A Study on the Development of Helicopter Accident Prevention Program by Spatial Disorientation (비행착각에 의한 헬리콥터 사고 예방 프로그램 개발에 관한 연구)

  • According to the results of a survey of pilots, 92% or 230 out of 252 respondents said they had experienced flight errors during flight. As so many pilots are experiencing Spatial Disorientation, and this is one of the main causes of aircraft accidents and loss of life, so it is important to understand accurately. However, in Korea, training equipment for fixed-wing pilots has already been developed and trained, or recently developed, and some equipment for helicopter pilots is available in the Korea Air Force, but there is no environment for helicopter pilots to receive training in Spatial Disorientation prevention. Therefore, we intend to produce a helicopter-only simulator, present a program to prevent possible Spatial Disorientation during flights for helicopter pilots, and propose legal and institutional measures based on future training data.

Effectiveness Analysis of Helicopter Flight Simulator and Actual Flight Training: Focused on Instrument Flight Training (헬리콥터 비행 시뮬레이터와 실 비행훈련과의 효과 분석: 계기비행 훈련을 중심으로)

  • To compare and analyze the differences between flight simulation and actual flight among 130 army helicopter pilot training subjects, the correlation analysis was performed first through t-testing and multiple regression analysis of individual characteristics and flight simulation and actual instrument flight training, which were analyzed significantly in the age (a3) and service classification (a5) of the six verification factors. This has been shown to be significant, with no difference between the flight simulator and the actual flight. Second, in order to study the correlation between aircraft types, the flight evaluation (v1) was analyzed as a dependent variable for the performance of the flight simulator (KUH: s2, UH60: s3, AH-1S: s5, UH-1H: s6), and the results of the multiple regression analysis of the flight simulator evaluation (s1) were analyzed, in contrast, as a dependent variable, and in conclusion, the training of the flight simulator provided statistical data on the possibility of replacing the actual flight training, which is thought to contribute to the orientation, budget reduction and aviation safety of the pilot training.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a training scenario for KA-32T helicopter simulator. First, the concept of training scenario are classified into training elements and training information. Secondly, the training elements are defined according to the property of each element: flight phase, situation, and environment. The main mission of KA-32T on the operation of KFS(Korea Forest Service) is the forest fire extinguishment mission, and it is divided into the two disciplines: water supply and water discharge. Finally the mission scenario for two disciplines are defined and developed as the combination of the normal procedures of training scenario and the mission procedures.

  • The objective of the KA-32 Helicopter Training Simulator Development Program, executed by the Republic of Korea Government, is to acquire a helicopter simulator which meets level C requirements in accordance with the FAA AC 120-63. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) manages the development program and is supposed to develop and validate the flight dynamics model based on simulator design data and flight test data. The helicopter chosen for this project is the Kamov KA32T, operated by the Korean Forest Aviation Office. This paper presents the test program and information about the installation and execution of the flight tests. The program consist of tests for the simulator qualification, additional tests for model data and additional tests for model validation. The flight trials were performed from 30 July to 31 August at the Iksan airbase of the Forest Aviation Office (FAO).

Design of robust servo systems and application to control of training simulator for radio-controlled helicopter (강인한 서보계설계와 R/C헬리콥터 트레이닝 시뮬레이터 제어에의 응용)

  • In this paper, a new construction for training simulator of R/C helicopter based on two types of servo controller is proposed. Two modified algorithms (algorithm I and II) for servo controller design are presented. Algorithm I is developed by adopting Davison's method in the case that the expressions for the homogeneous differential equations of reference input and disturbance are different types, and algorithm II is done by considering error weighting function for the servo controller of algorithm I . The linear fractional transformation method is incorporated in both design methods in order to assign the closed loop poles of the servo system in a specified region. The helicopter simulator is composed by the gimbals with two freedom of rolling and pitching. The reliability and validity for the design methods of the proposed servo controller are investigated through the practical experiment for the simulator by using 16bits micro-computer with A/D and D/A converters. It can be observered from the experimental results that the proposed servo controller is applicable to practical plants since the simulator is robust for the arbitrary disturbance and it follows to the given reference input without significant steady state error.

  • A flight simulator is an instrument which lets pilots attain proficiency of handling various emergency situations, and the sense of flying. In this thesis, current status of domestic simulators will be stated, and after showing the problems with the present management of these simulators, comparisons of how and what kind of facilities they are managed around the globe will be made. After comparing and analyzing the difference in the way the simulators are ran, measures of improvement in domestically appropriate simulators and increase of operating facilities will be drawn.

  • R/C helicopter has been used to several fields of military affairs, investigation searching and toys because it has small size hovering and vortical take-off characteristics etc. Therefore it needs more realizable control method. The paper introduces simulation and experimental results for control of a helicopter training simulator by self tuning control method. To realize the disturbance rejection and the given reference tracking, a least common multiple polynomial between the reference and disturbance model polynomials is operated to the plant model. The effectiveness of the method is shown by simulation and experimental results for a helicopter training simulator with two degree of freedom.

  • As the domestic aviation industry develops, demand for pilots is increasing. As a result, the demand for flight training using flight simulation training devices that implement the same or similar interior of aircraft is also increasing. Despite this increase in demand, domestic laws, regulations and management systems related to flight simulation training devices have remained unchanged since 2009. As a result, the criteria for designation of new or developed flight simulation training devices are ambiguous. In addition, proper improvement of the current system should be prioritized for designation of new devices such as UAM and VR, along with developing flight simulation training devices. It is intended to present measures to improve the domestic flight simulation training system by investigating and analyzing advanced cases overseas.

Error Rate and Flight Characteristics of Rotary-Wing Aircraft Pilots Under Low Visibility Conditions (저시정 조건에서 회전익 항공기 조종사 에러 발생율 및 비행특성)

  • The majority of civil aviation accidents are caused by human factors, and especially for rotary-wing aircraft, accidents often occur in situations where pilots unexpectedly or unintentionally enter into instrument meteorological conditions (IIMC). This research analyzed the error rates of rotary-wing aircraft pilots under low visibility conditions from various angles to gain insights into flight characteristics and to explore measures to reduce accidents in IIMC situations. The occurrence rate of errors by pilots under low visibility conditions was examined using a flight simulator equipped with motion, with 65 pilots participating in the experiment. Flight data obtained through the experiment were used to aggregate and analyze the number of errors under various conditions, such as reductions in flight visibility, the presence or absence of spatial disorientation, and the pilot's qualifications. The analysis revealed peculiarities in flight characteristics under various conditions, and significant differences were found in the rate of error occurrence according to the pilot's qualification level, possession of instrument flight rules (IFR) qualifications, and during different phases of flight. The results of this research are expected to contribute significantly to the prevention of aircraft accidents in IIMC situations by improving pilot education and training programs.
