A Study on Early Warning Model in the Dry Bulk Shipping Industry by Signal Approach (신호접근법을 이용한 건화물시장 해운조기경보모형에 관한 연구)

  • Maritime industry is affected by outside factors significantly due to its derivative demand characteristics. However, the supply side can not react to these changes immediately and due to this uniqueness, maritime industry repeats the boom-bust cycle. Therefore the government itself needs to operate early warning system in order to monitor the market and notice the upcoming risks by setting up a system to prepare for the situations. In this research, signal approach is used to establish early warning system. Overall leading index is composed of crisis index that is based on BDI(Baltic Dry Index) and various leading indexes such as finance, economy, shipping and the others. As a result of computing overall leading index which is early warning system in maritime through signal approach, the index showed a high correlation coefficient with actual maritime risk index by difference of 4 months. Also, the result was highly accurate with overall leading index's QPS(Quadratic Probability Score) at 0.37.

An Empirical Study on Information Service Satisfaction of Shipping Market Reports (해운시황리포트 정보서비스 만족도에 관한 연구)

  • During global recessions, such as the 2008 financial crisis, Korean shipping companies have been undergoing a liquidity crisis that is comparably worse than other shipping companies worldwide. One of the reasons behind this repetitive vicious cycle can be the lack of ability to foresee the future by analyzing and understanding the volatile shipping market. Traditionally, in order to assimilate the shipping market, larger Korean shipping companies have been purchasing market reports published by Europe-based research companies and shipping brokers, leading to a digital divide by company size. To resolve this issue, the Maritime Exchange Information Center (MEIC) has been publishing shipping market reports that include essential shipping information such as freight rates by different routes; commodity trends for iron ore, grain, and coal; ship-building trends for new-building, second-hand, and demolition markets; as well as bunker price and port congestion. This research was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of four variables-information usefulness, market reflection, information composition, and latest information-on information satisfaction. If the information satisfaction was found to be adequate, the analysis of actual proof was used to determine if the customers would be willing to purchase MEIC's report when it is chargeable. All the four variables were found to have positive effects on information satisfaction. In particular, latest information was found to directly affect the intention to purchase. Furthermore, high information satisfaction was related to the intention to purchase.

A Study on the Relevance between Debt-ratio Characteristics and Investment Activity in the Korean Shipping Firms (우리나라 해운물류기업의 부채특성과 기업투자활동과의 관계에 관한 연구)

  • This paper explores the relationship between shipping firm's investment and debt-ratio characteristics. Using a panel of 41 shipping firms from 2006 to 2011, this study finds evidence that debt/asset ratio and leverage are negatively associated with firm's investment activities. This relationship shows that volume of debt and capital structure are critical decision factor on firm's investment and capital financing. In terms of financial expenses to sales, positive relationship is existed with firm's investment finding that financing cost is important to investment. The previous study of the firm's investment in other sector also shows a negative relationship with debit ratio. This study is also interested in the extent to which the firm's investment is affected by firm size because there is general agreement that smaller firms have less access to external capital markets. As results, smaller companies group have more positive relationship with factors related to financing cost such as financial expenses to sales and tax. On the other hand, bigger companies group shows the evidence that firm investment is positive relationship with asset size. The analysis corresponding to economic fluctuation shows that debit ratio is more sensitive to firm's investment during a recession. On the other hand, financial expenses to sales is more related to firm's investment during an economic boom.

A Study on the Early Warning Model of Crude Oil Shipping Market Using Signal Approach (신호접근법에 의한 유조선 해운시장 위기 예측 연구)

  • The manufacturing industry is the backbone of the Korean economy. Among them, the petrochemical industry is a strategic growth industry, which makes a profit through reexports based on eminent technology in South Korea which imports all of its crude oil. South Korea imports whole amount of crude oil, which is the raw material for many manufacturing industries, by sea transportation. Therefore, it must respond swiftly to a highly volatile tanker freight market. This study aimed to make an early warning model of crude oil shipping market using a signal approach. The crisis of crude oil shipping market is defined by BDTI. The overall leading index is made of 38 factors from macro economy, financial data, and shipping market data. Only leading correlation factors were chosen to be used for the overall leading index. The overall leading index had the highest correlation coefficient factor of 0.499 two months ago. It showed a significant correlation coefficient five months ago. The QPS value was 0.13, which was found to have high accuracy for crisis prediction. Furthermore, unlike other previous time series forecasting model studies, this study quantitatively approached the time lag between economic crisis and the crisis of the tanker ship market, providing workers and policy makers in the shipping industry with an framework for strategies that could effectively deal with the crisis.

