  • Using a level set method and topological derivatives, a topological shape optimization method that is independent of an initial design is developed for linearly elastic structures. In the level set method, the initial domain is kept fixed and its boundary is represented by an implicit moving boundary embedded in the level set function, which facilitates to handle complicated topological shape changes. The "Hamilton-Jacobi(H-J)" equation and computationally robust numerical technique of "up-wind scheme" lead the initial implicit boundary to an optimal one according to the normal velocity field while minimizing the objective function of compliance and satisfying the constraint of allowable volume. Based on the asymptotic regularization concept, the topological derivative is considered as the limit of shape derivative as the radius of hole approaches to zero. The required velocity field to update the H-J equation is determined from the descent direction of Lagrangian derived from optimality conditions. It turns out that the initial holes are not required to get the optimal result since the developed method can create holes whenever and wherever necessary using indicators obtained from the topological derivatives. It is demonstrated that the proper choice of control parameters for nucleation is crucial for efficient optimization process.

  • Recently, owing to the technology advances in computer science and image processing, age of face classification have become prevalent topics. It is difficult to estimate age of facial shape with statistical figures because facial shape of the person should change due to not only biological gene but also personal habits. In this paper, we proposed a robust age of face classification method by using Gabor feature and fuzzy support vector machine(SVM). Gabor wavelet function is used for extracting facial feature vector and in order to solve the intrinsic age ambiguity problem, a fuzzy support vector machine(FSVM) is introduced. By utilizing the FSVM age membership functions is defined. Some experiments have conducted to testify the proposed approach and experimental results showed that the proposed method can achieve better age of face classification precision.

  • In this paper, the concept of the infinite element is applied to the linear wave diffraction and radiation problems. The hydrodynamic pressure forces are assumed to be inertially dominated, and viscous effects are neglected. The near field region surrounding the solid body is modelled using the conventional finite elements, and the far field region is represented using the infinite elements .In order to represent the scattered wave potentials in the far field region more accurately, the infinite elements are developed using special shape functions derived from the asymptotic expressions for the analytical eigenseries solution of the scattered waves. The system matrices of the infinite elements are constructed by performing the integration in the infinite direction analytically to achieve computational efficiency. Numerical analyses are carried out for vertical axisymmetric bodies to validate the infinite elements developed here. Comparisons with the results by other available numerical solution methods show that the present method using the infinite elements gives fairly good results. Numerical experiments are per-formed to determine the suitable location of the infinite elements and the appropriate size of the finite elements which directly affect accuracy and efficiency of the solution.

  • In this paper, a pattern spectrum component function is introduced for an oriented shape analysis and its properties are discussed. It can represent directional information of shape more precisely than the conventional oriented pattern spectrum. An adaptive distance function between two pattern spectrum component functions is presented to recognize different shapes in noise. As a practical application, the pattern spectrum component function is applied to warning traffic sign recognitions utilizing the adaptive distance functions. Favorable results are obtained compared to the oriented pattern spectrum.

  • In the present study, the characteristics of spectral peakedness parameter $Q_p$, bandwidth parameter ${\varepsilon}$, and spectral width parameter ${\nu}$ were analyzed as a first step to define the swell waves quantitatively. For the analysis, the joint probability density function of significant wave heights and peak periods were newly developed. The MCMC(Markov Chain Monte Carlo) simulations have been performed to generate the significant wave heights and peak periods from the developed probability density functions. Applying the simulated significant wave heights and peak periods to the theoretical wave spectrum models, the spectral shapes parameters were obtained and analyzed. Among the spectral shape parameters, only the spectral peakedness parameter $Q_p$, is shown to be independent with the significant wave height and peak wave period. It also best represents the peakedness of the spectral shape, and henceforth $Q_p$ should be used to define the swell waves with a wave period. For the field verification of the results, wave data obtained from Hupo port and Ulleungdo were analyzed and results showed the same trend with the MCMC simulation results.

  • An alternative approach for topology optimization of steady incompressible Navier-Stokes flow problems is presented by using P1 nonconforming finite elements. This study is the extended research of the earlier application of P1 nonconforming elements to topology optimization of Stokes problems. The advantages of the P1 nonconforming elements for topology optimization of incompressible materials based on locking-free property and linear shape functions are investigated if they are also valid in fluid equations with the inertia term. Compared with a mixed finite element formulation, the number of degrees of freedom of P1 nonconforming elements is reduced by using the discrete divergence-free property; the continuity equation of incompressible flow can be imposed by using the penalty method into the momentum equation. The effect of penalty parameters on the solution accuracy and proper bounds will be investigated. While nodes of most quadrilateral nonconforming elements are located at the midpoints of element edges and higher order shape functions are used, the present P1 nonconforming elements have P1, {1, x, y}, shape functions and vertex-wisely defined degrees of freedom. So its implentation is as simple as in the standard bilinear conforming elements. The effectiveness of the proposed formulation is verified by showing examples with various Reynolds numbers.

  • Using the level set and the meshfree methods, we develop a topological shape optimization method applied to linear elasticity problems. Design gradients are computed using an efficient adjoint design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method. The boundaries are represented by an implicit moving boundary(IMB) embedded in the level set function obtainable from the "Hamilton-Jacobi type" equation with the "Up-wind scheme". Then, using the implicit function, explicit boundaries are generated to obtain the response and sensitivity of the structures. Global nodal shape function derived on a basis of the reproducing kernel(RK) method is employed to discretize the displacement field in the governing continuum equation. Thus, the material points can be located everywhere in the continuum domain, which enables to generate the explicit boundaries and leads to a precise design result. The developed method defines a Lagrangian functional for the constrained optimization. It minimizes the compliance, satisfying the constraint of allowable volume through the variations of boundary. During the optimization, the velocity to integrate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation is obtained from the optimality condition for the Lagrangian functional. Compared with the conventional shape optimization method, the developed one can easily represent the topological shape variations.

  • This paper describes the design optimization of a rotating rectangular channel with staggered arrays of pin-fins by Kriging metamodeling technique. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the height to the diameter of the pin-fins and the ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to the diameter of the pin-fins are chosen as the design variables. The objective function that is a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss related terms with a weighting factor is selected for the optimization. To construct the Kriging model, objective function values at 20 training points generated by Latin hypercube sampling are evaluated by a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis method with the SST turbulence model. The Kriging model predicts the objective function value that agrees well with the value calculated by the RANS analysis at the optimum point. The objective function is reduced by 11% by the optimization of the channel.

  • This paper presents a new approach for modeling human limbs shape from 3D scan data. Based on the cylindrical structure of limbs, the overall shape is approximated with a set of ellipsoids through ellipsoid fitting and interpolation of fit-ellipsoids. Then, the smooth domain surface representing the coarse shape is generated as the envelope surface of ellipsoidal sweep, and the fine details are reconstructed by constructing parametric displacement function on the domain surface. For fast calculation, the envelope surface is approximated with ellipse sweep surface, and points on the reconstructed surface are mapped onto the corresponding ellipsoid. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for skeleton-driven body deformation.
