  • The purpose of this article is to devise the activities based on van Hiele levels of geometric thought using computer software, Geometer\\\\`s Sketchpad(GSP) as a tool. The most challenging task facing teachers of geometry is the development of student facility for understanding geometric concepts and properties. The National Council of teachers of Mathematics(Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, 1991; Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, 2000) and the National Re-search Council(Hill, Griffiths, Bucy, et al., Everybody Counts, 1989) have supported the development of exploring and conjecturing ability for helping students to have mathematical power. The examples of the activities built is GSP for students ar designed to illustrate the ways in which van Hiele\\\\`s model can be implemented into classroom practice.

  • Let $CS_\alpha(\beta)$ denote the class of normalized strongly $\alpha$-close-to-convex functions of order $\beta$, defined in the open unit disk $\cal{U}$ of $\mathbb{C}$${\mid}arg{(1-{\alpha})\frac{f(z)}{g(z)}+{\alpha}\frac{zf'(z)}{g(z)}}{\mid}\;\leq\frac{\pi}{2}{\beta}(\alpha,\beta\geq0)$ such that $g\; \in\;S^{\ask}$, the class of normalized starlike unctions. In this paper, we obtain the sharp Fekete-Szego inequalities for functions belonging to $CS_\alpha(\beta)$.

  • Let R be a prime ring with characteristic different from two and let $\theta,\varphi,\sigma,\tau$ be the automorphisms of R. Let d : $R{\rightarrow}R$ be a nonzero ($\theta,\varphi$)-derivation. We prove the following results: (i) if $a{\in}R$ and [d(R), a]$_{{\theta}o{\sigma},{\varphi}o{\tau}}$=0, then $\sigma(a)\;+\;\tau(a)\;\in\;Z$, the center of R, (ii) if $d([R,a]_{\sigma,\;\tau)\;=\;0,\;then\;\sigma(a)\;+\;\tau(a)\;\in\;Z$, (iii) if $[ad(x),\;x]_{\sigma,\;\tau}\;=\;0;for\;all\;x\;\in\;RE$, then a = 0 or R is commutative.

  • Let $\cal{K}$ be the extension Hilbert space of a Hilbert space $\cal{H}$ and let $\Phi$ be the faithful $\ast$-representation of $\cal{B}(\cal{H})$ on $\cal{k}$. In this paper, we show that if T is an irreducible ${\omega}-hyponormal$ operators such that $ker(T)\;{\subset}\;ker(T^{*})$ and $T^{*}T\;-\;TT^{\ast}$ is compact, then $\sigma_{e}(T)\;=\;\sigma_{e}(\Phi(T))$.

  • Let $\gamma$ be a $C_2$ curve in the open unit disk $\mathbb{D}. Flinn and Osgood proved that $K_{\mathbb{D}}(z,\gamma){\geq}1$ for all $z{\in}{\gamma}$ if and only if the curve ${\Large f}o{\gamma}$ is convex for every convex conformal mapping $\Large f$ of $\mathbb{D}, where $K_{\mathbb{D}}(z,\;\gamma)$ denotes the hyperbolic curvature of $\gamma$ at the point z. In this paper we establish a generalization of the Flinn-Osgood characterization for a curve with the hyperbolic curvature at least 1.

  • Children interest themselves in all different toys they see, before beginning to speak. The psychological reasons for children′s interest in toys have been investigated for a long time. Thus many scientists have studied on the question "what is game?", but they have not reached a consensus yet. Such contradiction may be dependent upon different points of view of the researchers about game. Besides, the view of game of a child and an adult is different too. According to an adult game is a rebirth and escape from monotony. For child it is a work. The aim of this study is to make mathematics regarding a mass of abstract concepts for the students of grade 1-3 of primary school in the concrete operations period, more attractive with the help of educational and instructional games, and to contribute to student′s developing. The capability of thinking and producing by changing abstract concepts into concrete ones.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate responses or phenomena shown by the students in the process of manipulative activities in order to use manipulatives effectively in the elementary school geometry classes. The fualitative study used for this research analyzed phenomena in the process of learning programs offered to students. The five participants of this research were selected from the third graders at C Elementary School in Seoul city. The researcher recorded all the activities of students, watching them thoroughly and extracting significant statements from each description. These statements were formulated by their meanings, and then those meanings were analyzed into classified themes. The results through this research are as follows: First, previous activities affected later activities positively in the conjoining case, but negatively in the disjoining case and hence it required adventurous thinking. Second, students tried various attempts for solving given problems.

  • Many partial differential equations defined on a rectangular domain can be solved numerically by using a domain decomposition method. The most commonly used decompositions are the domain being decomposed in stripwise and rectangular way. Theories for non-overlapping domain decomposition(in which two adjacent subdomains share an interface) were often focused on the stripwise decomposition and claimed that extensions could be made to the rectangular decomposition without further discussions. In this paper we focus on the comparisons of the two ways of decompositions. We consider the unconditionally stable scheme, the MIP algorithm, for solving parabolic partial differential equations. The SOR iterative method is used in the MIP algorithm. Even though the theories are the same but the performances are different. We found out that the stripwise decomposition has better performance.

  • We Investigate the relation between the multi-variable bi-additive functional equation f(x+y+z,u+v+w)=f(x,u)+f(x,v)+f(x,w)+f(y,u)+f(y,v)+f(y,w)+f(z,u)+f(z,v)+f(z,w) and the multi-variable quadratic functional equation g(x+y+z)+g(x-y+z)+g(x+y-z)+g(-x+y+z)=4g(x)+4g(y)+4g(z). Furthermore, we find out the general solution of the above two functional equations.

  • This study explored teachers (n = 219) from northern, central, southern and eastern Taiwan concerning their views about children's learning difficulties, mathematical instruction and school mathematics curricular. Results showed that teachers' mathematics knowledge or their instruction methods had no significant influence on their views of children's learning difficulties. Even though teachers indicated that understanding of abstract mathematical concepts was the most prominent difficulty for children, they tended to employ direct instruction rather than constructive and cooperative problem solving in their teaching. However, teachers' views of children's learning difficulties did influence their instructional practice. Results from in-dept interviews revealed that there were some obstacles that prevented teachers from putting constructiveism perspectives of instruction into teaching practice. Further investigation is needed to develop a better understanding of epistemology and teaming psychology as well as to help teachers create constructive learning situations.
