Research Synthesis of Gender Differences in Korean Science Education Journals (성 차이 경향 파악을 위한 국내 과학 교육 문헌 분석)

  • This study analyzed all of the research articles published in six of the Korean science education journals in the past three decades. The purpose of this research synthesis was to identify gender differences in hundreds of research articles accomplished at the personal, local, and national level that have repeatedly been reported in several international comparative studies. There were few of articles that focused on gender issues, but 279 articles presented a result of gender issues separately. Of the 279 articles, we finally analyzed 225 research articles for a statistical significance. The articles were divided into two types of research method: test-based studies and experiment-based studies. The results of research synthesis in test-based studies were as follows: The largest number of studies reported male superiority in science knowledge and science-related attitude, which is similar to the results of recent international studies. In particular, gender differences were the biggest in science-related attitudes and the least in scientific process skills. The result of research synthesis in experimental studies was that the largest number of articles did not show significant gender differences in the effect of the applied program. It is noteworthy that the applied science education programs tend to be more effective in improving female students' scientific attitude and male students' science knowledge. It is necessary to develop more gender-inclusive science programs for female students to feel science more positively.

  • The ODP (Ocean Drilling Program) has been greatly contributed to the progress of Earth Science through the strong international cooperation with its name changed from DSDP DSDP(Deep Sea Drilling Program), IPOD (International Phase of Ocean Drilling) to IODP (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program). The IODP program which was launched about ten years ago will continue to develop toward the 2nd phase of scientific targets through the tight international cooperation. Distinguished scientific results from the various expedition as well as new phase of IODP structure and its important role that enhance the new scientific fields are summarized in this study. In particular, Arctic Expedition and deep-biosphere and high resolution climatic study that was not performed in previous ODP stages, will be extensively conducted in coming new 2nd IODP stages. Likewise, through strong international cooperation, it is expected that IODP would play an important role in Earth Science developments.

The Development and Application of Assessment Standards for the Reflection of Science Museum Exhibitions in the Curriculum: A Case Study of the Contents of Earth Science in Elementary School (과학관 전시의 교육 과정 반영에 대한 평가 기준 개발 및 적용 - 초등학교 지구과학 내용을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and apply assessment standards for the reflection of science museum exhibitions in science curriculum. Assesment standards were developed based on the national achievement standards for earth science in elementary school. The researchers measured the reflection level and evaluation scale by applying the developed assesment standards to exhibitions in the National Science Museum. The results of this study showed that the reflection level and evaluation scale of science curriculum far elementary school in the National Science Museum were measured as 52% and 3.53 respectively. Especially, the level of the reflection of science curriculum in the National Science Museum was found to be at the high level in Geologic field and Astronomic field. These results indicate that the National Science Museum as an informal education institute is comparatively well connected to science education of elementary school. Science museum should be connected with school education and it should start after a substantial reflection on the curriculum. For this, science museum need to develop standards that reflect science curriculum. From this point of view, the results of this study can be used as basic data that evaluate the level of connection between science museum and school education and that guide the direction of development of science curriculum.

Analysis of High School Students' Understanding Levels about Earth Science terms Written in Chinese Characters (한자로 된 지구과학 용어에 대한 고등학생의 이해 수준)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze high school students' understanding levels about earth science terms written in Chinese characters according to learners' characteristics. In order to investigate how the responses vary according to their characteristics, first of all, proper scientific terms are selected, and then corre sponding questions about them are offered as subjects, which consists of a Korean characters type, a picture type, and a Korean and Chinese characters type. During paper test and interview, the questions are given to fifteen students from general high schools in Jecheon, Chungbuk Province. The results of the study are as follows; Students in formal operation level and field-independency answered very well and also the terms of Chinese characters type and picture type improve the students' understanding and memorization. Generally, Chinese characters have more positive influence on their learning than the negative. Therefore, in general, it seems that it's more effective to explain the sound and meaning of terms in detail and to give learners enough time to draw a picture about each term by themselves when scientific terms are delivered to students in Chinese characters in class.

Rare Earth Elements of Atmospheric Particulates (PM2.5) in Northeast Asia: Beijing and Gwangju (동북아시아 초미세먼지의 희토류 원소 특성 비교: 북경과 광주)

  • Rare earth elements (REEs) have been used as one of power tracers for understanding geological and environmental changes due to their similar physico-chemical properties. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of rare earth elements in atmospheric particulates(PM2.5) collected in Beijing and Gwangju during January 2018. The total concentrations of REEs in the Beijing samples were about 16X higher than those in Gwangju samples, and both samples are enriched in light REE than heavy REE, up to 8-10 times. The Post Archean Australian Shale (PAAS)-normalized pattern showed that both samples are enriched in Eu, Tb, and Er, and displayed positive Eu but negative Ce anomalies. The elemental correlations indicate that both samples originated from China desert and Loess plateau as well as cities surrounding Beijing. This study suggests that REEs in PM2.5 can be used as a powerful proxy of revealing the difference between China and Korea, and provide basic information on the source and transport of PM2.5.

