  • Although island is great worth in ecology, environmental conservation and important territory as a national land for developing the marine, the bottom of the sea and also ecological studying field for the ages to come, it has not been managed because of lack of a scientific surveying. In the case of a cadastral record, inaccessible islands have not been registered in current cadastral record because of the limit of surveying technology in 1910. Therefore, a scientific investigation and systematic management about unregistered islands are necessary. But, a airborne laser scanning system is possible to acquire an accurate positions with digital images about inaccessible islands. Therefore, scientific detection of unregistered islands became possible. This paper presented the results of the shoreline extraction around the Heuksan island using Lidar data and the detection of unregistered islands comparing the cadastral map to the ortho-image. Also, we presented the extraction technique of unregistered islands by calculating their positions and areas. As a result, we extracted effectively 16 unregistered islands around the Heuksan island.

  • The coastline of Hampyung Bay, southwestern coast of Korea, was examined and measured in the field for the understanding of geomorphic changes and sea-cliff erosion processes. The Hampyung-Bay coastline is characterized by steep-face slope and soft soil and/or intensively weathered rock composition. Saw teeth-shaped coastline, and relict weathered basement-rock and "Island Stack" exposed on the beach surface are peculiar geomorphic features indicating active sea-cliff erosion. The coastline in the study area is continuously retreating with the following cyclic process: erosion of cliff base, gravitational landslide or mass wasting, formation of talus, and then erosion and removal of talus. In this study, sea-level rise during summer in the west coast of Korea is suggested as one of the key factors fur the removal of soil taluses and, thereby, accelerating sea-cliff erosion.f erosion.

  • This study analyzed characteristics and tendencies of seasonal change on shoreline and beach with 8 beaches at East Sea coast by topographical survey for 2 years from March 2012 to February 2013. The shorelines of East Sea coast appeared that amount of seasonal change was bigger than amount of annual change. The seasonal change tendencies between Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do coast areas existed some regional differences. To synthesize seasonal changes on 8 beaches of East Sea coast, shoreline advance and beach deposit showed clearly in summer and shoreline retreat and beach erosion showed clearly in autumn. This result is different from tendencies of seasonal change in many mid-latitude coast areas of the world, but generally corresponds with reference studies in west coast and east coast. The major factor of beach erosion showing mostly in summer is storm wave caused by typhoon. The beach erosion by storm wave also occurred in late winter. And it assumes that the beach deposit showing mostly in autumn is result of equilibrium processes of coast area against strong erosion in summer.

  • Eulsukdo located in the Nakdong Estuary plays important role in ecosystem and coastal wetland. There have been various changes in Eulsukdo up to now. Recently, we expect a great change of the western part of shoreline in Eulsukdo due to the floodgate construction but there is few databases. In this study, shorelines were digitized after we had produced the ortho-images by using aerial photos taken for 30 years(8 times). SCE, NSM and EPR were analysed by DSAS 4.2 program using vector data. In addition, the changes of shoreline were analysed in October 2011 from before Eulsukdo water gate construction to now by adding field surveying with VRS. The amount of years shoreline change is -0.34m/yr in 2009(before water gate construction) and -0.50m/yr in 2011(during the water gate construction), and the change trend shows an accumulation aspect.

  • The existing field survey and aerial photography involve the waste of manpower and economic loss in the coastline survey. To minimize these disadvantages, the digitization for efficient coastline extraction was conducted in this study using the points extracted from the standard coastline of the approximate highest high water and the diverse satellite images (KOMPSAT-3, SPOT-5, Landsat-8 and Quickbird-2), and the comparative accuracy analysis was conducted. The differences between the standard coastline points of the approximate highest high water and the coastline of each satellite were smallest for KOMPSAT-3, followed by Quickbird-2, SPOT-5 and Landsat-8. The significant probability from between the multipurpose applications satellite and Quickbird-2 (significant probability two-tailed) was statistically significant at 1% significance level. Therefore, high-resolution satellite images are required to efficiently extract the coastline, and KOMPSAT-3, from which images are easily acquired at a low cost, will enable the most efficient coastline extraction without external support.

  • Coastal erosion and its impact on human activities as well as the economic damage and environmental conservation of coastal area is one of major concern in the national policies. In this study, we conducted physical investigations to evaluate effects of erosion in the Geojin beach, which is located nearby the Geojin Port, for a detecting of shoreline change and beach cross-sectional area. The results showed that significant coastal erosion of the Geojin beach has occurred by the complex resources of natural factor, such as rising sea level, storm surges, high wave, and man-made construction. Especially, due to the sand supplement from Jasan river, the section which is nearby the estuary of Jasan river is maintained as a stable beach, whereas beach erosion of the other site in GW04 section has been increased indeed. Therefore, we suggest that it is need to continuous monitoring using DGPS and various surveying techniques to prevent beach erosion onto the GW04 section.

  • This paper aims to investigate morphological changes of deltaic barrier islands in the Nakdong Estuary and especially their spatial variations after barrage construction. We analyzed shorelines, geometrical centroids, and areas to reveal the changes of barrier islands. Here, we suggest three interesting points from this study. First, each individual barrier island in the Nakdong estuary goes through a different stage of the geomorphic cycle. The frontal barrier islands such as Sinja-do and Doyo-deung grow because they are located in front of the gates of the barrage. Sediments in water out of the gates are moved to offshore and then reworked by coastal processes such as waves and tides. Second, on the contrary, Baekhap-deung located behind Doyo-deung now diminishes indicating that sediments mainly move to the frontal growing island. Third, there is no morphological change in several barrier islands far away from the main flow of the Nakdong river such as Jinwoo-do, Daema-deung, and Jangja-do. In conclusion, barrier islands in the Nakdong estuary show distinct spatial variations. As a barrier island is closer to the main channel or is in the frontal location, there happens a very dynamic change in the morphology of the island.

  • Currently, looking at the field of producing national coastlines, the lengths of coastlines are inaccurate due to the vague definition of dividing coastline boundaries and insufficient observation data. The level of accuracy and reliability of previous data are also in the very low. This paper used aerial photographs with certain intervals to monitor the change in coastal areas of Songjeong, Haeundae, Kwanganri, Songdo and Dadaepo. The local area subjected for this research was limited to areas near Busan. Launching quantitative/time series analyses on the change of coastal areas using aortal photographs, satellite image data and RTK-GPS surveys. And developing an automatic edge detection program to extract coastlines, suggesting the performance of the program and analyzing the efficiency of the program.
