Data were obtained from the 2018 Survey on Youth Gambling Problems and analyzed using logistic regressions. The results of this study were as follows: First, Out-of-school adolescents have more problems with the problem gambling severity, experience a decline in academic performance due to gambling, experience of borrowing money from acquaintances of lenders, suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts than school adolescents. Second, regardless of whether they attended school, experience of borrowing money from lenders was identified as significant variable of suicidal ideation and attempt. • The objective of this study was to investigate the problem behavior and its convergent factors in out-of-school adolescents, with a focus on gender differences. This study was a secondary data analysis study using out-of-school adolescents research data at Busan women and family development institute. The study was conducted in a total of 499 out-of-school adolescents (337 males, 162 females). The type of the 8 problem behaviors (run away from home, drop out, prostitution, violence, internet game addiction, theft, drug addiction, and smoking) were identified. The collected data were analyzed with multiple logistic regression. Among the problem behaviors of the participants, internet game addiction and theft were more significantly high in male out-of-school adolescents than female out-of-school adolescents. In internet game addiction, male out-of-school adolescents were 1.90 times higher than female out-of-school adolescents (p=.008, 95% CI=1.18-3.06). In theft, male out-of-school adolescents were 1.92 times higher than female out-of-school adolescents (p=.006, 95% CI=1.21-3.03). When the social measures were provided for those adolescents, a distinguished approach is required depending on the problem behavior and gender.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between parental psychological control and adolescent school adjustment mediated by hope of adolescents. Four hundred three middle and high school students participated in this study. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, Pearson's correlations, structural equation modeling(SEM), and multi group analysis. The average level of school adjustment was significantly higher in male adolescent group compared to female adolescent group. Adolescents' hope partially mediated the relationship between parental psychological control and adolescents' school adjustment. The proposed model was not significantly different as a function of gender. These results suggest that adolescents' school adjustment could be improved by reducing levels of parental psychological control and enhancing adolescents' hope.

  • This study is aimed at investigating the effects of school violence on adolescent depression and suicide, where both the mediating effects of resilency and the gender diffences are considered. The data, collected from 664 high and middle school students, were examined by the statistics software SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 17.0, in which descriptive statistics, factor analysis, structural equation model analysis, and multi-group simultaneous analysis are utilized. As a result, it is shown from the structural equation modeling that school violence have positive effects on depression and suicide, but negative effects on family and academic resiliency. Both ego and family resiliency act as protective factors, negatively affecting the depression. In addition, the family resiliency had negative effects on suicide. The results of multi-group simultaneous analysis imply that school violence have different effects on suicide and family resiliency respectively, depending on gender differences. Female adolescents are affected more strongly than male adolescents.

  • This study investigated the effects of individual characteristics, school factors, and community factors on adolescent school violence behaviors. Data from a total of 1,777 middle school students from 50 schools in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions were used for analysis. A hierarchical generalized linear modeling was employed to conduct a two-level analysis. Results showed that adolescents' individual factors, including attitudes toward violence, parental attachment, child abuse experiences, and affiliation with delinquent peers, as well as school factors including teacher's abusive classroom discipline, affected adolescent school violence behaviors. In addition, neighborhood disorder was found to be significantly positively correlated with adolescents' school violence. The results of this study suggest that for an understanding of school violence and to prepare countermeasures accordingly, integrated consideration of various environmental contexts in adolescents' daily lives, such as family, school, and community environments, is necessary. A multidimensional, integrated intervention plan to effectively resolve school violence based on these research results is discussed.

Based on grounded theory in qualitative studies, the study was to analyze various categories and dimensions in school adaptation process among the elementary students. Individual, family, and school related factors were involved in the school adaptation process, positively or negatively. Probing and speculating multi-dimensional aspects of the adapting process, the study paid attention to the followings. First, to extent to which the experiences of school adjustment among the multicultural youths were differentiated from those of other students. Second, how the youths responded to society and other people, directly or indirectly, and modified their actions and attitudes. Third, how we can help the youths out of school maladjustment and toward social integration. In conclusion, policy suggestions are given to assist the struggles of the disadvantaged youth, who are under acculturative stress and adapting problems at the new country.
