  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of applying the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR)strategy on the attitude toward science of the elementary fifth grade students whose learning styles have beenidentified. The population of the study constitutes the total of 97 elementary fifth grade students who wereassigned into a comparison (n=48) or experimental group (n=49). To understandhow the QAR strategy potentially influencedscientific attitude, both groups were surveyedin the areas of scientific attitude before and after the experiment. TheKolb's Test was used to identifythe students' learning stylein the experimental group. According tothe learners' learning style, the results have been compared and analyzed. The results of this study are as follows:First, the findings revealed a significant difference in the experimental group students' attitude toward sciencecompared to the comparison group. Second, four learning styles were identified among the studentsin theexperimental group: a) Accommodators (46.9%), b) Convergers (24.5%), c) Divergers (20.4%), and d) Assimilator (8.2%). Following the data analysis, there was no meaningful statistical difference between four groups oflearning styles with respect to their scientific attitude.Applyingthe QAR strategy in a science class seemed toimprove the accommodators, convergers, and divergers' scientific attitude positively.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze 9th grade students' understanding about the earth science terms written by Chinese characters depending on their loaming style and attitudes toward science. The study selected the eight students with the middle level of science achievement and divided into four groups: verbal-high attitude toward science, verbal-low attitude toward science, visual-high attitude toward science, and visual-low attitude toward science learners. Three types of questionnaires including Korean characters type, a picture type, md Korean and Chinese characters type were developed to determine the students' understanding about the earth science terms written by Chinese characters. The results of data indicated that the 9th grade students' understanding showed no significant difference by their different teaming style, and yet demonstrated higher level of understanding in Korean and Chinese characters type questionnaire rather than Korean characters type only or a picture type. On the other hand, the level of students' understandings both in Korean characters type and a picture type was about equal. In conclusion, it seems more effective in students' teaming about the earth science terms written by Chinese characters when they were provided with both Korean and Chinese characters.

  • In the second half of the previous century the composition of the teacher population - and the composition of the pupil and parent population - in the Netherlands gives rise to the name change 'age of secularisation' to 'age of pluralisation'. In previous centuries the (religious or secular) worldview identity of the parents and the educational philosophy of the school were attuned to each other, and merged into a mono-cultural perspective on the identity development of pupils. The basis for both - the upbringing by the parents and the socialisation in the family on the one hand, and the teachers' efforts to enculturate the students at the school on the other - was a similar life orientation. The school choice of the parents was predetermined by their commitment to a particular (religious) worldview, very often inspired by Christianity. The religious identity of their children developed in a clear-cut context. However, in contemporary society plurality dominates, at home and at the school, both in case of the parents and the teachers. A direct relationship with a community of like-minded believers is no longer decisive for parents with varying cultural and religious backgrounds. Instead, a good feeling upon entering the schoolyard or the school building is a convincing argument in the process of school choice. The professional identity development of teachers and the religious identity development of children takes place in a plural context. Our question is: what does this mean for the normative professionalism of the teacher? To answer this research question we make use of the resources of the Dialogical Self Theory (DST) with its core concepts of 'voice' and 'positioning'. After presenting the Dutch dual education system (with public and denominational schools) we provide a lively description of a Dutch classroom situation occurring in a public school, as viewed from the perspective of the teacher. The focus in this description is on performative dialogue as a 'disruptive moment' and on its potential for the hyphenated religious identity development of teachers, which makes up a part of their normative professionalism.

  • This study investigates students' preconceptions about measurement theory; repeating measurements. how to handle repeat measurements, measurement errors, and uncertainty. Thirty students in seventh grade participated in this study. Students' conceptions were elicited using observation and interview notes. Half of the students measured only two times. and none of them more than five times. After repeating measurements, seventy seven percent of them selected result according to their feelings, while only thirteen percent of them calculated the mean. Sixty percent of them regarded the main cause of measurement errors as their mistakes, not as the problems of environment or measuring instrument. Most students thought the main reason of various results by different persons or time period as human. Forty percent of them denied the uncertainty of measurement, while thirty three agreed, and most students thought the reason of uncertainty was due to human imperfection. This study showed more than half of the students did not know how to handle repeat measurements, and they regarded the cause of measurement errors as their mistakes. In addition, they thought the main reason of various measuring results and uncertainty as human.
