A Study on Soil Cementation and Calcite Precipitation with Clay as a Medium (점토를 매개체로 한 탄산칼슘 석출 및 흙의 고결에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we tried to precipitate calcium carbonate with carbonate ions decomposed from urea by plant extract and calcium ions dissolved in water. The clay particles carry a net negative charge on their surfaces. Such clay mineral was additionally mixed as a medium to improve soil strength and durability with environmentally-friendly way. The $1^{st}$ solution (plant extracts and urea) and the $2^{nd}$ solution (calcium chloride and clay) were mixed together with clean Nakdong River sand. Then, this mixed soil was compacted into a small cylindrical specimen and then air cured for 7 days in laboratory. The molar concentration of urea and calcium chloride was tested for three different conditions, 1, 5, and 7 mol. Three different clay contents (0, 1, and 3% per total weight) were mixed with sand. For each specimen, a series of unconfined compression test, a durability test, SEM, EDX and XRD analyses were carried out to evaluate its cementation and structure. As the molar concentration of the solution and clay content increased, the unconfined compressive strength and durability increased. The results of SEM, EDX and XRD analyses showed that calcite was precipitated around clay mineral. The thermogravimetry analysis indicated that calcium carbonate precipitated about 1~2% per total weight of the sample.

Growth and Survival by the Breeding Method of Early Young Spats of the Hard Clam, Meretrix petechiails (LAMARCK) (말백합, Meretrix petechiails (LAMARCK) 초기치패의 사육방법별 성장 및 생존)

  • To establish technical development for artificial seed production, growth and survival for early young spats of the hard clam, Meretrix petechialis, were investigated by breeding methods. Adult clams were collected at Hasa-ri, Baeksu-eup, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do on July 13, 2010, and then transported to the indoor aquarium at the laboratory. Eggs which were taken from mother clams, were inseminated, and after they were fertilized in the aquarium, 60 million bottom-clinging spats ($198{\pm}12{\mu}m$ in shell length) were produced and bred. The breeding experiments were carried out from July 16 to October 4, 2010 for 80 days. The methods of sand box, sand bottom circulation filter, inclosing net, floor were used for the breeding experiments, and the experimental condition of sea water temperature for larvae were at 25, 28, 31, $34^{\circ}C$. Four marine cultured food organisms were used for this study as follows: Isochrysis galbana, Chaetoceros gracilis, Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Tetraselmis tetrathele. According to the experimental conditions, experimental groups of the spats in the early stage were investigated the growth rate and the survival. As the result, the method of the inclosing net section was the fastest (grew up to $2.64{\pm}0.59{\mu}m$ in shell length), followed by sandbox ($2.59{\pm}0.64{\mu}m$, bottom circulating filter ($2.56{\pm}0.52{\mu}m$), and floor ($2.52{\pm}0.56{\mu}m$). The survival was the highest in the experimental condition of sandbox (35.9%), followed by floor (34.6%), bottom circulating filter (29.5%), and inclosing net (9.3%). Eexperimental condition of water temperature of $34^{\circ}C$ showed the fastest growth rate (grew up to $2.70{\pm}0.76{\mu}m$ in shell length), and showed the latest growth rate (grew up to $2.45{\pm}0.41{\mu}m$ in shell length) at $25^{\circ}C$. The survival (%) was the highest under the water temperature conditions at $31^{\circ}C$, and showed the lowest (14.2%) at $34.^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of the experimental group fed the mixture live food was the fastest with shell length $2.52{\pm}0.66{\mu}m$, and that of experimental group fed P. tricornutum showed the latest (grew up to $2.29{\pm}0.43{\mu}m$ in shell length). The survival was the highest (36.9%) under the experiment condition fed mixture live food and experimental group fed T. tetrathele showed the lowest rate (16.2%).

In vitro propagation and multiple shoot induction of Rhodiola rosea L. by axillary bud culture (홍경천(Rhodiola rosea L.)의 액아배양을 통한 다신초 유도 및 기내 대량증식)

  • An efficient in vitro propagation was established by using axillary bud explants of roseroot (Rhodiola rosea L.), which has been known as a medicinal plant in East Asia. Among various media tested, MS medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L BA and 1.0 mg/L $GA_3$ was found to be the best for multiple shoot formation (15 axillary shoots per axillary bud). In addition 1/2MS medium containing 50 g/L sucrose was best for shoot elongation (7.8 cm) and increasing total chlorophyll contents (8.64 mg/g) best. Maximum number of roots (17.7 roots per explant) was observed on the medium without plant growth regulators. Propagated plants were successfully acclimatized to ex vitro conditions, with a survival frequency of 97% after 12 weeks. Most rooted shoots grew well and produced viable seeds when grown in vitro culture conditions. Therefore, R. rosea can be effectively propagated in vitro by the system we developed in this study.

