The purpose of this study is to analyze the opinions of students by using the text mining to the good points and improvements among the descriptive course evaluation written by the students who participated in the university chemistry laboratory class, and to derive the improvement for the class. We analyzed the frequency of occurrence, co-occurrence and network of key words. As a result of the study, in the network of good points in the class, the most frequent mentions were made between class and professor, along with explanation, understanding, student, passion, fun, TA, experiment, help, etc. In the network of improvements in the class, the most frequent mentions were made between class and student, along with professor, content, explanation, exam, wish, experiment, understanding, difficult, thought, problem, etc. In other words, the students suggested the opinion that the contents of the class were well understood and that they felt fun and satisfied with the experimental process due to 'easy and detailed explanation' and 'TA's assistance' as good points of the class. On the other hand, the students suggested the negative opinions that the understanding and concentration in the class was decreased due to 'difficulty of content and exam', 'excessive assignments', and 'class environment' as improvements of the class.

This study is to develope the performance scoring rubrics for the inquiry-based experiments of general chemistry course in the college of education. Two types of analytic scoring rubrics have been developed for nine different experiments. The first one is to assess scientific process skills from the written experimental reports. These analytic scoring rubrics include seven process skills selected from the Lawson's 'creative and critical thinking skills' and other known process skills. The second one is to assess the individual manipulative skills and experimental attitudes through direct observations by the teacher. The content validity of all scoring rubrics was testified by six science educators. Also the inter-scorer reliability of analytic scoring rubrics administered on the students' experimental reports was examined. The correlation coefficient between the scores obtained from the experiments and those of the written test for theoretical knowledges was found to be r=.663(p <.01). From the variance($r^2$=.440), we would say indirectly that the 56% of this experimental assessment does not overlap with the theoretical knowledges test and assesses students' science process skills, manipulative skills, and attitudes.
Using interesting video clips corresponding to lesson subjects for students who favour visual representation is one of the good methods to enhance students' preference for science class. There are many moving picture web sites to get video clips easily via internet and 'YouTube' is very popular and one of the largest reservoir. In this study, every student in the 'Chemistry I' class, which is a class for 11th grade, was requested to search a video clip corresponding to lesson subjects and to make a presentation in the class. After 1st semester, students' response about the class using YouTube was examined by survey. As a result, students preferred and were interested in the class using YouTube than class centered on textbook. And students preferred YouTube clips showing unusual experiments that were related with contents of subject. In addition, experiments and watching their real phenomena were an interesting factor and helpful factor of learning chemistry in YouTube video clips, respectively. However, translation of English used in the video clips seemed to be a difficult part for students.
In this study, science teachers' NOS lessons were observed and the characteristics of the lessons were analyzed. Three science teachers who taught NOS in the 'Science Inquiry Experiment' developed under the 2015 revised curriculum participated in the study. Their NOS lessons were observed and interviews were conducted before and after lessons. The collected data were analyzed using analytical induction and constant comparative method. The analyses of the result revealed the teachers' naive views on NOS were also revealed during the lessons. There were some cases where they showed naive views during the lessons even if they showed informed views in the interviews. Although the domains of NOS taught by them were diverse, all of them taught 'tentativeness' and considered this an important goal. They tended to teach NOS with content related with their major, and teaching NOS was found to be deeply related to their major. In the activity where students learn NOS by inferring the unknown object, teachers disclosed the unknown object, which is unlike the rule of the activity. They thought that could help students' learning. At last, although they emphasized teaching NOS, they either did not assess NOS or assessed NOS in a limited way. Based on the results, some directions for teacher education and follow-up study are suggested.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of student assessment activities on claim and evidence formation in argument-based inquiry (ABI) for high school students. The participants of the study were 166 grade 10 students from six different classes in the same high school. The experimental group (84 students) was taught Argument-Based Inquiry with students' self and peer assessment activities. The comparative group (82 students) was taught without the activities. Over one semester students participated in five ABI programs that we developed. According to the analysis of the claim and evidence from groups, the experimental group had a significantly higher mean score than the comparative group. The result of analysis of students' assessment in the experimental group, the frequency about accurate and sufficient evidence revealed to be high and students assessed whether peers' claims fit with the evidence and whether peers' explanations of the evidence's validity was sufficient. Students' answers in the survey and interviews showed that the students though they could improve the accuracy of their ideas, appropriateness of their evidence, and the method of presenting evidence based on the assessment results.
