  • This study was attempted to investigate indoor air quality of a wooden house. Emission characteristics of carbonyl compounds from indoors whose interiors were finished using ecofriendly materials were detected. From the results of the examination, the carbonyl compounds mostly consisted of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and hexaldehyde. Especially, formaldehyde accounted for the largest portion of the compounds at 25.6~30.5%. All the rooms except for R2-2 contained formaldehyde less than criteria of indoor air quality of newly-constructed houses. In addition, all the rooms except for room R1-3, contained acetaldehyde more than the level of $48{\mu}g/m^3$ recommended by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. As a results of the different wall covering, the room R1-1 of Hwangto emitted relatively higher levels of carbonyl compounds than the room R2-1 of phytoncide. In addition, the room R2-2 of the bamboo charcoal panels emitted more carbonyl compounds than the room R1-2. The living room R1-3 of Japanese cypress (Cryptomeria Japonica) emitted lower levels of carbonyl compounds than other rooms.

  • This study is to examine the determinants of the elderly poverty by using the Decision-tree analysis. In line with this perspective, this study includes individual characteristics, family characteristics, working characteristics, and periodic income characteristics after retirement as determinants for senior poverty. The study uses data from the Korean Retirement and Income Study based on panel survey and employs the Decision-tree analysis to explain the causes of the elderly poverty. As the result of analysis, earned wage has the greatest effect on the elderly poverty. Depending on status of the earned wage, there are 2 different variable groups. One with no earned wage includes public pension, education, and residence, paid employee and gender in the other with earned wage. Based on the analytical results, the study suggests measures to address the elderly poverty.

  • The present study examined the impact of work stress and job satisfaction on intention to leave among staff including social workers, nurses, and care workers. The study subject included 235 staff in a welfare organization that provides long-term care services. Data was analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings of the study show that work stress and job satisfaction affect intention to leave in the context of welfare organizations. Demographic variables were not the main focus of this study and thus these results are incidental. Staff with higher levels of work stress were more likely to think about leaving, while those with grater job satisfaction were less likely. There were several limitations in this study. Generalizability of the findings are limited to staff working in the province of Jeonnam. The results have important implications for the development of strategies to minimize turnover intention in long-term care. Reducing the intent to leave is desirable for issues of both cost reduction and quality of care. Managers could perhaps start to consider decreasing work overload assigned to staff. This study also provides some insight into the work status of new staff. Clearly this finding needs to be explored in further research studies. A more comprehensive model is likely required to adequately explain intention to leave the job.

  • This study purported to examine the effects of precarious employment and social capital on the changes of self-rated health status among the middle aged and the young-old population in South Korea. The study analyzed 12 year follow-up data generated by the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS 6-17), which included 10532 employed subjects aged 55 to 75. Multi-level growth curve modeling was performed by fixed and random effect models using STATA 13.0 program. Afterwards, Hausman test was performed, which resulted in support of the estimation by fixed effect model. The results showed that a day labor position was significant factor affecting the deteriorated changes of self-rated health status over time. In addition, wage, weekly working hours, and private/relational social capitals were also found to be significant factors affecting the changes of the self-rated health status. The results supported the divergence hypothesis as well as the cumulative advantage theory. Efforts should be made to develop and implement various employment support policies and social service programs to alleviate the health inequality of the employed workers over their middle-aged to young-old period.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors associated with the incidence and the transition of disability among Korean older adults. Samples consist of 1,454(42.7%) men and 2,032(58.3%) women aged 65 and over who participated in the 1st and 2nd wave of the Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging: KLOSA. To estimate the level of disability, ADL and IADL disability indexes are used. As the results, major risk factors for ADL/IADL disability incidence include injury, vision problem, cognitive function, depression, health behavior, socioeconomic characteristics and age. Among the normal older adults, the odds ratio of having dementia symptoms at 2nd wave(2008) are 2.0 times greater for the older adults who have less cognitive function than those who don't have at 1st wave(2006). Among the older adults with chronic diseases, the odds ratio of having disability at 2nd wave are 1.8 times greater for the older persons who have depression than those who don't have at 1st wave. Secondly, concerning the predictors affecting the disability transition among the disabled older adults at 1st wave, the likelihood of remaining at the same level or deteriorating the level of IADL disability, as compared with improving the level, is associated with having less instrumental support or being older. These results indicate that it is necessary to prefer multilevel intervention in order not only to prevent the incidence of disability, but also to prolong the deterioration of disability in the older adults.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the structural relationships among the Big Five personality traits, self-esteem, job satisfaction, and life satisfaction of employees and to investigate how these relationships vary depend on gender. Using data from 1183 employees from the 18th and 19th Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) in 2015 and 2016, we investigate the structural relationships among variables including multi-group path analysis by gender. This study found that openness to experience(${\beta}=.07$), conscientiousness(${\beta}=.19$), and extraversion(${\beta}=.09$) were positively associated with employees' self-esteem while neuroticism was negatively associated(${\beta}=-.09$). Second, only neuroticism among the Big Five personality traits was significantly related to job satisfaction(${\beta}=.08$). Third, conscientiousness(${\beta}=.08$) and agreeableness(${\beta}=.09$) were significantly related to life satisfaction. Fourth, self-esteem positively affected career satisfaction(${\beta}=.31$) and life satisfaction(${\beta}=.29$). Fifth, self-esteem mediated the links between all Big Five personality traits, except agreeableness, as well as job and life satisfaction. Sixth, the effect of extraversion on life satisfaction had differences between male and female. These results imply that self-esteem enhancement program based on the Big Five personality traits should be implemented in order to improve employee's job and life satisfaction.