  • 발주잔량의 감소와 세계경기 회복기조 등을 감안할 때, 수급여건은 저점에 근접해 있다. 그러나, 해상물동량 증가율의 둔화, 대형선박 위주로 되살아난 발주 등을 감안할 때, 운임지수 등 시황회복은 상대적으로 느리게 진행될 전망이다. 2012년부터 상위선사의 뚜렷한 실적차별화가 나타나고 있으며, 국내선사는 상대적으로 취약한 선종다각화와 자본력, 계열 및 정부의 저조한 지원 등으로 금융위기 이후 재무구조가 가장 큰 폭으로 악화되었다. 상위선사의 실적우위는 일시적 차이가 아닌 선박의 대형화와 높은 연료효율성, 우수한 글로벌 네트워크 등 구조적 원가경쟁력의 차이에 기인하고 있다. 상위 3개 선사는 초대형선박의 추가인수와 P3 Network 구축으로 원가경쟁력이 더욱 향상될 전망이며, 재무여력을 갖춘 경쟁선사들도 선박가격이 낮은 상황에서 고효율의 대형선박을 발주, 원가경쟁력을 제고하고 있다. 반면에 호황기 고가에 선박을 확보한 국내선사는 과중한 재무부담으로 인해 선박대형화와 글로벌 네트워크 구축에 동침하지 못하고 있어 원가경쟁력의 차이는 더욱 심화될 전망이다. 더딘 시황회복과 상위선사의 단위당 운송비(Unit Cost) 하락 등을 감안할 때, 빠른 시일 내에 운임상승을 통한 큰 폭의 성과개선을 기대하기 어렵고, 과중한 재무부담은 투자여력의 위축으로 이어지고 있다. 여기에 중국 유럽선사가 정부로부터 대규모의 직접적 지원(대출, 지급보증)을 제공받고 있는데 반하여, 우리 정부는 장기적 관점의 지원이나 대책을 유보한 채, 제한된 유동성 지원만을 하고 있다. 재무부담에 따른 악순환을 깨고 원가경쟁력을 확보하기 위해선, 비핵심자산 매각, 자본유치 등 구조조정을 통한 재무구조 개선, 투자여력 확보를 통한 글로벌 경쟁력 회복, 정부차원의 지원과 조정 등 가능한 모든 방안을 총 동원하여 재무구조를 개선하고 투지에 나서는 것이 시급하다. 하지만, 불황으로 체력이 소진된 해운사의 자체적인 노력만으로는 한계가 있다. 기간산업의 국가경쟁력 차원에서 국내 선사의 자체노력은 물론, 정부 또는 금융기관 등 유관기관들의 확실한 지원이나 의사결정이 필요한 시점이다. 그렇지 않을 경우 국내 해운산업은 어두운 터널의 끝을 벗어나지 못하고 글로벌 경쟁사와의 격차는 더욱 벌어지게 될 것이다. 다음은 한국신용평가에서 발표한 "풍전등화 국내 해운업계, 본원적 대책 마련 시급"의 주요 내용을 요약 정리한 것이다.

  • The competition between ship management companies is fierce as a result of global trend towards increased specialization. In order for ship management companies to remain competitive, it is necessary to understand the local and global factors and the changing circumstances that impact shipping markets and trade patterns. To better understand these factors, a study and analysis of drawing priority of the competitiveness-evaluation factors of ship management companies was conducted using Analytical Hierarchy Process(AHP) as a method dealing with dicision-making problem. As a consequence of this analysis, it was determined that human resources, both shipboard and land management, were a primary factor in ship management company's competitiveness. Thus, the acquisition and retention of capable staff was a key aspect of assuring a ship management company's competitiveness.

