On the Application of Game Theory to the Competition among Major Ports in NE Asia for T/S Cargos (환적화물 유치를 위한 동북아 항만간 경쟁에 게임이론의 응용)

  • Due to rapid growth of East Asian economy, some changes are being made in trade volume and shipping market of this area. Busan port in Korea and Shanghai port in China are continually increasing their investment in port development and competitiveness in order to become the logistics hub of Northeast Asia. Especially the competition for transshipment containers becomes more and more fierce. So in this study, we set a goal of increasing the port competitiveness on transshipment cargo by an analysis of competition strategies. We choose the Busan port and the Shanghai port as the research objects, game competition model and real data is used to analyze the two ports' price strategies and market share. According to the results, some advices will be put forward to enhance competitiveness of the two ports.

An Evaluation of Constitutional Factors of Logistics System under the Consideration of Environmental Changes (환경변화를 고려한 우리나라 물류시스템 분석요소 평가)

  • The aim of this paper is to evaluate weight and priority values for 'inner consisted factors' and 'outer requested factors' of logistics system using the AHP(Analytic Hierarchicy Process) method. As for analysis regarding inner consisted factors, the results were shown as follows: a road transportation (0.312) as first rank; a marine transportation (0.269) as second rank; a railway transportation (0.239) as third rank; an air transportation (0.118) as fourth rank, and a pipeline transportation (0.063) as fifth rank. In terms of analysis regarding outer requested factors, the results were came out as follows: an infrastructure (0.322) as first rank; a performance (0.206) as second rank; an information system (0.151) as third rank; a human resources (0.121) as fourth rank, a business environment (0.075) as fifth rank; a connectivity (0.073) as sixth rank, and a political environment (0.052) as seventh rank.

An Empirical Study on the Competitiveness by Satisfaction Measurement of Incheon Port (인천항 이용 만족에 따른 경쟁력에 관한 실증 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the new strategies for strengthening the competi tiveness of Incheon port. To measure the calling factors and satisfaction of ports, this study developed a list of 24 items using a seven-point Likert scale through the previous literature reviews, pilot test and emerging factors. Factor analysis, regression analysis, one sample T-test, IPA and SPSS were conducted to verify the determinants choosing ports and customer satisfaction. The result of an empirical study revealed that the cargo volume and information system, etc. in Incheon port was evaluated as satisfied factors and berth availability and port charge, etc. as dissatisfied factors. Based on the outcomes of this study, to strengthen the competitiveness of Incheon port, several strategies were advised such as the inducement of North American and European cargo, port infrastructure, dedicated terminal and GTO inducement, hinterland construction, logistics companies inducement and cooperation with neighboring ports.

A Study on the Busan Port Selection Factor Changes of Shipping Companies in the Post-Corona Era (포스트 코로나 시대 선사들의 부산항 선택요인 변화분석)

  • The industry trends of major global shipping and ports in the world are changing rapidly because of the spread of COVID-19, resulting in the reorganization of GVCs by global companies, and strengthening of environmental regulations by IMO. Based on these environmental changes, Busan Port was ranked 5th in the global container port rankings in 2013. However, since the outbreak of COVID-19, Busan Port's global container port ranking in 2020 fell to 7th, behind Qingdao Port. In the post-Corona era, for Busan Port to compete with global container ports and gain a competitive edge in the port, it is necessary to accurately identify the competitive factors of Busan Port and establish a comprehensive policy. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze how the competitive factors of Busan Port have changed in the selection of ports by current global shipping companies, compared to the first study conducted in 2005. Additionally, a comprehensive policy plan was established by identifying factors impacting the frequency of future calls as well as the growth potential of Busan Port, through a stepwise multiple regression analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the call preference and growth potential of Busan Port in the post-Corona era are most affected by 'port facilities'. And it was found that the calls frequency in the future is most impacted by 'the geopolitical location' factor.