Flame and Carbonization Patterns of Animal-Origin Foods Ignited by Overheating (과열에 의해 발화된 동물성 식품의 화염 및 탄화 패턴에 관한 연구)

  • Real-scale fire tests were performed on animal-origin foods using a gas stove with no overheating prevention device. When the animal-origin foods were ignited, a large quantity of white smoke and steam was generated from them; however, when they became dry and began to carbonize, a dark smoke was generated. Even after the gas stove was overheated for more than 5400 s, mackerel, pollack, chicken, etc., did not ignite. However, pork, beef, and tuna caught fire after 2643 s, 2819 s, and 6492 s of heating, respectively. The flame patterns of animal-origin foods were in the forms of a mixed laminar flow and a turbulent flow, and a halo pattern was produced. A sand glass form of the flame pattern was generated when a kitchen hood was operated, but a triangular flame pattern was produced when the kitchen hood was not operated. When the tuna in the pot was overheated, it spontaneously ignited after 6492 s, with the surface temperature of the kitchen hood rapidly rising to 464.5 ℃. Moreover, the temperature at the back of the pot, which was 6 cm away from the outer surface of the upper part of the pot, was 869 ℃ after 6660 s because of the radiant heat. The flame formed a sand glass pattern on the kitchen wall. When the kitchen hood was not operated, or when the flame grew lower than the height of the ceiling, a triangular pattern was formed.

A Fundamental Study of Ferro Copper Slag for Concrete Aggregate (동슬래그의 콘크리트용 골재 활용에 관한 기본연구)

  • To use ferro copper slag as aggregate in the construction, an evaluation upon the two kinds of ferro copper slag being produced was conducted to determine the basic physical, and mechanical properties, chemical component and environmental noxiousness. As a result of experiment, it was found that two kinds of ferro copper slag satisfies the physical and mechanical properties of aggregate, prescribed in KS F 2526, and that in the result of noxious heavy metal eruption test by single bach extraction, no eruption of noxious heavy metal was detected or the eruption was far below the reference value. And mortar test was conducted by replacing sand of 25, 50, 75, 100% and the performance level was presented upon reviewing the fluidity property and variable aspects of unit weight. The increase of strength in accordance with replacement rate of sand was found to be the below than the equivalent level compared to the testing specimens that did not use ferro copper slag, but those of 25% replacement rate was above than 0%. Thus, two kinds of ferro copper slag, produced in the domestic, were found to be possessing the enough physical properties to use as concrete aggregate assuming that used with sand and in particular, it was reviewed to be advantageous in manufacturing concrete or mortar that requires weight.

Effect of Struvite Crystallization Kinetics; Seed Material, Seed Particle Size, $G{\cdot}t_d$ Value (Struvite 결정화에 미치는 영향; Seed 물질, Seed 입자크기, $G{\cdot}t_d$ Value의 영향)

  • This study focused on shorten the period of the struvite crystal birth and development by adding seed materials. For this purpose, three different seed materials were selected: sand, anthracite and struvite. The experiments has been conducted to evaluate the effect of the particle size of the selected seed material on the struvite crystallization, and to study the mixing effect which can be expressed by the value of $G{\cdot}t_d$(the multiple of mean velocity gradient(G) and mixing time($t_d$)). It was observed in this study that the removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen increased by 9%, 11%, and 20% for sand, anthracite, and struvite added as the seed material, respectivley. This indicated that the struvite crystallization efficiency had a close correlation with the specific surface area of the seed particle. It was found that when struvite was selected as the seed material, the struvite crystallization proceeded at lower $G{\cdot}t_d$ value as compared with other seed materials. This observation implied that the secondary crystal birth would be dominated in this reaction. It was concluded in this study that the particle size was not significant factor on the struvite crystallization, while the $G{\cdot}t_d$ value was a considerably important factor in terms of the theory of the struvite crystal birth.

