and produced the target notes with great similarity to the expected pitches in the original song. The range of produced pitch also increased after the program. The results indicate that sequential trials to imitate pitches in a multisensory environment to facilitate the processing of pitch information may reflect how this population perceives pitch information and assist children with CIs to improve their pitch accuracy.

  • In the digital media environment, individuals' information behavior about donation has been more interactive than ever. This study tried to figure out which factors impact communicative actions, based on the situational theory of problem solving(STOPS) in the donation situation for children with a rare incurable disease. This study tried to figure out the instrumental role of communicative action in donation situation. The findings from the survey(N=524) revealed that problem recognition and involvement recognition have a positive influence on a situational motivation, while constraint recognition had a negative influence. A referent criterion and a situational motivation have a positive influence on communicative actions. Also, a perceived moral obligation and a anticipated guilt have additional explanation of situational motivation for children with a rare incurable disease.
