Urban-Rural Exchange through Rural-studying Programs in Japan and its Possibility of Application in Korea (일본의 산촌유학을 통한 도농교류의 실태 및 국내적용 가능성 모색)

  • In recent time, rural-studying programs have emerged as an alternative to promoting exchange between urban and rural areas. The purpose of this research will be to take a look at such exchange activities through the study of cases involving rural areas using its human and material resources. The research will also consider the implications resulting from the possibility of its application in Korea. According to a Japan's rural-studying program, there was a whole family participation and there was cooperation between the school, village and the local government. There are some domestic places that applied this program, but only a few are successfully being implemented. To increase the possibility of successful application, building network systems between rural-studying schools will be vital. So will be the building of critical infrastructure to induce the return to farming and the establishment of assistance institutions. Also, visible assistance towards farms in rural area and conversion of recognition upon exchange activities between urban and rural will be necessary. Legislation of rural-studying program, establishment of local government assistance ordinance and continual education to local inhabitants will be central to the role of central and local government.

An Analysis of a Teacher's Transformation Knowledge in Elementary Mathematics Teaching (초등 수학 수업에서 발현되는 교사의 변환 지식 분석)

  • Teacher knowledge needed for teaching is bound to be revealed in teaching the subject matter in relation to the given instructional context. Given this, recent studies on mathematics teacher knowledge tend to analyze actual Mathematical Knowledge in Teaching [MKiT]. This study focused on the dimension of transformation and its related codes in Knowledge Quartet, which has been recognized as a MKiT framework, and analyzed a Korean teacher's transformation knowledge revealed in her elementary mathematics teaching. The analysis showed that the codes related to the dimension of transformation were useful in analyzing teacher knowledge in the Korean context. However, a few codes need to be revised or added for more suitability. On the basis of these results, this paper closes with implications for analyzing teacher knowledge in mathematics teaching.

An Introduction of Urbani School Health Kit Developed by World Health Organization (세계보건기구의 Urbani School Health Kit 소개)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to introduce of the Urbani School Health Kit (USHK) and to investigate the adaptability to Korean situation. Methods: The authors analyzed the contents of USHK developed by the health promotion team at the Western Pacific Regional Office of World Health Organization (WHO WPRO) in collaboration with health promotion experts at University of the Philippine Open University, and by observing health classes using the USHK in Angono elementary school in Manila, Philippines. Results: The following are the characteristics of USHK: 1) The USHK was composed of a teacher's guide and six books targeted to two groups of children: ages 5~6 years and 10~12, and an integrated package containing materials that can be used to support health education and health promotion activities in elementary schools. 2) The USHK could be integrated in the curriculum to reduce the burden of teacher's class preparation time and help teachers conveying clear and accurate health messages in their classes. 3) Several evaluation tools such as pre-test post-test quizzes, self-evaluation tools, observer checklists, and evaluation interview protocols were developed to monitor and evaluate whether USHK was useful, helpful, and appropriate. Conclusions: We found that USHK was a practical tool for supporting health promotion in elementary schools and could be applicable to health promoting schools in Korea if it were modified to address Korean school health problems.

The Effects on Improving Creativity with a PBL-based Robot Education Program - Case of a Science High School - (문제중심학습(PBL)에 기초한 로봇교육 프로그램이 창의력 향상에 미치는 효과 - 과학고등학교사례 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a systematic and effective PBL-based robot education program for improving creativity, and to analyze its effect on improving creativity of students in a science high school. The programs for 22 classes, designed to be used in a science high school, were developed and implemented. 8 teams got the abilities to independently build their own robots throughout all the process. The resultant improvement in creativity was analyzed in terms of gender and academic achievements. In the TTCT test, there was a significant improvement in creativity, especially the greatest in a subcategory 'originality.' While there was no significant difference in creativity by gender, there was a little difference in creativity by academic achievement. Especially the lowest group (Ha) showed the greatest improvement in creativity. This robot education program is expected to be used as an introductory one for the college of engineering.

  • The Common Core States Standards was developed by building on the best state standards in the U.S.; examining the expectations of other highperforming countries around world; and carefully studying the research and literature available on what students need to know. The Common Core States Standards for Mathematics are reshaping the teaching and learning of mathematics in California classroom using the California Common Core States Standards for Mathematics(CA CCSSM). The aim of this study is to observe CA CCSSM. The CA CCSSM were established to address the problem of having a curriculum that is 'a mile wide and an inch deep'. And it have two types of standards. One is standards for mathematical practice which are the same at each grade level, the other is standards for mathematical content which are different at each grade level. This study focused on standards for mathematical content, in particular, on Geometry domain in elementary level, using Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools.