In this study, we investigated pre-service science teachers' NOS-PCK by analyzing their NOS lesson planning and demonstration. Four pre-service science teachers participated in the study. They planned and demonstrated NOS lessons in the context of 'Science Inquiry Experiment' developed under the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. Their lessons were observed. All of the teaching-learning materials were collected, and semi-structured interviews were also conducted. The analyses of the result revealed that pre-service teachers mainly referred to the curriculum and textbooks when selecting the NOS learning objectives. However, they felt difficulty because the curriculum and textbooks did not clearly present the NOS to be dealt. Although all of them took explicit approaches, there were not many open and divergent reflective approaches. In addition, they expected that high school students would consider scientific knowledge absolute and would have negative perceptions of NOS lessons. They rarely assessed students' NOS learning, and were reluctant to assess. Finally, most of them had a negative perception that learning NOS is not necessary for all students. On the bases of the results, educational implications for improving the expertise of pre-service science teachers in NOS lessons were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of student-led assessment on achievement emotions and science concept understanding in middle school science classes. For this purpose, 4 of the 7 classes in the third grade of mid- dle school in small and medium-sized cities were selected as the experimental group and conducted student-led assessment, while the comparative group (3 classes) conducted teacher-led assessment. The student-led assessment consisted of 4 stages in which learners took initiative to set learning goals and develop assessment criteria, conduct self assessment and peer assess- ment, and carry out seven assessment activities. Student-led assessment was effective in improving positive achievement emotions and relieving negative achievement emotions and increasing students' science concept understanding in middle school students. Students perform student-led assessment, grasp their reach, and repeatedly go through reflective thinking to compensate for deficiencies in the learning process. Therefore, student-led assessment can be used as a tool to increase science concept understanding by continuously checking the level of science concept understanding.
Chemical batteries are indispensable materials, and technologies related to chemical batteries are important as they are linked to various social problems; further, they directly affect our lives. Thus, the topic of chemical batteries is suitable for industrial education. However, there has not been sufficient educational use of chemical batteries in Korea, and existing research materials do not correspond with the present curriculum. The STS teaching-learning materials about chemical batteries in this study were developed by the curriculum development model (preparation, development, improvement) for chemical engineering students in specialized vocational high schools. In the preparation stage, the study topic and the learning objective were selected by analyzing previous research about the STS and chemical battery. At the development stage, STS class plan and teaching-learning materials were developed. In the improvement stage, The STS curriculum plan and the teaching-learning materials were verified by a group of specialists and a survey regarding student satisfaction was conducted. As a result of conducting the class with the teaching-learning materials developed in this study, a positive effect in terms of students' perceptions, understanding and interest.
In this study, four gifted students in the second year of middle school at Gifted Education Center of the National University in Jeollanam-do were surveyed students' perceptions of the effectiveness of science class using science writing heuristic in terms of metacognition and the goals of the 2015 revised science curriculum. Through questionnaires and interviews with gifted science students, science gifted students recognized that the science class using science writing heuristic had a positive effect on the four subdomains (planning, monitoring, control, and evaluation) of metacognition. For this reason, the science gifted students presented self-directed experience in designing experiments, continually checking the collected experimental data, feedback process, and reflecting experience in preparing conclusions. Science gifted students recognized that science class using science writing heuristic had a positive effect on the goals of the 2015 revised science curriculum(attitudes, inquiry, knowledge, Science·Technology·Society(STS), and the enjoyment and usefulness of science learning) that correspond to through inquiry science writing lessons. For this reason, the science gifted students presented self-directed inquiry experiences, continual inquiry experiences on the same subject, thinking process at each stage of inquiry, learning experiences through inquiry, experience of the whole inquiry process, and inquiry of phenomena closely related to real life. Therefore, for the effective science class, it is necessary to apply the characteristics of science class using science writing heuristic which is responded by science gifted students to general science class as well as science gifted class later.
In this study, the effects of a self-assessment on the students' science concept understanding and science-related attitudes were investigated. Student's perceptions towards the self-assessment were also examined. Five classes from a middle school in Gyunggi Province were chosen. Two of those classes were assigned to the control group that no self-assesment tool was applied to and the other 3 classes were assigned to the experimental group which a self-assess-ment tool developed for this study was applied to. The experimental group was further divided into two groups for imple-ment of two kinds of programs. One experimental group was provided some feedback such as solutions to problems and the other was not provided any type of feedback. The tests of science-related attitudes were administered before and after the instruction period. The science concepts understanding test was done only after the instruction. The results of this study were as follows. There were significant differences between the experimental group and control group in under-standing of scientific concepts. The enhancement of science-related attitudes was also higher for the experimental group. Providing feedback to students was more effective in the improvement of students' science-related attitudes. However, there were no significant differences in understanding of scientific concepts in relation to the feedback in experiment groups. From the above results, it was acknowledged thet self-assessment applied to the middle school science class showed considerably positive influences on the improvements of the understanding of scientific concepts and science-related attitudes.