  • ECDIS의 이용과 함께 AIS, LRIT와 같은 선박식별 추적장치의 도입은 항해환경의 많은 변화를 유도하고 있다. 영국, 미국, 노르웨이, 일본 등 해운선진국들을 중심으로 전자항해의 전략개발에 관한 의제가 IMO MSC81차 회의에서 제안된 이후 2008년 MSC 제85차 회의까지 완료를 목표로 장기과제로 채택된 바가 있다. MSC 제81차 회의에서는 MAV.가 Coordinator로 하여 신규의제로 검토하도록 COMSAR 11 및 NAV 53차에 지시한 바가 있다. 본 연구에서는 국내 및 국외 전자항해 및 해양정보시스템의 동향분석을 통하여 효율적인 정보교환을 위한 해양정보통신시스템의 발전방안을 제시하였다.

  • As the circumstances surrounding world ports have changed rapidly, Port competition to attract more cargoes is increasing fiercely. Especially, fierce competition to attract the increasing container cargoes has cause main container ports on only to invest enormous fund to modernize its port facilities but also to improve efficiency in port operation and management. But, it is hard to build differentiation strategy with general port operation according to investing continuously enormous fund into main ports. In this situation, port marketing like 4P mix is of the immediate necessity and in this point, this paper estimated Brand Equity that have risen the core ability of marketing strategy, to transshipment port using Conjoint Analysis. In this analysis result, this paper shows that the brand equity of port significantly devoted to selection of transshipment port. This means that brand of port can attract considerable transshipment cargo. Then it have to induce customer loyalty for this brand extension.

  • This research attempts to explore the competitive advantage of the Busan New Port based on the comparative analysis against the major ports. The competitive environment of the global shipping business poses a variety of challenges for the port authorities. Pursuing the hub position in the Northeast Asia, Busan new port needs an in-depth competitive analysis against the major ports in Singapore and China. This research proposes the strategies to exploit the locational advantage of the port while upgrading the operational efficiency. The recent development of the information technology suggests a viable solution for the Busan port.

  • Recently the large shipping companies are reducing a port of call to cut down on expenses related to the large size of ship for economy of scale. Due to this, it is necessary to work out a strategy to overcome the severe competition among ports. According to the importance of port marketing, there were many studies on port marketing. But previous studies for domestic port marketing are considered more importantly Products, Price and Promotion than Place of the 4Ps of marketing mix strategy. But it has to preferentially consider the place strategy in Busan Port because the best advantage is geographical position. So this paper shows the strategic plan of Place Marketing.

  • Due to the changes of shipping and logistic environment, Asian ports today face severe competition. To be a mega-hub port, Asian ports have achieved a big scale development. For these reasons, it has been widely recognized as an important study to analyze and evaluate characteristics of Asian ports, from the standpoint of Korea where Busan Port is located. Although some previous studies have been reported, most of them have been beyond the scope of Asian ports and analyzed the world's major ports; moreover, the studied ports have been about the ports which are well known from the previous research and reports. So, most studies is unlikely to be used as substantial indicators from the perspective of Busan Port. In addition. most of the existing studies have used hierarchical evaluation algorithm for port ranking, such as AHP (analytical hierarchy process) and clustering analysis. However, these two methods have fundamental weaknesses from the algorithm perspective. The aim of this study is to classify major Asian ports based on competitiveness level. Especially. in order to overcome serious problem of the existing studies, major Asian ports were analyzed by using objective indicators. and Fuzzy C-Means algorithm, which alleviates the weakness of the clustering method. It was found that 10 ports of 16 major Asian ports have their own phases and were classified into 4 port groups. This result implies that some ports have higher potential as ports to lead some zones in Asia. Based on those results. present status and future direction of Busan port were discussed as well.

  • This paper firstly aims to classifying the applicability of the Balanced Scorecard approach to Korean ocean-going shipping firms' management system. The applicability of this approach is from Korean shipping firms using Balanced Scorecard will create more effective and efficient organizational performance with reflecting non-financial indexes and making a balance among missions in organization. Secondly, the paper suggests positive information and theoretical evidences to improve Korean shipping firms' management system examines an availability of the Balanced Scorecard as one method of management tools. So these factors are analysed by structural equation model. This study provides CEO in Korean ocean-going shipping firm the guideline and availability of the Balanced Scorecard as to what kinds of factors should be considered and what is the most critical factor to adopt the BSC into their business.
