  • This study purposed to investigate harmonic compositions and progressions that are appropriate for emotion vocabulary. In study 1, eight(8) professional music therapists were asked to provide harmonic compositions and progressions reflecting the tonal characteristics of emotion vocabulary and the rationales. Various attributes of harmonic compositions and progressions were examined and the content analysis were administered. In study 2, the obtained data on study 1 were evaluated by 124 music therapy and music majors for the validity. In the first study, analyzed results showed that 'happy' vocabulary utilized major, tonic, consecutive chord changes, 'angry' vocabulary utilized minor, augmented, $9^{th}$, $11^{th}$, unsolved $7^{th}$ chord progression, 'sad' vocabulary utilized minor, diminish, chromatic chord progressions. In the second study, there was statistically significant difference with 'happy' vocabulary. These results can provide basic evidences for musical ideas of harmonic compositions and progressions to better communicate emotional aspects of lyrical messages when composing melody in a song.

  • This paper presents an algorithm for the automatic detection of chord names, scales and tonalities from music file, expressed in MusicXML format which has enough information to determine harmonies vertically like 4-part choir. Chord names are absolute names which can be used and analysed independently of the tonality An algorithm selecting the best chord name is described, which can decide the most appropriate one from ambiguous situations. Candidate musical scales are extracted using the notes in a given time window. The tonalities of the music are determined using the chord names and candidate scales. The final output format of the process is also MusicXML file with chord names, marked non-harmonic notes, relative harmonic symbols and tonalities.

  • This study investigated the harmonic preference of children and adolescents depending on age and musical training. A total of 684 primary and secondary school students participated in this study. For this study, a four-measure melody was composed and constructed in four levels of harmonic complexity, determined by the rate of nonharmonic notes used and immediacy of harmonic resolution. Participants rated the degree of their perceived complexity and their preferences after listening to each musical stimulus. Ratings from the participants were analyzed in terms of the effect of age and the length of musical training. The results showed that younger students demonstrated little to no change in their preference regardless of the complexity level. Middle and high school students showed significantly decreased preference with increased harmonic complexity. High school students with more musical instrument training perceived changes in harmonic complexity more sensitively and showd higher level of optimal complexity. Younger students was affected by musical training relatively less than older students. This study presents the baseline data to be considered when determining the appropriate level of harmonic complexity for music appreciation of young population.

  • Music and mathematics have a lot of structural similarities. Major and minor triads used importantly in music are in a relationship of inversion in which the sequence of the intervals is reversed, which is equivalent to reflection in mathematics. Geometrical expressions help understand structures in music as well as mathematics, and a diagram that shows tonal relationships in music is called Tonnetz. Relationships of reflection between major and minor triads can easily be understood by using Tonnetz, and also, transpositions can be expressed in translation. This study looks into existing Tonnetz and introduces S-Tonnetz newly formed by a mathematical principle.

  • From a film esthetic point of view, this paper deals with all the sound elements which are speech, noise, and music for the signification of sound in Hitchcock's . The speech makes a mental image auditory through voice-over, and sometimes it has the indiscernibleness of life and death to be incarnate. This paper has demonstrated that the noise also can mark punctuation-narrative boundary besides visual techniques pointed out by Metz, and it cites the sound of falling water which completes shower scene, offsetting a scream in audience's mind. In the music, desire and oppression are symbolized and they are making a dissonance. Upon occasion, the coexistence of two chords represents duplicity in Norman-mother. Also, the music may disappear in the way of silence, being mummified in the time paused. Thus, the common filmic signification of sounds in can be called reconceptualization of the image.

  • Film music expresses the inner mentality of characters and performs a suggestive role of narrative. This study suggests the process of musical change according to the psychological change of the characters in the movie "The Hours" by Stephen Daldry. These musical elements depending on the mental states prove that the minute differences of each depression symptom could be expressed using symbolic methods of musical elements.

  • In this paper, a computer vision system, which catches printed music score image using CCTV camera and microcomputer, and then recognizes the image and performs tar music with speaker, is discussed. Integral projection method is adopted for feature detection and recognition of the music score image. The range of recognition is con(ined to staffs, perpen-dicular lines and musical notes including chord notes among the various kinds of elements of music score. The practical recognition algorithm considering noises, the preprocessing processes getting rid of noises are also showed, and simple hardware system playing chord is made, In the results, good recognition ratio and performance are obtained.

  • This paper describes an analysis of the music as a time series and the fuzzy logic-based modeling of it. All music is made up of a finite number of musical notations known as the musical symbols, such as clefs, staff, tine signature, notes, rests, etc. . The musical score uses musical symbols to present various characteristics, such as rhythm, melody, chord, etc,. for interpreting the music. In this paper, it is possible to transform the beat and pitch in the musical into time series from the viewpoint of recognizing beat and pitch of sounding tone at each time. On the basis of the identified features of the musical score, a musical score is represented as a time series and then is constructed to fuzzy logic-based model for predicting them. Examples are presented to illustrate the validity of the proposed method.