Effect of a Coupled Atmosphere-ocean Data Assimilation on Meteorological Predictions in the West Coastal Region of Korea (대기-해양 결합 자료동화가 서해 연안지역의 기상예측에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • The effect of coupled data assimilation (DA) on the meteorological prediction in the west coastal region of Korea was evaluated using a coupled atmosphere-ocean model (e.g., COAWST) in the spring (March 17-26) of 2019. We performed two sets of simulation experiments: (1) with the coupled DA (i.e., COAWST_DA) and (2) without the coupled DA (i.e., COAWST_BASE). Overall, compared with the COAWST_BASE simulation, the COAWST_DA simulation showed good agreement in the spatial and temporal variations of meteorological variables (sea surface temperature, air temperature, wind speed, and relative humidity) with those of the observations. In particular, the effect of the coupled DA on wind speed was greatly improved. This might be primarily due to the prediction improvement of the sea surface temperature resulting from the coupled DA in the study area. In addition, the improvement of meteorological prediction in COAWST_DA simulation was also confirmed by the comparative analysis between SST and other meteorological variables (sea surface wind speed and pressure variation).

Development of a Python-based Algorithm for Image Analysis of Outer-ring Galaxies (외부고리 은하 영상 분석을 위한 파이썬 기반 알고리즘 개발)

  • In this study, we aimed to develop a Python-based outer-ring galaxy analysis algorithm according to the data science process. We assumed that the potential users are citizen scientists, including students and teachers. In the actual classification studies using real data of galaxies, a specialized software called IRAF is used, thereby limiting the general public's access to the software. Therefore, an image analysis algorithm was developed for the outer-ring galaxies as targets, which were compared with those of the previous research. The results of this study were compared with those of studies conducted using IRAF to verify the performance of the newly developed image analysis algorithm. Among the 69 outer-ring galaxies in the first test, 50 cases (72.5%) showed high agreement with the previous research. The remaining 19 cases (27.5%) showed differences that were caused by the presence of bright stars overlapped in the line of sight or weak brightness in the inner galaxy. To increase the usability of the finished product that has undergone a supplementary process, all used data, algorithms, Python code files, and user manuals were loaded in GitHub and made available as shared educational materials.

Understanding of the Linguistic Features of Earth Science Treatises: Register Analysis Approach (지구과학 논문의 언어 특성 이해: 레지스터 분석)

  • This study identified the linguistic features of Earth science treatises through the analysis of the register. Data included three Korean treatises that were in geology, atmospheric science, and oceanography. The register of Earth science treatise was as follows: First, there were semantic, referential connections between Themes and Rhemes, that the messages and main points of the texts were expressed coherently and cohesively. Second, some predicates were used which were related to deductive inference, abductive inferences, or causal relation according to the genre elements of each text. The logical relations were not represented by the conjunctions but by the types of predicates. Third, most texts in the treatises showed interpersonally weak relationship using mental predicates related to possibilities, which meant scientists expressed indirectly their interpretation, explanation, or arguments. From these results, we argued that some activities of unpacking the language of science be included in science curriculum in order to improve students' literacy of science texts and understanding scientists' knowledge construction.

The Effect of High School Earth Science Instruction Using Mind Map (마인드 맵을 활용한 고등학교 지구과학 수업의 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effect that using mind map instruction has on the students' scientific inquiry skill and science-related attitudes in 11th grade in the earth science instruction. The objects of this study were consisted of two classes with 11th graders at K public high school in Kimhea city. The experimental group using mind map was lessoned 2 hours a week for 10 weeks. On the other hand, the controlled group was traditionally taught. Each group was consisted of 34 students. Student's science inquiry skills and science-related attitudes were assessed in pre-test, and then each group was instructed. The post-test was conducted after the instruction. Findings were as follows: First, As for the scientific inquiry skill, the result revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. This finding means that the mind map instruction was more effectiveto improve students' scientific inquiry skills. Second, Regarding the science-related attitudes, the t-test analysis showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups. This result implies that the mind map instruction was more effective in promoting students' attitudes toward science. In conclusion, the earth science instruction using mind map showed more effectiveness on the high school students' improvement of their science inquiry skills and science-related attitudes.