Teaching method of the ellipse in Transformation Geometry (변환 기하학적 관점에서 본 타원의 지도 방안)

  • All the method used in teaching the ellipse was to have students draw the points which have the same sum of distances from the two points so that they can confirm the shapes of the ellipse before showing them the definition of ellipse. In this process, students would not get an opportunity to think or make the definition of ellipse for themselves. This deductive way can hinder students from having clear understanding of why such definition was made. This paper introduces a method of defining the ellipse based on the similarity between a circle and an ellipse, leading into the equation. This method is possible by introducing Analytic Geometry taught in current school mathematics and Transformation Geometry. By doing so, this paper will discuss a fundamental understanding about the ellipse and the feature of the ellipse expandable by intuition. Furthermore this paper will also show various advantages which can be given by defining the ellipse in Transformation Geometry.

The Metaphorical Model of Archimedes' Idea on the Sum of Geometrical Series (무한 등비급수의 합에 대한 Archimedes의 아이디어의 은유적 모델과 그 교육적 활용)

  • This study aims to identify Archimedes' idea used while proving proposition 23 in 'Quadrature of the Parabola' and to provide an alternative way for finding the sum of geometric series without applying the concept of limit by extending the idea though metaphor. This metaphorical model is characterized as static and thus can be complimentary to the dynamic aspect of limit concept adopted in Korean high school mathematics textbooks. In addition, middle school students can understand $0.999{\cdots}=1$ with this model in a structural way differently from the operative one suggested in Korean middle school mathematics textbooks. In this respect, I argue that the metaphorical model can be an useful educational tool for Korean secondary students to overcome epistemological obstacles inherent in the concepts of infinity and limit by making it possible to transfer from geometrical context to algebraic context.

Concept Mapping Based on Chapter "III. Universe" of High School Earth Science Textbook (고등학교 지구과학 교과서 "III. 우주" 단원의 개념도 작성)

  • The concept map is the diagram of two dimensions which hierachically arrays main concepts from those of the textbook and shows their relations. The research analyzed five of the ten high school earthscience textbooks approved by the Minister of Education according to the 6th reformed curriculum in 1995, one of which this research chose to make out the concept maps. The chapter [III. the Universe] contains the outer space of the earth presents new concepts about the stars and the universe and introduces the latest research in astronomy. This study changed textbook contents into Novak's concept map, searched for concepts requiring complement for learners in oder to obtain concepts from those of the textbook and pointed out problems on the basis of that result still better concept map is set up. We have the following conclusions. First, it is necessary to rule out unnecessary small units so as to make more effective understanding and to rearrange the units to have relation to contents. Second, the higher concept and lower concept need to be rearranged systematically in making an array of textbook contents. Third, the concept should have something to do with learners' experences and consciousness by showing learners the real examples relevant to the concept for the link between them.

  • CS Unplugged education at the base of computer science is emphasized as an instrument for teaching the basic principles of elementary SW education, but these materials for elementary education are very lacking. So We'll present the data error detection and correction materials for elementary school classes. Based on previous studies related to this topic, we developed learning materials for elementary higher grade students using Hamming code. We introduces the card magic in the introduction part. 'error detection and correction' learning materials based on the principle of Hamming code, were composed as activity-based education. The results of the questionnaire survey showed that it had a positive effect on improving learners' understanding of computer science.

High School Students' Perception and Attitudes toward Nanotechnology (고등학생의 나노기술에 대한 인식과 태도)

  • In this study, high school students' perceptions and attitudes toward nanotechnology are examined through questionnaires gathered from 1704 high school students (five general high schools and two science high schools). As a result, the study shows that high school students have generally high perceptions and positive attitudes toward nanotechnology. Science high school students show more positive attitudes and correct knowledge toward nanotechnology rather than general high school students do. High school students get information on nanotechnology via various sources such as TV and internet, whereas they have rarely perceived to get information on nanotechnology in textbooks and science class. They think that newspaper and TV programs are proper methods to introduce new science technology and get information on the advanced science and technology through the internet and science teachers. High school students show positive attitudes toward the application of nanotechnology, whereas they show negative attitudes toward personal information chips and nano-taste enhancer. And they trust nanotechnology researchers and science teachers, whereas they rarely trust about government, public organizations, and internet.
