Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of affective and cognitive empathy, and peer competence on behavioral problems among young children. Methods: The participants were 224 4- to 5-year-olds attending daycare centers in Gyeonggi-do. Children's empathy, peer competence, and behavioral problems were reported by their teachers. The collected data were analyzed using simple regression and three-step hierarchical multiple regression analyses. Results: The results showed that children who exhibited low affective empathy scored higher on peer acceptance and behavioral problems than children who had high affective empathy. This pattern of results was similarly found with cognitive empathy. Additionally, the effect of children's affective empathy on behavioral problems was fully mediated by peer competence, whereas the effect of children's cognitive empathy on behavioral problems was partially mediated by peer competence. Conclusion: These results suggest the need for peer-competence training based on affective empathy and training for both peer competence and cognitive empathy in reducing behavioral problems among young children.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship among mothers' parenting stress, children's emotional-behavioral problems, and development of children's play patterns. For this study, we observed 81 5-year-old children attending a kindergarten in Southern Chungcheong province. The results of this study are as follows: First, as the mothers felt more parenting stress, the children showed more emotional-behavioral problems. This means that there exists a positive relationship between two factors. Second, aggression, oppositional defiance, and attention deficit among the children's emotional-behavioral problems had a significant, negative influence on the frequency of non-play and parallel play, while they had a significant, affirmative effect on the frequency of group play. Consequently, this study found that mother's parenting stress and child's emotional-behavioral problems affect the development of child's play patterns both directly and indirectly.
This study examined the relationship between family socioeconomic status, emotional behavioral problems, parental composition, and parents' life satisfaction, all of which are factors that affect the life satisfaction of Korean middle school students. To this end, multi-group analysis was conducted on KCYPS panel data. The results showed four major patterns. First, family socioeconomic status has a significant direct effect on the students' life satisfaction only when the student has two parents and when the student's parents have high life satisfaction. Second, family socioeconomic status only significantly influenced students' emotional behavioral problems when parents had low life satisfaction, regardless of parental composition. Third, the mediating effect of emotional behavioral problems (aggression) in the relationship between family socioeconomic status and student life satisfaction was only significant when the student had two-parents and when the student's parents' had low life satisfaction. Fourth, depression was the variable most stronly correlated with student life satisfaction. This paper discusses the limitations of this study and the impliations of its results about how to improve students' life satisfaction.
This study investigated the relationships between socio-economic status of family, home environment stimulation, children's behavioral problems, and interactive peer play of preschool children. Surveys of 2,150 Korean mothers with their preschool children(Mean age= 51.9 months) from the Panel Study of Korean Children by Korea Institute of Child Care and Education were analyzed using structural equation modeling. Each variable's confirmatory factor analysis showed the correlation coefficient below .85, which made a satisfactory level of discriminant validity. The model fit to the data well, with an agreeable level of index. The major findings were as follows. First, SES did not significantly affected children's interactive peer play. Second, SES significantly affected home environment stimulation and children's behavioral problems. And the relationship between SES and children's behavioral problems are significantly mediated by home environment stimulation. Third, the relationship between SES and children's interactive peer play are significantly mediated by home environment stimulation and children's behavioral problems. These results help better understand the paths among the home characteristics and children's behavioral problems on children's social development. Interpretation and implication of the results have been discussed.
The study examined whether children's behavioral problem and self-resilience mediated the association between mothers' democratic parenting and their children's school life adjustment perceived by children. We analyzed data from the fourth Korean Children and Youth Panel Study (KCYPS) that included democratic parenting, behavioral problem, self-resilience, and school life adjustment by 1,971 mothers and fourth grade elementary school children. We identified structural relationships among the variables using SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 applying structural equation modeling. The measurement model and structure model had a favorable goodness of fit and the results of structure models on each path were as follows. First, school life adjustment had positive correlations with mother's democratic parenting and self-resilience, but there was a negative correlation between school life adjustment and behavioral problems. Second, the relationship between mother's democratic parenting and self-resilience was mediated by behavioral problems and behavioral problems; in addition, self-resilience mediated the relationship between mother's democratic parenting and school life adjustment. The results of this study suggested that children's school life adjustment and children's confidence to control behavioral problems could improve by promoting self-resilience. If fourth grade children could perceive mother's parenting as affection, monitoring children's behavioral problems could be reduced, and children's self-resilience and school life adjustment could be increased.
