  • The nature of school mathematics has not been asked from the epistemological perspective. In this paper, I compare two dominant perspectives of school mathematics: ethnomathematics and didactical transposition theory. Then, I show that there exist some examples from Old Babylonian (OB) mathematics, which is considered as the oldest school mathematics by the recent contextualized anthropological research, cannot be explained by above two perspectives. From this, I argue that the nature of school mathematics needs to be understand from new perspective and its meaning needs to be extended to include students' and teachers' products emergent from the process of teaching and learning. From my investigation about OB school mathematics, I assume that there exist an intrinsic function of school mathematics: Linking scholarly Mathematics(M) and everyday mathematics(m). Based on my assumption, I suggest the chain of ESMPR(Educational Setting for Mathematics Practice and Readiness) and ESMCE(Educational Setting For Mathematical Creativity and Errors) as a mechanism of the function of school mathematics.

  • As a design research, this study aims to identify students' collaborative problems solving patterns using the Wiki and design factors triggering MKB(mathematical knowledge building) in virtual environment. For 70 days, 14 Korean secondary gifted students, who enrolled in calculus II courses in one of gifted institutions in Korea, solved 10 math problems together using the Wiki. In this study, I considered five design factors; motivation, practice of LaTeX, norms of participation, epistemic agency, and two types of educational settings. The primary pattern emergent in students' collaborative problem solving process is identified as 'solutions and refutations' along the double helix consisting of the constructive line and the critical line, which is very similar to the pattern of 'Conjectures and Refutations'(Lakatos, 1976). Despite that most participants had difficulty in using LaTeX for mathematical expressions, this study shows that Wikis are valuable tools for providing Korean secondary students opportunities to learn social virtue such as humility and courage (Lampert, 1990), which is considered to be have been neglected in Korean educational environment but is emphasized as precious for doing mathematics in the field of mathematics education.

  • Lakatos's mathematical philosophy implies that the mathematical knowledge is quasi-empirical and provides the context where mathematics grows and develops. So, it is educationally significant. But, it is not easy to apply Lakatos's methodology to teaching elementary mathematics, because Lakatos's logic of the mathematical discovery is based on the proofs and refutations but elementary mathematics does not contain any proof. This study is to develop the schemes that apply Lakatos's methodology to teaching elementary mathematics and to provide the teaching examples. I devised the teaching process and the curriculum development method. And I developed the teaching examples.

  • In this study, we conducted classroom activities that are exploring and explaining visualized materials for problem solving of school mathematics with pre-service teachers in 2007~2009. After finishing these classroom activities, pre-service teachers recorded an afternote that includes changes of their thinking about mathematics and mathematics education through these activities in this study. We collected various opinions of pre-service mathematics teachers. From the analysis these data, we searched educational effects of our classroom activities. Through conducting the practice like these classroom activities of our study, pre-service mathematics teachers will have an opportunity of a practical training that supports the teaching of mathematical problem-solving. Moreover their PCK will be enhanced. Also, They will learn a good way to realize the aim of school mathematics curriculum.

  • Recently, the Korean government develops a variety of policies for the improvement of school education. Among the policies, convergence education is considered as essential. Moreover, as the policies declare that mathematics is expected to play a central role in the convergence education, mathematics educators are required to seek for ways of how to approach convergence education in mathematics. In this context, this paper reviewed diverse viewpoints on what kind of contribution convergence education make to the improvement of school mathematics. While the argument constructed around the issue of national competitiveness is the most prevalent in the political discourse, this paper recommends to introduce the epistemological norms raised by the knowledge integration through history. In addition, this paper presents both domestic and international programs to discuss how to develop educational program for convergence education in mathematics.

  • Having mathematics for everyone in terms of students' mathematics achievement and attitudes toward mathematics is challenging in high school in South Korea. To gain such purpose, teachers are supposed to have a considerable amount of knowledge and develop mathematical and pedagogical reasoning and insight because equity can be fulfilled in mathematics classroom when any student share their ideas and have mathematical discussions. As a part of a large project aimed to develop and enact professional development for equity and examine its effects and, finally, to propose the direction of professional development to help students cognitively and affectively balanced grow in mathematics, the current study briefly introduces how such professional development was designed and implemented. This study reports its effect based on the statistical analysis of students' responses for the three different surveys, which are parts of the National Assessment of Educational Achievement study, TIMSS Advanced, and the survey about classroom interaction. The data collected in all students in school whose three mathematics teachers had participated in the professional development for two years. The findings consistently indicate the strong and impressive growths in students' attitudes toward mathematics, which are statistically significant. Furthermore, their attitudes toward mathematics are also related to interactions in a mathematics classroom. Based on such results, this study claims expansion of professional development for equity.

  • This study analyzes how statistical literacy is implemented along with the statistical problem-solving process as described in the Statistical Estimation Unit of the textbook by the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. The analytical framework was developed from the literature, and consists of 'context', 'variability', 'mathematical and statistical knowledge', 'using of technological instruments', 'critical attitude', and 'communication'. From the perspective of the statistical problem-solving process, the analysis revealed that many tasks equivalent to 'Analyzing Data' but lacked tasks related to 'Interpreting Results' and 'Formulating Questions'. As a result of analyzing the reflection of each element of statistical literacy, 'mathematical and statistical knowledge' was the most common task, but 'critical attitude' and 'using of technological instruments' were rarely dealt with. Based on the results of this textbook analysis, it was intended to provide implications for improving the curriculum and the development of textbooks for the growth of statistical literacy.
