The rammed aggregate compaction pile method is widely used as soft ground improvement method because of the installed piles improve not only overall composite capacity but also discharge capacity. But the discharge capacity is declined when the clogging is generated due to the clay penetration into voids of rammed aggregate compaction pile with the time elapsed. The purpose of this study is to reduce the clogging problem occurred in rammed aggregate compaction pile constructed in the soft ground and to minimize voids of rammed aggregate compaction pile. The proper mixing ratio was determined which is based on the results of the large scale direct shear tests conducted to get strength and permeability as optimum mixing ratio of crushed stone and bottom ash. The test results indicated that the highest internal friction angle was obtained at 80:20 mixing ratio of crushed stone and bottom ash. The internal friction angle was declined when the mixing ratio of the bottom ash increased over 20%. The results of the clogging tests, presented that the mixture of 80:20 crushed stone and bottom ash is highest effective of clogging than ratio of pure crushed stone.
Grouting materials in rock is grouted as vein type along the fault surface by the other way for soil and allow a change of characteristics in rock faults as a result of that. Therefore the deformation characteristics of rock faults after grouting differ as a direction and characteristic of grouted fault and stress condition of field rock. Thereby it must be analyzed the effect for deformation of rock according to characteristics of rock faults and characteristics of grouting materials to accurately evaluate the reinforced effect by grouting. But grouting method used in field until present depends on experience of workers, and inspection for those effects are evaluated by measurement of elastic wave velocity, permeability tests and etc. in field. In this study, it was investigated that the effects for shear characteristics of maximum shear strength, residual shear strength and etc. by comparison and analysis of test results which were worked by direct shear tests of rock faults with changing a type of grouting materials and the grouting depth(t) for average width(a) of fault surface roughness when OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and Micro cement was grouted in fault surface of field rock to evaluate characteristicsof the shear deformation for rock fault surface of dam by grouting.
In the current practice for slope stability problem in Japan, the shear strength, $\tau$, mobilized along the failure surface is usually estimated based on an empirical approximation in which the cohesion, c, is assumed to be equal to the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface, d(m). This approximation is advantageous in that the result of stability analysis is not influenced by the designers in charge. However, since the methodology has little theoretical background, the cohesion may often be grossly overestimated, and conversely the angle of shear resistance, $\phi$, is significantly underestimated, when the soil thickness above the supposed slip surface is quite large. In this paper, a case record of natural slope failure that took place in Hyogo Prefecture in 2007, is described in detail for the case in which the shear strength along the collapsed surface was carefully examined in a series of direct shear box (DSB) tests by considering the effects of in-situ shear stress along the slip surface. It is demonstrated that the factor of safety agrees with that of in-situ conditions when the shear strength from this kind of DSB test was employed for the back-analysis of the slope failure.
In order to analyze the deformational behavior accurately, the in-situ testing technique which provides the reliable deformational characteristics at whole strain ranges, needs to be developed. The pressuremeter is a unique method for assessing directly the in-situ shear modulus of soils with strain amplitude. This paper introduces a new alternative, the cavity strain measuring system in pressuremeter designed for whole strain ranges of $10^{-5}$%∼20%. Not only in the synthetic calibration chamber but also in the field, the pressuremeter tests were performed to determine the compliance of the new developed pressuremeter system. The variation in shear modulus with strain amplitude above $5\times 10^{-2}$% was reliably determined by the developed pressuremeter. It is concluded that the major cause of error in small cavity strain measuring is not from the cavity strain measuring system but from the friction between measuring arm and membrane during unloading-reloading loops.
The high-density polyurethane method uses the instantaneous expansion pressure of injected material to stabilize soft ground, allowing reinforcement, restoration, and construction to be carried out in suboptimal ground conditions. Under normal and, even poor conditions, the method is easily applied because the working time is very short. The method is environmentally friendly and results have excellent durability. The purpose of this study was to verify the physical and mechanical properties of high-density polyurethane in the ground. Initial testing of strength, direct shear, and soil environment stability was followed by testing for permeability in order to address environmental concerns. The results of the experiments showed that the internal friction angle was about twice as high and the adhesion was about 2.5 to 3.5 times higher than for dense and hard clay, and that the permeability factor was significantly lower compared with the existing grouting method, within the range of 1.0 × 10-5.
