  • Data mining techniques enable us to generate useful information for decision support from the data sources which are generated and accumulated in the process of routine organizational management activities. College administration system is a typical example that produces a warehouse of student records as each and every student enters a college and undertakes the curricular and extracurricular activities. So far, these data have been utilized to a very limited student service purposes, such as issuance of transcripts, graduation evaluation, GPA calculation, etc. In this paper, we utilized Holland career search test results, TOEIC score, course work list and GPA score as the input for data mining, and we were able to generate knowledge and rules with regard to the college road map advisory service. Factor analysis and AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) were the primary techniques deployed in the data mining process. Since these data mining techniques are very powerful in processing and discovering useful knowledge and information from large scale student databases, we can expect a highly sophisticated student advisory knowledge and services which may not be obtained from the human student advice experts.

  • The purpose of this study was to propose instructional methods using base-ten blocks in teaching the multiplication of decimal for 5th grade students by analyzing the process of their conceptual comprehension of multiplication of decimal. The students in this study were found to understand various meanings of operations (e.g., repeated addition, bundling, and area) by modeling them with base-ten blocks. They were able to identify the algorithm through the use of base-ten blocks and to understand the principle of calculations by connecting the manipulative activities to each stage of algorithm. The students were also able to determine whether the results of multiplication of decimal might be reasonable using base-ten blocks. This study suggests that appropriate use of base-ten blocks promotes the conceptual understanding of the multiplication of decimal.

  • Acute triangles and obtuse triangles are defined according to the classification of triangles by angles. The definitions of acute triangles and obtuse triangles are difficult for students because they are related to different logical elements. The purpose of this study is to seek desirable methods for teaching the classification of triangles by angles related to logic. To do this, based on the theoretical consideration and the longitudinal analysis of the elementary mathematics textbooks, some implications are found for teaching. And then the lesson was planned and applied to $4^{th}$ graders. After the lesson, we reviewed and analyzed their worksheets and test results for examining the effects by teaching methods. Based on the result, we discussed and made some didactical suggestions for teaching the classification of triangles by angles.

  • Pattern activities are useful to develop functional thinking of young students, but there has been lack of research on how to teach patterns. This study explored teaching methods of geometric patterns for developing functional thinking of elementary school students, and then analyzed the lessons in which such methods were implemented. For this, three classrooms of fourth grades in elementary schools were selected and three teachers taught geometric patterns on the basis of the same lesson plan. The lessons emphasized noticing the commonality of a given pattern, expanding the noti ce for the commonality, and representing the commonality. The results of this study showed that experience of analyzing the structure of a geometric pattern had a significant impact on how the fourth graders reasoned about the generalized rules of the given pattern and represented them in various methods. This paper closes with several implications to teach geometric patterns in a way to foster functional thinking.

  • This paper examined eight novice elementary teachers' knowledge in terms of the types and sources of students' errors and teaching strategies on plane figures through a questionnaire and teachers' discussion. The teachers tended to predict students' diverse error types, but they attributed the sources of such errors mainly to their characteristics. The analysis of teachers' responses of teaching strategies revealed that they recognized the importance of the teacher's clear explanation and students' own problem-solving, while they were somewhat negative in presenting diverse examples and classifying, drawing, or constructing figures. Building on these results, this paper provides the implications for novice teachers' professional development programs.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate addition strategies of the 1st year elementary school students compared to the strategies recommended by the 7th national curriculum. We used interviewed children's worksheets to analyze the children's strategies. The results of the study showed that the formal strategies the textbook recommended and the children's strategies were so different. Teachers need to articulately comment two strategies when they teach mathematics in the classrooms.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the student's class satisfaction toward PE Teacher's level of teaching ability in an inclusive PE environment. Twelve PE teachers were divided 3 group (upper, middle, lower) according to the their teaching ability in an inclusive PE environment and to analyze student's class satisfaction, 316 students who learned from the 12 PE teachers in an inclusive PE environment participated in the research. The results of the study were as follows. First, there was a statistically significant positive correlation among the satisfaction of teaching behavior, PE environment, exercise ability, and PE score (P<.01). Second, there was a statistically significant difference (p<.001) between group of teacher's teaching ability and satisfaction of teaching behavior. Third, there was a statistically significant difference (p<.001) between group of teacher's teaching ability and satisfaction of PE environment. Forth, there was a statistically significant difference (p<.001) between group of teacher's teaching ability and satisfaction of exercise ability, Fifth, there was a statistically significant difference (p<.001) between group of teacher's teaching ability and satisfaction of PE score.
