Empirical Assessment of International Entry Strategy for Large Construction Companies (주요 전략지수별로 살펴 본 국내 대형건설업체의 해외건설 진출전략 효과에 대한 실증적 연구)

  • Although international construction market gradually takes a important position among the export industries, the previous studies about international construction entry strategy have just focussed on trend investigation or suggestion for revitalization. Moreover, in order to prepare the market uncertainty such as world financial crisis and to plan the long term strategy, specific strategy studies based on corporate level are required. Therefore, this study estimates the nine strategic index and four financial index of 31 companies that performed 1920 international projects from 1993 to 2007 and evaluate the performance as three periods by multi-regression analysis. Also, this study analyze dynamic correlation between these index and the performance considering times. this study verifies that market diversification, product diversification, localization and decrease of debt to asset ratio make a good effect on the international order as long term strategy and shows that collaborated entry with domestic corporations, alliance entry with host country's company, alliance entry with third country's company, portion of labor cost and portion of management expense differently make a influence on the performance as times. these results will be helpful for the construction companies to plan the international entry strategy reasonably and specifically.

  • Recently, construction industry has came to a crisis due to stagnation and saturation of the domestic construction market. So, many construction companies in Korea has turned their eyes upon extending the business market abroad, in order to overcome such obstacles. Even though the overseas expansion has been exploited since the mid-1960s, there still lies many problems : excessive focusing on the plant construction, a shortsighted policy of government. In this paper. we analyze the characteristics of advancement into overseas construction market and deduce the problems. then propose the new strategies based on SWOT Analysis.

  • Recently, the economic trend of internal enterprises toward the world market appears to exceedingly associate with industrial plants. Such circumstance would limit the diversity of project items and cause various issues of extreme disproportion of overseas construction market at the same time. Consequently, it seems essential to inspect the present state of bookings in the civil engineering and construction fields including the service corps, regarding the former period (from the year 1990 to 1996), the depressed period (from 1997 to 2000), and the latter period of monetary crisis (from 2001 to July 2006), based on the critical situation in foreign exchange occurred in the late 1990's; also important to look into the shifts of the representative items in such fields by regional groups of principal nations throughout the world. Therefore, the current situation of bookings in overseas construction companies should be clarified, and ultimately, appropriate measures should be established.

  • Construction companies do not take necessary steps for sudden change in the Construction market, In order to over come the problem, it is necessary to make Corporate Strategy through correct Market analysis. If construction companies want to secure continuance profits, they must prepare proper strategy to advance into plant market. This research performs both external and internal environment analysis, External environment analysis is for overseas construction market and advanced foreign companies, and internal environment analysis is the current status of domestic companies. The research identifies some of the Key points, growth in foreign plant market is huge, but domestic companies do not have abundant construction experience on the same field and also they lack in high value-added techniques. They are far behind the advanced companies; they don't have proper skills of Procurement, engineering and project management. This study suggests a strategy for domestic companies to take necessary step to advance into plant construction market.

  • R&D projects for land, infrastructure, and transportation is to identify challenges through academic-industrial demand survey, and to promote R&D projects through detailed planning projects. These R&D projects have been promoted to be applied to most domestic project-oriented. Despite continuous R&D investment, the investment has been promoted to the world top technology rather than to international construction projects. This study analyzed the international construction market trends and international construction contracts in order to promote technology development for enhancing international construction competitiveness. This study suggests three R&D technology development directions and ten research projects for expanding international construction projects.