To evaluate the compaction in the domestic construction sites, mainly(PBT) plate bearing test is used. PBT may result in over-estimation in the well-compacted area. Estimation method for the degree of compaction was developed from the penetration index of the surface by cone penetration. The developed system is easily attached to the mobile transportation and directly can acquire the degree of compaction.
Geomembrane, compacted clay liner, and geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) are widely used to prevent leachate from leaking to adjacent geo-environment at a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill. Interface shear strength between GCL and geomembrane installed at a landfill side slope is important properties for the safe design of side liner or final cover systems. The interface shear strength between two geosynthetics was estimated by a large direct shear test in this study. The shear strength was evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The effects of normal stress, hydration or dry condition, and a hydration method were investigated. The test results show that the interface shear strength and shear behavior varied depending up on the level of normal stress, the type of geosynthetic combinations, and a hydration method. When GCLs were sheared after being hydrated under 6kPa loading, the results were consistent with those published by other researchers. Summaries of friction angles, normal stress and hydration condition is presented. These friction angles could be used as a reference value at a site where similar geosynthetics are installed.

Pressuremeter test estimates the deformational properties of soil from the relationship between applied pressure and the displacement of cavity wall. It is general to utilize the reloading curve for the estimation of deformational properties of soil because the initial loading curve can be affected by the disturbance caused by boring. On the other hand, the instrumental resolution or the variation of measured data makes it hard to estimate the maximum shear modulus from pressuremeter test results. This study suggested the methodology estimating the maximum shear modulus from pressuremeter test directly, based on the curve fitting of reloading curve. In addition, the difference was taken into account between the stress state around the probe in reloading and that of the in-situ state. Pressuremeter tests were conducted for 15 cases using a large calibration chamber, together with a number of reference tests. The maximum shear moduli taken from suggested method were compared with those from empirical correlation and bender element test.
Strength and deformation characteristics of oyster shell-sand mixtures were investigated to utilize waste oyster shell being treated as a waste material. Standard penetration test (SPT) is a common method to obtain in-situ strength in sand. However, in case of oyster shell-sand mixtures, there was no information between SPT N-value and internal friction angle of mixture soils. In this paper SPT experiments from several large scaled model chamber tests and large scaled direct shear tests were carried out with varying unit weight of oyster shell-sand mixtures. Appropriate correlations were in tile study observed among N-value, unit weight and internal friction angle, which make it possible to estimate in-situ strength from SPT and the coefficient of volume compressibility from the confined compression tests to compute the settlement of oyster shell-sand mixtures.
Liquefaction resistance depends strongly upon the degree of saturation, which is expressed in terms of the pore pressure coefficient, B. The B-value has been widely used to quantify the state of saturation of laboratory samples. However, it is practically impossible to determine in situ state of saturation by using the B-value. So, P-wave velocity can be alternatively used as a convenient index for evaluating the in situ state of saturation. In this paper, the Stokoe type torsional shear (TS) testing system was modified to saturate the specimen, with which it is also possible to measure P ($V_p$), S-wave velocity ($V_s$) and the excess pore water pressure buildup In order to examine the effect of B-value for nearly saturated sands. A series of the tests were carried out at 3 relative densities (40%, 50% and 75%) and various B-values using Toyoura sand. Based on the test results, the variations of $V_p\;and\;V_s$ with B-value were analyzed and compared with a existing theoretically derived formula. The normalized pore water pressure, $du/{\sigma}{_0}'$ and cyclic threshold shear strain, ${\gamma}^c_{th}$ with B-value were also analyzed. Additionally the test results related to pore water pressure were analyzed by $V_p$ to apply to the field seismic analysis.