  • In Korea's ship finance, due to the nature of pro-cyclical investment, the private sector's ship finance greatly shrinks during the shipping recession, and policy financial institutions take the lead in ship finance. Meanwhile, the government established the 「Strategy for the Realization of Shipping Industry Leader」 (June 29, '2) and set a development goal by 2030 through support such as securing new high-efficiency ships. To promote financial investment. However, investment in the shipping industry is not easy to induce due to risks and uncertain market conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to review tax benefits that can induce joint investment of investors at the government level. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a Korean version of tax lease scheme for ships in order to resolve the liquidity gap in the domestic ship finance market and successfully implement the five-year plan for reconstruction of shipping industry.

Analysis of the Synchronization between Global Dry Bulk Market and Chinese Container Market (글로벌 건화물 운임시장과 중국 컨테이너 운임시장 간의 동조성 분석)

  • The purpose of this investigation is to analyze the synchronization between the representative global freight index, the Baltic Dry bulk Index (BDI) and the China Container Freight Index (CCFI) with monthly data from 2000 to 2016. Using the non-stationarity of the business cycle that is able to include common trends, we employ the Engle-Granger 2 stage co-integration test and found no synchronization. On the contrary, we additionally estimated the causality between the markets and revealed the causality, which implies that the Chinese economy has a significant effect on the global market. The results of this empirical analysis demonstrate that the CCFI of China is appropriate for analyzing the shipping industry. In practice, this means that it is more appropriate to include CCFI in the global market outlook than use it as a substitute for the global freight rate index, the BDI. This is a case study of the synchronization of the economic fluctuations of the shipping industry. It suggests that the economic fluctuations of China need to be considered in the unstable global market forecast. In particular, this case applies to the fluctuations in the shipping industry synchronism and provides important results in scientific terms.

  • The focus of this study is to analyse dynamic relationship among BDI(Baltic Dry-bulk Index, hereafter BDI), forex market and industrial production using monthly data from 2003-2013. Specifically, we have focused on the investigations how monetary and real variable affect shipping industry during recession period. To compare performance between general VAR and Bayesian VAR we first examine DAG(Directed Acyclic Graph) to clarify causality among the variables and then employ MSFE(mean squared forecast error). The overall estimated results from impulse-response analysis imply that BDI has been strongly affected by other shock, such as forex market and industrial production in Bayesian VAR. In particular, Bayesian VAR show better performance than general VAR in forecasting.

해운이슈 - 미국 재정긴축 및 신용등급 강등의 효과분석

  • 2002년 이후 지속되어온 미국의 재정적자가 금융위기 중 확대되면서 미국 국가채무가 2012년에는 GDP를 초과할 것으로 전망된다. 미 의회는 5개월 이상 협상을 지속한 결과 2011년 8월 1일 국가채무 한도 상향조정을 포함한 예산통제법을 통과시켜 국가부도사태는 발발하지 않았다. 이러한 미 의회의 국가채무 한도 상향 조정에도 불구하고, S&P는 지난 8월 3일 미국의 국가신용등급을 AAA에서 AA+로 강등하였으며, 주식시장의 경우도 미국의 재정지출 감축으로 인한 경기회복지연, 신용등급 강등 영향으로 인한 국제금융시장의 위험자산 회피현상으로 급락하였다. 미국 재정지출 감축과 위험자산 회피현상에 따른 우리나라의 국내총생산 감소는 미미할 것으로 분석되지만, 재정긴축 계획으로 향후 5년 동안 미국 경제에 평균 -0.5%정도의 GDP 감소 효과가 있으며, 우리나라 GDP도 평균적으로 -0.02% 정도 감소시킬 것이다. 이에 따라 우리나라 기업들도 미국 재정긴축 및 신용등급 강등으로 인하여 발생할 수 있는 사항들을 다각적으로 분석하여 대처를 할 필요성이 제기되고 있다. 다음은 대외경제정책연구원에서 발표한 "미국 재정긴축 및 신용등급 강등의 효과분석"의 주요 내용을 정리 요약한 것이다.