The subjects in this study of parenting attitudes, children's behavior problems and attention ability were 111 5-year-old children and their parents. Data was analyzed by mean, frequency, percent, three-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation. Results showed that behavior problems and attention ability of children varied by the parenting attitude of mothers and fathers. Behavior problems of boys were higher than girls, and boys' attention abilities were lower than girls.' Interaction effects were found between parenting attitudes and gender in children's behavior problems and attention ability : fathers' autonomy correlated negatively with boys' behavior problems (r=-.47), task processing speed (r=-.37), and attention inconsistency (r=-.36). Children's behavioral problems correlated positively with attention inconsistency (r=.28).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors of child behavioral problems and construct a descriptive model that explains child behavioral problems for school age children. Method: The participants in the study were 586 4th, 5th, 6th graders and their mothers. The children attended 8 elementary schools located in Taejon city and their mothers. The tools used in this study was the Mother's Child Raising Behavior Scale by Park, Seong-Yeon and Yi, Sook(1990). To measure child's self esteem, the Self Esteem Scale by Kim(1987) was used; child perceived social support was measured with the Social Support Evaluation Scale by Dubow and Ullman(1989), and childhood behavioral problems were measured with the Korean standardized of version of the Korean-Child Behavior Checklist(K-CBCL)(1997). Descriptive statistics and linear structural relationship(LISREL) modeling were used to analyze the data. SAS and LISREL 8.12a programs were used. Results: The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was good $>X^2=103.07(p=0.00)$, GFI=0.96, AGFI=0.94, RMSR=0.04, RMSEA=0.07, NFI=0.94, NNFI=0.95< Maternal child raising behaviors(T=2.21) and child perceived social support(T=10.29) had a significant, direct effect on a child's self esteem. Maternal child raising behaviors(T=-3.87), and child self esteem(T=-2.04) and had a significant total effect on child behavioral problems. These variables accounted for 63% of the variance of the child behavioral problems in the school age children. Conclusion: These finding have provided support for maternal child raising behaviors, child perceived social support, and child self esteem as predictive variables of behavioral problems in school age children.
Purpose: The study was done to investigate behavioral problems in toddlers who were born prematurely and to analyze related factors. Methods: A cross-sectional explorative study was conducted with 72 preterm birth (PTB) children at 24 to 41 months of corrected age who were born at 28 to 37 weeks' gestation. During home visits, behavior problems were assessed using the Behavior Rating Index for Children (BRIC). Using a BRIC score of ${\geq}30$, children with suspected behavior problems were grouped in the non-regular behavior group. Results: Of the children, 38.9% belong to the non-regular behavior group. The mental development index score for the Korean-Bayley Scale of Infant Development- II was higher for the non-regular behavior group compared to the regular behavior group (t=2.26, p=.027). Logistic regression analysis showed that lower maternal attachment (<96, OR=3.4, 95% CI[1.1, 10.4]) and higher parenting stress (${\geq}97$, OR=4.8, 95% CI[1.3, 17.3]) were independently related to non-regular behavior. Conclusion: PTB Toddlers are at risk for behavior problems which are associated with low cognitive performance. Maternal-child attachment and maternal parenting stress were strongly related to behavior problems in these children. More attention is needed to understand possible behavior problems in young children with PTB, particularly focusing on maternal-child interaction and maternal mental well-being.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the prevalence of peer harassment in preschool children and assess its influence on self-concept, hyperactivity, and behavioral problems. The participants were 4 and 5 year old children recruited from preschools and day care centers. Results indicated that a small group of children were identified as victims by self and teacher-reports. Negative self-concept and hyperactivity predicted self-reported victimization. In addition, hyperactivity, internalizing, and externalizing problems were significant contributors in teacher reported victimization.
The purpose of this study was to validate a hypothetical path model of maternal childhood attachment, emotions, parenting behaviors, and child behavioral problems. The research was conducted with 240 sets or mothers and their children 70 mother-child teams from seven counseling organizations including the Children's Counseling Clinic, Community Social Welfare Service Center, and Welfare Service Center for the Disabled in Seoul, Incheon, and Pyeongtaek, and 170 elementary school children from Seoul and their mothers. Consequently, a total of 200 mother-child teams were selected for this study. The data in this study were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 program and LISREL 8.3 program. The result of this study is as follows: (1) Examining the path of paternal attachment and the internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems, it was noted that paternal attachment had the indirect effect of anxiety and over-protection on the path to internalizing problems and the indirect effect of anxiety also noted is that there is a full-mediation of anxiety and over-protection between paternal attachment and the internalizing problems. (2) Examining the path of maternal attachment and the internalizing problems, it was noted that maternal attachment has direct effect on the internalizing problems. Maternal attachment has the indirect effect of self-esteem depression, anxiety and over-protection on the Path, and the indirect effect of self-esteem, anxiety and over-protection. (3) Examining the path of maternal attachment and the externalizing problems, it was noted that maternal attachment has direct effect on the externalizing problems and on the path to the externalizing problems, and maternal attachment has the indirect effect of depression, the indirect effect of self-esteem and authoritarian control, and the indirect effect of self-esteem and depression.