  • This study's goal is to compare influencing factors to life satisfaction and sport participation of the elderly in the rural and urban area. And it is to provide basic information that is appropriate to the local peculiarity. In the research, we used the 2006 KLoSA, got the following result through the more than 60 years old 502 peoples in the rural area and 1129 in the urban area. There were significant differences of factors related to the life satisfaction between rural and urban elderly, and the most sport participants have higher life satisfaction than non-participants. Through the probit analysis, the result shows that significant factors affecting sport participation for the rural elderly are gender, age, working/retired, and for urban elderly, the education level and income are added. About the participation, there were also significant differences on the participation frequency for the rural elderly and on the participation hours for urban elderly. The significant factors of life satisfaction for rural elderly are the education level, subjective health, and sport participation, and for urban elderly were the education level, income, subjective health, and sport participation. Overall, it shows the urban elderly have higher life satisfaction than the rural elderly. The welfare system to improve the sports participation and life satisfaction needs the differentiated support reflecting the social demographic characteristics.

  • Using data from Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging (KLoSA), this study examines how continuity and change of marital status is associated with health over time among older women, focusing on the moderating effects of age and parent-child relationships. KLoSA data set has two waves of interviews, and for this study, 2046 women aged 65 and over were selected. To analyze data, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used. The major findings are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in health between continuously married older women and continuously single older women. However, older women who had transition from being married to being single showed lower physical health than continuously married and continuously single older women. Second, there were statistically significant differences in the effect of marital status on mental health according to the age of older women. Older women who had transition from being married to being single showed lower mental health than continuously married elders when older women were younger. Third, contact with children moderated the effect of marital status on physical health. Older women who had transition from being married to being single showed lower physical health than continuously single and continuously married older women when older women had less contact with their children. The findings imply after the loss of marital role, older women's relationship with adult children plays a significant role in promoting health. In conclusion, the findings of this study show the different pathways through which marital status is associated with health for 3 different groups of older women, being continuously single, being continuously married, and making transition from being married to being single.

  • This study examines dynamics of poverty in Korea, focusing on poverty duration and its determinants. Data come from Korean Labor and Income Panel Study(KLIPS), 1998-2003. KLIPS is a longitudinal survey of 5,000 families and their members which are representative of urban residents in Korea. Respondents of KLIPS annually report detailed information on their income, economic activities, and other socio-economic characteristics. This study use poverty exit probabilities to generate distributions of spell lengths, following Bane and Ellwood(1986)'s methodology. This study finds a high level of poverty exit rates in Korea. About three quarters of those beginning a poverty spell exit from poverty within two years. Only 14.3 percent of all the poverty spells consist of long spells which persists five years or more. Yet, a different picture emerges when spells of the poor persons at a given time are analysed. Persistent poor occupy a considerable share of all the poor. Almost 50 percent of those who would be in poverty at a given time are in the midst of poverty spells lasting five years or more. When repeat spells of poverty are also included in the analyses, the proportion of long-term poor increases further. 63 percent of persons poor at a given time are long-termers. The majority of long-term poor are members of families headed by the aged. They show both a low level of poverty exit rates and a high level of reentry rates, and thus are most likely to experience long-term poverty. In the first place, they occupy a substantial share of all the poor. The second who are likely to be poor longer is members of families headed by non-aged women. Researchers have recentlty paid much attention to the working poor who have increased since the economic crisis in 1997. Yet, it is very likely that families headed by non-aged male who largely consist of the working poor temporarily experience poverty. Findings for this study suggest that further studies and policy proposals addressing persistent poverty are necessary.