A Study on the Behavior of Blasting Demolition for a Reinforced Concrete Structure Using Sealed Model Test and Particle Flow Analysis (축소모형실험과 입자결합모델 해석을 통한 철근 콘크리트 구조물의 발파해체 거동에 관한 비교 분석)

  • In this study, a comparison was made between the resulting behaviors of scaled model test and particle flow analysis for blasting demolition of a reinforced concrete structure. For the test and analysis, a progressive failure of a five-story structure was considered. The dimension analysis was carried out to properly scale down the real structure into the laboratory size. The test model was made of the mixture of gypsum, sand and water along with soldering lead to analogy reinforcing steel bars. The ratio of mixing components was chosen to best represent the scaled down strength and deformation modulus. The columns and girders of the structure were precasted in the laboratory and assembled right before the blasting test. The numerical analysis of the blasting demolition was carried out using PFC2D (Particle Flow Analysis 2-Dimension by Itasca). The results of the blasting of concrete lahmen structure showed roughly identical demolition behavior between scaled model test and numerical test. For the blasting of the reinforced concrete structure, the results were more identical and closer to the real demolition behavior, since the demolition behavior was better represented in this case due to the increased tensile strength of the component.

A Soil Mechanical Study for a Practical Application to Forest Road Construction (임도설계(林道設計)에의 응용(應用)을 위한 흙의 토질(土質) 역학적(力學的) 특성(特性))

  • This study was carried out to discuss how soils in the area planned for a forest road construction can be mechanically tested and practically applied. For this, 16 soil test samples from 8 plots(2 samples per plot) were used. The major tests are focused on unit weight before and after cut, water content, liquid and plastic limits, sieve and hydrometer analysis etc. The total unit weight(${\rho}_t$) before and after cut are $1.69g/cm^3$ and $1.19g/cm^3$, respectively. Their water contents are 21.0% and 20.5%. The coefficient of uniformity U and coefficient of curvature C obtained from sieve and hydrometer analysis are 125 and 0.42, which mean generally not well graded. On the soil classification by USCS, SM(silty sand or silt-sand mixed soil)is a Key soil, but it seems to be not good for fill material. From the standard proctor test are resulted $1.40{\pm}0.065g/cm^3$ for the unit weight(${\rho}$) in the nature and $1.88{\pm}0.049g/cm^3$ for the optimum proctor unit weight(${\rho}pr$) each. With this to say, it is necessary more powerful compaction work at earth filling, with which this soil reachs enough the ${\rho}pr$, and more earth.

Studies on the Collection and Growth of Spat Surf clam, Spisula sachalinensis in the (북방대합, Spisula sachalinensis의 실내채묘 및 치패의 성장)

  • Effect of substrate composition, stocking density and food organisms on survival and growth of the surf clam, Spisula sachalinensis was studied. Spat collection from the substratum was the highest, when its sand size was less than 250 $\mu m4; at such substratum, survival and growth of the surf clam were also the highest. The spat (1.4 mm) grew to 4.6 mm and 8.2 mm in shell length on day 30 and 50, respectively. The relationship between shell length (SL) and shell height (SH), shell breadth (SB), total weight (TW) and shell weight (SW) of the spat are formulated by the following equations; SH : 0.7351SL+0.2272 ( $r^2$ =0.9600)i SB = 0.4037SL+0.2112 ($r^2$ = 0.9452); TW : 0.2824SL^{2.7020} ($r^2$ = 0.9820)i SW = $0.4021SL^{2.0217} ($r^2$ : 0.6169). In the substratum containing fine sand, growth and survival of the clam roared at the density of 1~2 ind./$cm^2$ were optimal. The quality of feed decreases in the following order; C. calcitrans, mixture group, I. galbana, P. lutheri, T. suecica.

Survey of Sedimentary Environment and Sediment at the West-Northern Site of Chagwi-do nearby Jeju Island (제주도 차귀도 서북쪽 해역 내 퇴적 환경 및 퇴적물 조사)

  • The sedimentary environment and sediment were surveyed at the West-Northern site of Chagwi-do nearby Jeju Island for the design of the embedded suction anchor system of 10 MW-class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. According to the classification scheme of Chough et al.[2002], the echo type of the seismic profiles using the chirp III was classified. As a results, the center and west-northern area of survey site were proved to be type I-3 where subbottom layer with thickness 5~15 m exists under the flat seafloor. On the other hands, the east-southern area were regarded to be type I-1, I-2 and III-1 where seafloor reflection is much stronger than type I-3. Also, the physical tests (unit weight, moisture content, grain size, liquid limit, specific gravity) were performed with samples taken from 8 fixed locations. It is found that the sand (SP), the sand blended with silt (SM) and the mixture of SP-SM are distributed uniformly on the survey area.
