A new computerized testing system, called the Computerized Multiple-choice Testing (CMMT) system, was introduced. In this system, questions of multiple choice (MC) items are presented first without options, so that students must generate answers for themselves. They can click for the options when they are ready, and can respond within a brief, specified time period. The present study was performed to examine whether this system is effective in reducing backward reasoning, I. e., using the options of MC items as cues to find the correct answer. One hundred and seventy-seven 6th grade students (12 year olds) were divided into two groups so that mean scores from a prior test were equal: The experimental group took an intervening computerized test in the new format, and the control group in the MC format. Five days after the computerized intervening test, a short answer paper-and-pencil final test was given. Testing effect was greater in the new system than in the MC system. Analysis of the final test response in relation to the intervening test response showed that i) the students retained the correct answer in the new system more than in the MC testing system, and that ii) students corrected their previous failures in the intervening CMMT format more than those in the MC format. These results suggest that the new system is effective in reducing backward reasoning.

This study was designed to examine the effects of self-efficacy and social support on test anxiety among nursing students taking the National Examination for Registered Nurses. A convenience sample of 212 nursing students was obtained from three nursing colleges. Data were collected by a self-administered questionnaire during December 2015. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test, Pearson correlations and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 18.0. The mean score for test anxiety was located in the middle range, with the score of $2.84{\pm}0.53$; those for self-efficacy and social support were located higher in the 1-5 scale, each scoring $3.50{\pm}0.54$ and $3.72{\pm}0.48$. Test anxiety correlated negatively with self-efficacy (r=-.32, p<.001), social support (r=-.27, p<.001), friends support (r=-.21, p=.002), family support (r=-.25, p<.001) and professor support (r=-.14, p=.038). Self-efficacy, family support and gender explained 13.0% of participants' test anxiety (F=11.01, p<.001). The purpose of this study was to design a web-based project learning that is suitable for teaching concepts by studying the motion of the Moon for middle school students and to investigate the effects of the lesson applying designed learning. Designed learning was conducted with 48 ninth graders, who were individually interviewed; 5 males and females students out of the total. The types and factors of the unscientific concepts on the motion of the Moon were analyzed by the pre-test using interviews and questionnaires being evaluated to the degree of concept level that was developed in this study. After the pre-test students were instructed to do the web-based project learning where they could observe the motion of the moon for a month and discuss the results from the observation. After the web-based project learning, the effect of learning was examined by applying the post-test to the students and by analyzing the comparison of the pre-test and the post-test. The web-based project learning was effective for the conceptual change of the motion of the Moon (p<.001). According to the post-test, it positively affected the students and improved their integrated processing skills. We examined the interpersonal competence and characteristics of students in school and in science-gifted education institute. The subjects of this study were 72 students in a university-based science-gifted education institute. We used a mixed method of both qualitative and quantitative research. The questionnaires were used for quantitative research and the narrative contents and interviews were analyzed for qualitative research. We compared their competence in school with those of gifted education institute students through questionnaire, narrative contents, and interviews. The interpersonal competence questionnaire consisted of 46 questions and their own descriptions about interpersonal experiences in school and in science-gifted education institute. In an interview, they explained their answers on the questionnaires with more details. As a result, generally, the science-gifted students evaluated their interpersonal competence higher in school than those in gifted education institute. They showed different interpersonal characteristics in schools and in science-gifted education institutes. This implies implications for the social meaning of the science-gifted education institutes.

Many biologists and various educational associations define evolution as a unifying theme as well as a central idea in biology. In this study, teacher education programs were developed as 18-hour courses on understanding the unified role and significance of evolution in biology, and their effectiveness was tested. As factors for the program content, enhancement of the acceptance of evolution, reinforcement of the conception of evolutionary theory, and recognizing and practicing evolution as the unifying nature of evolution were considered. Hands-on activities, self- and peer-evaluation, and projects based on the small teams including frequent questioning and feedback by instructors were considered methodological factors. Six in-service biology teachers and seven pre-service teachers took part in the programs of the graduate school of H university to testing their effectiveness. They were effective in improving the acceptance of evolution, the understanding of evolutionary mechanism, the perception on the unified role of evolution. The programs also induced a positive change in self-evaluation for knowledge of evolution and perception on importance of evolution in biology. Subsequent studies on whether the changed perceptions of the teachers who participated in the programs reflect on their biology classes in secondary schools after finishing the graduate program are required.
